I always thought Piper would make a great frisbee dog. However,
the frisbees we had we all chewed out of round.

It just happened yesterday (Saturday, if you're on the other
side of the country looking at the time stamps) due to the
trainer's children getting COVID, but it happened! And it was
great!
We have an extremely food motivated dog, which helps a lot.
She's been thrilled for the past 36-ish hours, because she has
gotten more salmon bites than she ever has in her life as we go
back to basics. There's a lot of stuff she had been picking up
on, but she's now doing it faster and more consistently. We paid
special attention to "stay" and "come".
Trainer also said don't be afraid to puppy-Prozac her while
we're in the moving trenches, until she's set up at the new
place. She's very high-strung and just intelligent enough to be
a little too sensitive to changes in her environment.

I never in a million years thought I would say this, but we are
finding the e-collar an excellent training tool for off lead
work. We especially like the "vibe" and "tone" options.
It's definitely not a beginner tool though.

Aw, I love this. When can she begin group classes? I'm a huge
fan of group classes. Built in distractions and also a
controlled environment. Add in the bonding time and the pro
instruction and it's a giant win for both dog and handler.

We're taking a basic obedience class just for fun and to get us
out of the house on winter evenings.
So it turns out that one of the things we're doing a ton of is
focus work. I've done this before quite a bit but what this
lady add is more distractions: she has everybody standing in
front of their puppy handing out treats like a human pez
dispenser while she walks around the room calling out the
various dogs' names, squeaking squeaky toys, tossing tennis
balls, etc.
It is a surprisingly fun and rewarding exercise and I recommend
it.

Last night we worked on the thing where the dog knows to never
ever ever ever cross the threshold to outside without an express
invitation. It's a good habit to be in and one I break
constantly and I need to get back to it.
Also I was reminded that nearly every training problem I have is
because of my failings as a dog communicator. Heh.
Also it was fun to see how differently the different breeds
react to different training tools. Dogs are cool.

Interestingly enough, Betty Jolene always waits for me to tell
her it’s ok to walk out the door. I did not do any formal
training to achieve this.
On the other hand, she still will not sit and she still goes to
the back door when she wants a treat/snack.
She is the most adorable dog on the planet (at least to me she
is) but she doesn’t make connections very well.
Another thing. If she needs me RIGHT NOW! She does a little
dance and gives me a low woof. The look on her face when I woof
back is priceless.
She is still sticking her nose up at certain treats ( a la
Stella0.
What a trip!
We are off to Hatteras next month and I cannot wait to get her
on the beach again.

Ziva won’t get out of the car or leave the yard until I attach
her leash. On the few occasions I’ve forgotten it, she gives me
a weird look. I think she’s saying that she’d get me memory
tested if she was human.

Awww, Ziva. I love this so much.
Cyrus is kinda the opposite. I'm pretty sure the thought bubble
"see ya, sucker!" pops up the moment I take his leash off in the
soccer field. It's a good thing I carry toys and refreshments
and the gate is shut.
We've been doing door training since Cy was three months old, so
eighteen months now. He knows he has to sit and wait for me to
release him every time we go out. But about once a week, he
tries to stroll right out the door. Like oh, we're still doing
this? And if he hears the elevator, a neighbor or another dog,
or if there's a package at the door, then apparently the rules
don't apply at all. I don't even bother opening the door the
whole way when external stimuli are involved. He eventually
figures it out, but we probably miss the elevator in the
meantime.

Last night LCP and the other dogs graduated from "middle
school." It was fun. We played some games like musical hula
hoops and Simon says, and we traded dogs/handlers.
Then she played "pomp and circumstance" while she handed out the
"diplomas." I laughed.
