booze

It's summer which means it's mojito time. But last night it was
late and it was dark and I didn't feel like going outside for
mint. I remembered having a grapefruit-basil martini which was
to die for. I had basil, but no grapefruit. Limes, but no mint.
So on a whim I made a bastardized thing with:
half a lime, squeezed then dropped into the glass
a squeeze of simple syrup
rum (could have used vodka I guess, those feel interchangeable
to me in a mixed drink)
muddled basil
ice
seltzer
I'm not sure what to call it but I quite enjoyed it.
What's your favorite summer drink? Mr Q likes what he's now
calling a Dutch mule because, Ketel one vodka.

If I'm not just having a beer, I keep coming back to a simple
Captain and Coke (zero) with a lime, well iced.

From when I drank booze, the bartender in me always wanted a
Negroni on a hot and sweaty summer day. That, or a cucumber
martini. Both made with Hendrick's gin. Third place, a Patron
Reposado Mexican martini, or my own secret margarita recipe that
I perfected (to my personal taste) over time.

Now, I stick to mocktails with fresh herbs.

Vodka tonic (with lemon, not lime: how the Brits drank it, so I
hear)
Margarita on the rocks (w/salt)
And from my looong ago shot drinking days, my friend Jose Cuervo
(w/salt & lime wedge, natch)

How do you make your margarita? I used to use the best tequila
I could afford, triple sec, lime. I can't remember the ratios.
I do remember the hangovers though, like the time I found the
milk in the cupboard and the raisin bran in the refrigerator the
day after.

I don't drink alcohol as much as I used to. My urologist told me
to avoid caffeine and alcohol products a long time ago. Since
I'm clearly addicted to coffee, there was NFW I was going to
give up coffee, so I gave up alcohol. Not entirely. When I do
drink I have a tendency to limit how much.
When I got home last night I had to have a drink though. My
usual favorite is Crown Royal and 7Up. But we're out of Crown
Royal. But we have a few flavored sample bottles. So I had
vanilla flavored CR with my 7Up.
I do like Disarono on the rocks. I also like White Russians, but
(like Crown Royal) we're out of vodka.
I still have some mango margaritas that were on sale at Costco a
few trips ago. The first bottle is still holding on. I guess we
should get on that so we can bring in bottle #2 from storage.

I'm definitely overdue for a nice red sangria too. Thanks to
Wheatless for the recipe which mostly goes:
Bota Box o' nice-enough red wine. I like something not too
crazy dry, there's one called "big red blend" that is fine
Some sugar or simple syrup
A sliced apple
A sliced orange
Whatever other fruit seems good at the moment. Cherries are
awesome for this, as are peaches and mangoes. I don't do
strawberries because they don't hold up well. Do not skimp on
the fruit.
A generous splash of brandy or cointreau or, God help me, peach
schnapps (I swear this is a good add) or a combination of some
of those things.
Let it all macerate in the fridge for at least several hours or
up to overnight. Strain out the fruit. Serve garnished with
nice fresh pretty fruit and maybe a splash of seltzer if you
need to lighten it up.
Sangria packs a sneaky punch.

My own experience with sangria is to not scrimp on the wine
quality. Same goes for cooking with wine. If you have some cheap
ass wine you don't want to drink, do not cook with it. Throw
that shit down the drain. :-)

I heartily agree. I also think that there is absolutely no way
in hell I'd adulterate a really expensive/exclusive (for me,
let's be real here) bottle of red by making it into sangria.
The bota box is my compromise. It wouldn't be my first choice
but I'd definitely drink it.
