       National Cuban Sandwich Day
On August 23rd, celebrate a sandwich that originated in Cuba,
but grew up in Florida. National Cuban Sandwich Day is a tribute
to flavor found in a toasted pressed sandwich.
While the Cubano traditionally consists of ham, roast pork,
swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread, restaurants
and home cooks serve up different versions.
There is just sooooooo much mustard on these. Take it easy on
the mustard and I am in!
       [/quote]
I agree about the mustard and I just love these so much I don't
even care. In the before times there was a farmer's market at
work and there was a cubano truck and about once a year I'd
indulge and then it took me a full year to use up the ten
       billion calories in it.

       It is National Waffle Day
On August 24, 1869, Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York
received his patent for the waffle iron. While waffles existed
long before then, the invention made waffles more readily
       available.
Hot take--the waffle is superior to the pancake because it holds
the syrup better. Is is objectively the case.

I am all about some waffles! My dad used to make waffles for
       dinner sometimes.
One of the ways Scritchy convinced me that we really needed to
get a chest freezer was because then we could get the big
bj's/costco thing of freezer waffles and he wouldn't bitch about
how much space they were taking up. :D

I like pancakes, but I do go back and forth on the issue.

We had cornbread waffles last week, homemade. This was the
second time and served them with pot roast and gravy. Taking
waffles savory. Surprisingly really really good.

Taking waffles savory - dad would do something where he would
put bacon on the (oldstyle) waffle iron, let it crisp up a bit,
and then pour the waffle batter in. It was insanely good,
especially after you added syrup to it.
