OK, but minors don't medically transition. That's not a thing.
Minors socially transition - changing their hair and clothes and
possibly using makeup - and they get put on puberty blockers.
Puberty blockers do not lead to gyn pain or other disorders.
Medical transitioning, including hormones, starts when they
reach adulthood.

The woman writing the article said she was on puberty blockers
by age 16 and testosterone by age 17. So in her case, and
presumably those cases like hers, at the Tavistok Institute in
England, it appears that minors were certainly transitioning,
not merely taking puberty blockers.

Age of majority is complicated in the UK. At 17, you're not
fully an adult, but you have a lot of the disabilities of
minority removed.

Right. Laws in the UK are different than in the US, but one
thing we share is that adulthood is legally achieved in stages.
In the US, 18-year-olds are of the age of majority, but they
still can't legally drink, for example.
In the UK, 17-year-olds are deemed capable of full informed
consent for medical treatments. Also, hormone therapy is not
given unless they've been on puberty blockers for at least 12
months - and puberty blockers don't start until after the youth
meet with an interdisciplinary team of doctors, social workers,
etc.
What happened to Ms. Bell is unfortunate, but it's also a
serious outlier. Per policy, she needed to be seen and given
psychological treatment for at least a few months before being
evaluated for puberty blockers, and then put on puberty blockers
for at least 12 months before starting testosterone treatments.
She went through that. And then she STAYED with that treatment
for at least another 3 years, going so far as to get a full
mastectomy at age 20. I highly doubt her team would have given
her that treatment if they knew she was having doubts or didn't
understand what was happening, especially after age 18.
Everyone involved overestimated her reasoning capabilities for
this. Horrific, but this has more to do with disability rights
and how to gauge the reasoning capabilities of autistic
adolescents and adults than anything to do with transgender
health as a concept.

It's a shame that she regrets transitioning, but it's not
inherently more of a tragedy than when transgender youth are
prevented from transitioning. I hope she is able to get the
support she needs to be comfortable in her body.
We tend to value cisgender people more than transgender people,
and so if a cisgender person is damaged by transitioning that's
seen as unforgiveable, but if a trans person is damaged by being
prevented from transitioning, that's ok. It's not ok.
Puberty blockers are life-saving for a lot of transgender kids.
While we can work to do a better job of screening out people who
will regret taking them, making them much much harder to get
does enormous harm.

I appreciate the viewpoints of those who have a lot more
experience in these issues than I do.
I agree with someone early on in this thread that even without
that, this particular article seemed to have an agenda that was
unfriendly.

If we’re going to listen to people who de-transitioned, then one
of the largest transgender surveys of all time actually did so.
Of 27,000 trans people they surveyed, only 8% of them (~2100)
de-transitioned & only ~10% of THOSE for non-pressured reasons.
