My garden

So I’ve been thinking about starting a thread on my garden.
Since I’m an adventurous eater and gardener I grow things now
that I had never even heard of when I was younger.
I hope you all find this interesting too.
I’ll start with culantro, which is not a typo.

Attached is a picture of my pot of culantro, and it has been
trying to bloom and seed for a few months now, and I just cut
off the spikes (umbrella looking things in the picture) to keep
it going.
I’m now at the point where I will harvest 90% of the leaves this
weekend and make a “culantro pesto”, out of it. Or a kind of
chimichurri (chimichurri uses oregano not cilantro/culantro, but
I like this better). After I make this I will freeze it in old
fashioned ice cube trays, wrap them individually, and keep them
in the freezer. This makes perfect portion sizes, and I will
defrost and serve with a steak, or add to chopped tomatoes for a
quick type of pico , or add to a Latin dish for flavor.
I will leave the spikes, let them go to seed, and in a couple
months start the process all over again.
Next time, will discuss Cuban oregano, another interesting herb
I grow.

I grow culantro too. I went looking for something that handles
our heat better than cilantro, and it actually delivers.

I am growing (trying to grow) an Armenian cucumber. It's
produced tons of flowers but whether I'll get a product from it
is not clear....
I've never heard of culantro.

I’ll have to look up Armenian cucumbers. Here it’s tough to
grow them, too many caterpillars.

Cuban oregano, although not related to regular oregano, is
another herb type plant I grow.
Because it is somewhat succulent, I don’t use it freshly
chopped, but it has a wonderful flavor when cooked. We
especially like it with zucchini, either in zucchini pancakes or
on roasted zucchini. I’ve used it in chili and Latin flavored
soups and stews.

Although the description of the flavor calls it spicy, it isn’t
spicy like cayenne spicy, it is strongly flavored. It is
somewhat similar to regular oregano, stronger, but I find it
less bitter.
I also like the look of the plant, after our patio is laid this
fall, I will root some cuttings and plant them around the new
patio. I’ve not yet seen mine flower though.
It does prefer shade, so this would do well as an inside herb,
in a window. I grow it beside one of my basils, so it mostly
gets treated like basil, just a little bit dryer.
I’ve never seen a plant where the cuttings root so easily. If
anyone would like to try a cutting, message me, and I’ll mail a
couple to you.

Thanks for teaching me about culantro! I am always looking for
shady plants that may be deer resistant, and this may fit the
bill, since deer don’t like many odors we love. Plus it is
lovely to look at!

Today’s pictures are of milkweed.
I started some milkweed seeds, because everything I read about
it stated they needed a cold period before they germinated.
Which didn’t make sense to me as tropical milkweeds - well how
do they ever germinate?
So I started seeds from a milkweed not native to Florida. As
you can see in the first two pictures the monarchs are chomping
away. Which is fine, I wasn’t going to grow them on anyways.
There are a few milkweeds native to my area, I managed to find
one, A. perennis. The picture of the white flowers is this
plant. I also started seeds of this one, but covered them with
screening to protect them until they get a bit bigger.

I agree that gardening is interesting stuff. But I'll also
point out that it's not exactly "In the News". :)
A short thread started to discuss gardening in the Projects
section a while back, I'd be happy to see more things showing up
there.

It's not politics, but the super-thread is subtitled, "Whatever
ain't politics but may be interesting!"
And gardening is very interesting indeed.

Hi Tryp-OR.
I put this thread under interesting, because my plan was to only
discuss the plants in my yard I find interesting, along with
birds and other creatures in my yard that I think are
interesting.
But to me it really doesn’t matter. If you would prefer the
thread to be in a different section, feel free to ask a mod to
move it.
