What do you think about the term 'Karen'?
By: nsw11 Date: August 24, 2021, 6:40 pm

This grew out of a message exchange I had with Ani that she
encouraged me to bring here. I find the term Karen racist and
sexist. It's a derogatory term used to refer to white women,
using implying that they feel or act entitled. I don't think
it's any different than using 'Jose' to refer to any generic
Latino male. When I've heard it, it was often used to imply the
person or persons were undocumented. How do others feel about
the term.?

I think it's like a lot of terms people use to stereotype a
group in order to dismiss them.
Cococo on the Hax board found it offensive, and repeatedly said
so, and I don't think it's necessary or helpful so I haven't
used it, but admit there were a few funny memes for a minute.
I think as with most things, context of how it's used matters.

I find it extremely offensive. To me, it's just another
offensive word that applies only to females. There is a very
long list of that type of word.

I don't understand your comparison. Calling any and all Latino
men "Jose" is pretty blatantly racist to me, so extending that
metaphor means "Karen" is blatantly sexist.
Anyway, it bugs me and it's always bugged me and I won't be
swayed into it not bugging me, and I think discussions around it
being "racist" (no) or sexist (yeah probably) are beside the
point. It's annoying and played out.

I don't use it. I don't see much good that comes from it. As a
mod, if I saw it, I would delete it immediately if it was aimed
at another commenter.

I find the term Karen sexist and racist. It seems also to have
expanded in usage from the initial "entitled white woman acting
in a racist way, usually criminally, in public" to "any white
woman I want to trash even if she's not doing anything
obnoxious" or "white women in general." It also seems to have a
class aspect in that "Karens" are always assumed to be bourgeois
and highly privileged. It's also used by people who have no idea
of all the implications and think it's just another term for a
white women; my husband asked me if I was a Karen so it's pretty
clear he had no idea of the implications and had just seen it
being used casually. I had to explain it to him. Finally, I find
name-calling lazy speech and I'd much rather have people outed
for bad behavior and attitudes (superior, entitled, privileged,
narrow-minded, provincial, naive, cruel, tactless, fearful,
angry, prejudiced or x) rather than their race, sex or class.

I find it: (1) offensive to women named Karen as a short-hand
for bad behavior, and (2) a message to (some) women that you can
never complain about anything, ever, without being labeled a
bitch.
This is not to suggest that there aren’t people of all genders
behaving badly.

This came up because on yesterday's thread I said that my
neighborhood was "full of Karens" and then that I was arguing
with a Karen (who actually was a guy, I do use the term for both
genders) because I didn't know how to stop myself over the mask
mandate for teachers here.
NSW pm'd me about it, and I said I wanted to take a deeper look
and dig into it some more, and suggested bring it up for the
community at large to get some viewpoints on it.
Part of my piece is that I do think it encapsulates a sense of
behavior (which is extremely prevalent in my neighborhood, well,
at least the FB group for my neighborhood), and was looking for
an alternative that would give the same sense of, yes, extremely
entitled behavior. The only thing that I can think of is
Nimbyism.
I would be entirely fine to use Nimbyism (or other alternatives
that might be suggested) instead, but really wanted a clearer
sense of whether/why/how Karen is problematic.

As an intentional slur? Nope.

"Entitled, self-righteous moron" works just fine, I've found.
