When the cat is ready to meet the dogs without barriers

Our dogs are big, young, and goobers. They are still a bit
excitable at times. When in the house with the cats moving
freely, they are generally in their "corral". The cats can
approach (and do) but the bars give them just a little bit of
protection if the dogs get too rowdy.
Hoshi likes to rush in and rub against the kennel, trying to rub
against the girls. They will generally sniff at him and try to
lick between the bars. I figure they'd be fine together, but
prefer any loose girl/together time be a) supervised with both
of us here and b) happen when the girls are on leads just in
case.
Hoshi disagrees. And today, as I was busy folding laundry next
to the kennel, he jumped onto the table (big no) and into the
kennel itself, where the girls were in cooling down and
snoozing. I had that door open in a matter of milliseconds, and
the girls (who had been a bit surprised by the incoming cat)
immediately went into "go outside" mode. Fortunately they were
very good and let me get Hoshi out of the kennel before the mad
dash to the back door began.
But yeah, it looks like it's time for the next step in their
relationship to happen.
