One of our nicknames for our Sadie is EBC - enthusiastic bone
chewer. Now Sadie is just under 40 lbs, so not a large dog. But
toys are a problem. Toy listed as for strong chewers?. She
destroys it in under an hour. Toys listed as indestructible, she
ignores them. Even the flavored ones. It’s like if she can’t
destroy a toy, she doesn’t wZnt it.
Stuffed toys, hah! The first time we gave her one of these, in 5
minutes her muzzle was covered with fluff and the toy was dead.
I don’t care about the mess, the Problem is she swallows the
fluff.
So pretty much these days, she only has plastic balls (what she
can do to destroy a tennis ball is amazing) elk antlers and cow
bones (uncooked sandblasted ones).
Now it is funny to watch her throw a ball herself then chase it.

I had a chihuahua who would do that. Throw a ball and chase it.
LCP is, right this minute, sequestered in her crate until I can
get home to wfh this PM. She has a great big knucklebone and an
elk antler piece. Poor baby, she doesn't spend much time in the
crate usually so she's probably not thrilled.

I think we got bigger ones for the Slobberdogs.
I do not know why they don't instantly de-stuff these, but none
of our dogs ever have. My last Slobberdog definitely treated
this like her baby doll. She just loved to cuddle it and nibble
on it but it took her maybe six months to destroy it instead of
fifteen minutes.

We're starting a tricks class at the end of March and it
reminded me to ask: what is your favorite brand of training
treats?
We use a mix of: kibble, bits of carrot, bits of apple, bits of
cheese, bits of something I call "stinky fish treats" by Plato,
pieces of Stella and Chewy's chicken meal mixers, and bits of
leftover chicken or venison. Sometimes bits of cooked hot dog.
For me the ideal training treat is not too smelly, small enough
to disappear in a single bite and shelf stable.
LCP's favorite, by a thousand miles, is cheese. If you have a
piece of cheese she immediately begins offering every behaviour
she can think of to get you to reward her.

Trick training class update:
LCP was, as predicted, beside herself with excitement to be in a
room with six or seven other dogs. So much so that she, no lie,
nearly choked herself straining to get at them. I did not pull
on her, just stood there while she did it to herself. After a
little while I was able to distract her with treats and various
jobs to do.
The class had several doodle dogs, one poodle, a lab mix and one
absolutely adorable smallish fluffball. The poodle was far and
away the best trained dog in the class and regarded LCP with
what can only be described as polite disdain.
We began with some fairly standard stuff: army crawl, spin,
"high five", "touch" (target), "get in"/"go through" using hula
hoops.
During the class while I was chatting with one of the
instructors I mentioned that "bang, you're dead" is super fun
but not very politically correct nowadays, and we sequed into a
trick that's really just "sit pretty" but instead the cue is
"put 'em up!" Youngest said that we can't say that, we have to
go full Toy Story and drawl out "Reach for the skyyyyyy", and I
fully agree.
LCP was easily the most distracted dog in the class, which I
fully expected. What I did not expect is how quickly she was
willing to stop paying attention to the other dogs and focus on
my bag of treats. A lot of the tricks are ones she already
knows how to do so we worked on fading the stimulus.
I'm hoping that by the end of class I can direct her into or
onto something from across the room. And also have "reach for
the skyyyy" quickly followed by "BANG!" ready by the time my
little nieblings visit this summer.

Anything beyond getting out of the house and working on
socialization is a delightful bonus. So we're already at full
win.

Last Thursday I confirmed that any failure to execute the
desired cues is coming from inadequacies of the trainer, not of
the subject. Sigh. In the good news department, we have
successfully trained "show me your tummy", which we are going to
shape into a full roll-over as well as "play dead".
Also, while LCP is fully capable of leaping the coffee table
without touching it, she has not yet grokked that if she
literally jumps through a hoop this is supposed to include her
back limbs as well as the ones in front.

Tricks class update: LCP is super excited to do anything
requiring motion: "roll over", "run through this tunnel", etc.
She is much harder to train for anything requiring that she be
still while she does it. Last night we began training "hold",
wherein you give her something and she holds it until you tell
her to let it go. You begin with "take it" and she quickly
grokked that I wanted her to put her mouth on it, but she was
supremely uninterested in holding it in her mouth for more than
a femtosecond.
Supposedly this is normal but I'm not wildly optimistic.
She was one of only two dogs in the class that wanted anything
to do with the tunnel. I rolled a squeaky ball through and she
followed it like a shot.
Does anyone have any tips on training a simple "stand"? If she
stops moving, she lies down.

If you hold it above her she sits. You can lure her up off her
butt for about a fiftieth of an instant if you lead away from
her with the treat, but this only works a small percentage of
the time.
