You know your parents are getting old when your mom says she is
       thinking about hiring a cleaner.
If someone had told me I would hear those words come out of my
Moms mouth I would have laughed and called them crazy.
And yet there they were. I would have fallen over if I hadn't
already been sitting down. And immediately it hit home what
those words really meant. My mom wasn't immortal after all.

Yeah, my parents got a home aide to help with cleaning this
year. It makes total sense - Mom can't do anything and Dad is
focused on taking care of her - but it is very much not
something I could imagine the people who raised me doing. (I say
that without judgement! I'm all for hiring cleaners! Cleaning
       sucks!)

Oh I'm all for hiring cleaners and have done it in the past.
Just never ever imagined she would consider it.

Oh, I hear you. But my mom is pretty thrilled that she's got
       regular help again.
Update on the organizer: My sister was against it because she
said she was going to come out and help get my mom started.
But my sister, God love her, has health issues of her own and
for the second year running is unable to make the trip.
So now I want my mom to just call this young woman NOW NOW NOW
NOW NOW. Because if/when my mom becomes incapacitated/drops
dead the problems this is going to cause me will be humongous.

After literally decades of procrastinating, for some reason my
mom has agreed to accept some standard boilerplate forms giving
me durable power of attorney should she be declared
incapacitated, and a standard healthcare proxy document. She
has promised to have somebody look them over and get back to me
on the next step, which is the part where we sign it in front of
       a notary.
I'm putting the over/under on getting her to actually go with me
and get them notarized at six months and I'm taking the over,
which really should be infinity because this is my mom we're
       talking about.
NOTE: I am already her healthcare proxy but aside from the
hospital system she normally uses I'm not sure where that is on
file, so we figured we'd do them both.

My sister signed a healthcare proxy at her hospital. When she
finally met with a lawyer he told no additional healthcare proxy
was needed. So she just executed a will and POA for assets.
       Adding: only relevant in Massachusetts.

It's not that it's necessary, it's that I have no idea where the
copy is besides on file at our usual hospital system. I figured
if we're signing stuff anyways this would be something I have on
file myself in case of emergent need.

Ack! My sister was kind enough to mail copies to all involved
and to tape it to her refrigerator.

Sorry. It took several rounds before my grandparents were
willing to accept that they needed to do something different. I
know that's probably not what you want to hear right now, but
       just saying... it can happen.
       I hope no serious damage.
