Honey - my rescue kitty

I say rescue, but if I'm being honest, I stole her, right off
the street. She was "living" at a business, that had stopped
doing business at that location and said they were temporarily
operating out of the other town facility. I saw her on our break
walks. I started feeding her and making sure she had water also.
She was skinny, and had bumps under her fur. Her fur was very
thin. The best I can piece together on her past, she belonged to
a woman across the street from the business. She also had
another cat but Honey doesn't like other cats. So I would see
her just about every day, most days twice a day for a year. I
figured her "owner" had her fixed, because I never saw kittens.
One day I brought a kitty carrier with me to work and after work
I swung by her hangout, picked her up and put her in the carrier
and brought her home.
I was able to keep her inside for about 3 weeks. Then she
escaped the house and I was worried that she would run off. But
she didn't. She's been living in my yard. I have a cat flap door
to my garage and we've managed to get her accustomed to coming
in the garage. So in the winter she spends time there. When it's
nice out she finds places in the yard to hang out.
In her time with me she's gotten a little bigger, but she is
still skinny as heck. Her fur has improved a lot, it's still
filling in, after a year of regular feeding and treats :-)

Oh my goodness she is lovely!
In my somewhat limited experience outdoor cats have a lot of
trouble becoming indoor-only cats.

We are still hopeful we can get her to come inside. It's not
looking good because our cats are little assholes. Khaleesi
outright snarls at her. Gatsby is curious but he escaped one day
while she was right outside the door and chased her. I wanted to
paddle his little butt like he was a child.
She definitely likes her freedom.

What a sweetie! Good for you for looking out for her then
bringing her home. I brought mine home from a shelter when she
was about 6 months old. She was very thin and didn't have much
fur. It took about a year of feeding her for her fur to fully
fill in, and wow does she have thick fur! She is now 8 years
old and over 13 lbs (overweight in her senior years). I hope
she is as much a joy for you as mine is for me. :)

In my (again, somewhat limited) experience sometimes if you give
them enough time and space they work it out themselves. One
thing I have definitely learned and not just with cats is not to
interfere with the pecking order. I mean sure, you can manage
the level of stuff you will allow, but whichever is boss lady,
that's for them to decide.

No, you're absolutely right. It's hard not to worry about her
being outside all the time. I have actually put my cats in
another room and tried to coax her in. She didn't come in after
all, and I forgot my cats inside that room! They were pissed at
me!

I had another lapsit session with her this afternoon. She got
reaaaaal relaxed. I thought she was going to take a nap. My legs
started cramping, but I wanted to spend as much time with her as
she would allow, cramps be damned.
I've decided I'm going to give her extra wet food at night.
She's still so skinny.

Poor baby. What are you feeding? Last summer when we fostered a
cat family the mama cat was terribly thin. I put her on a super
premium food and she transformed: shiny glossy coat, gained
weight, etc.
