Yes, it would be sad if this was a decision that you came to
regret. Fortunately, most don’t have regrets, and are much
happier. For one of my son’s friends, transitioning vastly
improved her mental health. She was suicidal as a boy.

I'm sorry this particular individual regrets their decision. It
is the exception, though, not the rule. Being able to transition
has saved a lot of lives.

I really feel for the author. I've made so many mistakes in life
that were more easily undone and I think there are legitimate
concerns any time a young person makes a life altering decision,
but I also think this site is publishing it less to understand
this persons struggle and more to make a particular point.

Anecdote is not data, but it's all I have to go on.
My daughter has three friends who are trans or non binary. They
were utterly miserable before they were openly allowed to
express the gender (or none) they are. One had to switch schools
'cause he was being bullied. Not one is worse off.

I am glad to hear that worked out for your son's friend.
My friend's depressed/anxious teen, at 16, was absolutely sure
she was male and lobbied for surgery to transition. Friend
basically told her "when you're 18, but start doing the
research, etc." Yes, friend was partly stalling. By 18, teen
was absolutely sure she was not transgender. She's still
depressed/anxious, but that seems rooted in something unrelated.

I note she says she started having painful periods that
depleted her of energy. Some people have speculated anorexia
starts at puberty in women sometimes for similar reasons.
Endometrosis and PCOS and other gyn problems are so RARELY
diagnosed at puberty because of taboos and not knowing what is
       normal.
It is not impossible that if she had never transitioned she
would have had ongoing pain and gyn issues. This is why sex
education is so important for both sexes and also parents. Just
knowing WHEN to go to the doctor would save a lot of trouble.
       I do feel a little concerned about transitioning at puberty;
however most trans know very young they are trans, and with them
I would have much less concern. It's people like this who do
need to be screened out. She was already undergoing puberty and
this desire right at puberty should mean a real effort to rule
out other dysphoria issues, not just gender identity.
Is it sad? I don't know. All I know is that a coworker could
not get her tubes tied before age 25-- a very paternalistic
viewpoint and she already had a child. She was upset. Sometimes
vasectomy is delayed too. The reasoning is that young people
often change their mind and are quite unhappy to have lost their
fertility when they finally meet somebody and start feeling
maybe a family is what they want.
When do you decide not to do a procedure just because of
complaints, not because the procedure was unsuccessful or didn't
work, but because they changed their minds about it ten years
       after the fact?
I have a risk of uterine cancer in the family and I'm now on
hormones to reduce hyperplasia but I always made it clear that
decision was pending a hysterectomy, probably will not be until
past 50 because of the coverage rules unless I have an emergent
need to do it sooner. I've reviewed the options (ablation,
etc.) and all it did was make me more sure I should do it.
