Interestingly, I ran into the reading coordinator yesterday:
Kid did the same shut down thing with her during their last
session.
When Kid whined she didnt feel like reading, Coordinator said,
Okay, then I'll just have to take you back to your regular
classroom now.
That snapped Kid right out of her mood and she got to work and
did well.
So I'll have to remember that one for next time.

Usually just saying that will work, but I took a student back to
his class once when it didn't. He didn't want to read, write or
listen, which is pretty much everything we do. He did much
better the next few sessions. Generally, the students I've
tutored really like the one-on-one time with an adult and don't
want to go back to the classroom early.

That's what Coordinator says too.
The program only runs til late May, so I hope I can get some
quality time with Kid before then. She;ll be in 2nd grade next
yr and I want her to get as much extra help/attention now while
its available...
