I got a little submersible water pump, a nice earthenware bowl
with high sides, and an assortment of large, pretty rocks (to
hide the water pump), and made my own tabletop fountain. The
bowl I chose holds about half a gallon of water, the water pump
is adjustable, and it makes a nice burbling noise. It also
looks pretty nice.
All the cats have liked it fine and I think I finally had to
replace the original pump after about ten years. This pump has
been going strong for a long time, and there are plenty more
where it came from. Every three or four weeks I unplug the
pump, cart the whole shebang into the kitchen, and use some
bleach to discourage the algae, but I expect I'd be doing that
no matter what the fountain was made of. I put a piece of clear
plexiglass on the table that the fountain sits on because one of
my previous cats was a sloppy drinker, and I just never took it
off. The Evil Stranger Kitty apparently thinks the fountain is
the greatest thing he's ever seen, and since he has no interest
in the normal water bowl any more, it's gone back onto the
shelf.

I tried cat fountains. They were both ceramic except for the
plastic submersible pumps. I was never convinced I could get
the pumps clean enough without destroying them in the process
(none were designed to be dismantled, cleaned, and reassembled).
A pigmented organism of some type, likely bacteria, grew
prolifically in the fountains. I know too much about biofouling
and pumps from my work to feel good about that. Even running
diluted bleach through the pump will not kill every type of
organism that could be a problem. Regular bleaching will
destroy plastic components of the pump in a short period of time
and may leach plastic degradation products into the water. The
sterilization method I trust most is UV. UV, if the water is
not pumping through the light chamber too fast, will kill most
things. The pump would not suffer unless exposed to the UV
lamp. That would be expensive and overkill when I can put out a
clean ceramic bowl of water every day instead.
