Private. Most of the groups around us want some form of private
training done before they'll admit your dog. Too many COVID
semi-ferals who aren't being properly trained at home - it's a
liability now.

Shout out to classes in general: I love them. I love them for
the trainer, I love them for the dog. Great controlled
socialization opportunity, great way to work in a distracting
environment in a controlled way. Great bonding opportunity for
dog and handler. And even after decades of doing this I pretty
much always learn something new.
I was chatting with the trainer last night and she told me that
the challenge with LCP is that she is so smart and so driven and
so eager to please that when she is confused (not her fault, as
we're teaching something new and she has no freaking idea what)
she offers so many behaviours so fast that it's very difficult
to reinforce the correct one with the correct timing.
Yay?

Oh, and here is a tip from my trainer: sometimes it's good to
wait five seconds or so and see if your dog can figure out what
you want. I tend to jump right in with the lure or another
prompt, and evidently that isn't always the best way.
That said, sometimes I wonder if LCP thinks the actual cue is
"Ahem.":
ME: LCP, sit.
LCP: (adorably awaiting cheese)
ME, AFTER A PAUSE: Ahem.
LCP: (sits)

How did the intake with the trainer go?
We're making progress with "go get Duckie." If I say it
completely out of the blue I get Duckie eventually, although
usually I get whichever toy is closest first. Once she
understands the game I can take four toys to the other end of
the house, put Duckie at the bottom of the pile, and she will
pick out the correct toy and bring it. Woohoo!
The trainer said not to start with a different toy until she is
100% rock solid with the first one. She said that the second
one might be faster (days instead of weeks) and that at some
point LCP will cop to the game and start learning the names of
items much faster. I'm a bit skeptical.
But God, is there anything cuter than a dog that's SO PROUD they
got it right?

Ziva gets a certain thing (Greenie toothbrush thingie) only
after she sits and gives paw. I don't even have to ask anymore,
but even when I asked, here's what happened:
ME: ("sit" hand cue)
ZIVA: (stands looking sadly at me for 3-7 seconds) sits
ME: (holds out hand to get paw)
ZIVA: (waves paw somewhere near hand without ever touching it)
ME: (keeps holding out hand)
ZIVA: (looks at hand; looks at treat; looks at hand again)
finally gives paw
ME: gives treat
I think maybe the pause is a Lab thing.

Also no, no it is not. It might be just a lab/slobberdog thing,
but I somehow doubt this.
ME: Slobberdog, down
SLOBBERDOG: (feigns ignorance)
ME: (waits)
SLOBBERDOG: (goes about 3/4 of the way to the floor, hovers with
elbows about an inch off the tile, looks hopeful)
ME: Ahem.
SLOBBERDOG: (sighs deeply, completes the down)

Two different dogs and “ahem” works? I think that is the common
denominator. I think it be hysterical if LCP’s commands were
like ahem. A sigh, an eye roll, etc.
