training questions

I hope we can use this as a catch-all for training resources and
tips. I expect it will mostly be about dogs, but if anyone has
any tips on how to get a cat to not do something he wants to do
I'd be interested to read them. So far I have had exactly zero
success with Kitten, and if there was a way to measure success
with negative numbers I'd probably have to use it.
Anyway. LCP is 23 weeks old, still very mouthy, and delights in
asking the cat to play, a request the cat declines 100% of the
time. Today is the first day she'll have to spend about six
daytime hours in the crate, which is making me sad. I took her
on a vigorous hike at 6AM (this may explain my current foul
mood) and left her with a big fat knuckle bone to chew on, but I
am still kind of stressed out about it.
What are your favorite puppy training strategies? I have to
confess that I'm not putting as much effort into this puppy as
the last one because, much busier job. Thank heavens Oldest is
doing the hard parts.
We did puppy K and next I think we're going to try out a local
upland game bird dog trainer. This will be very new territory
for us.

I mean obvious things to me were rewarding good behavior way
more than punishing bad behavior, especially if said bad
behavior was more than 10 seconds ago.
Had a trainer for like 4 sessions when chance was a puppy, and
he said she was really easy, eager to please and quick to learn,
which makes me worry about a new puppy as the universe craves
balance.
The mouthy thing usually abates with the teething, no?

The mouthy thing is getting marginally better with time and
training and "maturity". Labs are a very mouthy breed, I'm told
this is common in retrievers. She has a very strong need to
hold something in her mouth nearly all the time. I'm fine with
this when that something is not one of my bodyparts or shoes.
Itellyouwhat though, the retrieving drive is a wonderful thing.
At present it wanes precipitously in the presence of any and all
distractions, but I'm hoping that will get better with time and
practice.

Does anybody have a favorite puzzle toy? We have a kong wobbler
but we're ready for something more challenging.

The mouthy thing: Piper could go through some tennis balls. If
you don't have a case, go ahead and invest.
As for the cat training, you said you didn't have luck with a
spray bottle. Have you tried putting a little vinegar in it? it
should be set on jet, not spray for maximum effect.

Kitten knows the range of the spray bottle. He jumps on stuff
with the aim of getting us to engage. When we reach for the
bottle he scoots out of range.

He wants you to play with him.
When we first got Gatsby, he was a terror sometimes, until I
realized he was just needing activity - a LOT of activity. Maybe
that's your little guy. He's much less of a terror now, Until he
was about 2 1/2 or so he wanted a lot of playtime.

Supersoakers are your friend there.
Scam Likely very quickly figured out the range of one squirt
bottle, but then we switched to one that had better range. Now
we just have to reach for it and she's off of whatever it was
she wasn't supposed to be on.
I never tried it, but some people swear by shaking a can full of
pebbles.

A trainer recommended this one for Cyrus, and I love it. It
keeps him occupied and he doesn't growl as much at this puzzle
compared to the other ones. There are three inserts available
so you can make it more challenging. Cy will probably stay at
one insert for a while.

His absolute favorite toy, though, is this one. I love that it
tires him out, doesn't require much effort from me and even
works in my smallish kitchen (130 square feet). I use it every
day with him. Of course, as a whippet/sighthound, he has a high
prey/chase drive, so that's probably why he loves it so much.

Kitten is not a baby apex predator for nothing!
