I almost told this story on the [member=6]Queenie[/member]
thread about her pup, but after I hijacked it to become a
travelogue, I figured I might as well bring it here. (I think
I've told it before since we started this place, but I can't
find it.)
This happened before I got Ziva. Dakota and I had been together
about a year and a half and hadn't been apart overnight before.
I drove from Chicago to DC for a funeral and then drove home for
a total time away of 57 hours. She was cared for by someone who
rented a room in my house. He fed and walked her, but she spent
most of her time in my part of the house (which was, of course,
her part of the house, too) She happened to be out of the room
when I got home. She was hanging out with her caregiver. The
caregiver knew, of course, because I texted him when I came in.
When I heard her coming toward my room, I sat on the floor. She
came through the door like Kramer, sliding in sideways and
coming to a full stop. She stood and looked at me for a good
10-15 seconds. Then she walked over and spent another 10-15
seconds sniffing me. All this before the next act, which was a
full minute of crawling into my lap and licking everything she
could reach.
Today's the anniversary of that event. Here's my Facebook post
from the time.
I came home after being gone for 57 hours (funeral in DC,
God bless my cousin David and his family). I managed to make it
upstairs in relative quiet. Then all of a sudden, Dakota came
skidding into the room like Kramer on 4 legs. We had a glorious
reunion in which she leaned against me and showed me how all her
toys worked. Following that, she had to lick the time apart off
my face. Then she melted against me and let me scratch and kiss
her. Now she's sleeping on the floor at my feet. It's good to be
home.
So just to be clear on what all that meant: When she first came
into the room, she stopped and stared at me for 4 of my breaths
as if she was making sure I really existed. The toy thing lasted
about 10 minutes. (In case you've never done it, dog toys don't
really "work" unless the human plays with them, too.) The
licking seemed to last an hour but was probably about half a
minute. Thank goodness she has really nice breath. The melting
could've been a lot longer from my point of view, but I guess
that was another ten minutes, too. After 57 hours apart, she
needed that whole 20 minutes to get her smell back on
me.
This is an anniversary video. Jethro, the little black and white
dog, moved in downstairs 9 years ago yesterday. The next day, he
met my dogs for the first time. So the Basset is Maggie, who was
about 13 at the time. She and Dakota both died in 2020. That's
as much running as I ever saw Maggie do. Jethro and Ziva still
play every chance they get.
I love watching them play. When I think about the good lives
we've been able to give our animals, it makes me very happy.
They are my source of joy.

Happy tails!
They must have slept well that night. I got tired watching them.

The little guy with the shrill bark next door was Benji.
The booming bark was Maggie when they ran too much and a little
too rough for her.
Look closely at Dakota. There's a little bit of hair sticking up
just in front of her tail, just about 2 inches square. Those
were her hackles.

Dogs know stuff. Here's a story about Dakota from 13 years ago.
She was a bit less than 4 years old at the time.
About 6-8 months ago, we met a nice dog/human combination
on our regular morning walk. They have a basement apartment at
about the midpoint of the usual route, and we'd see them coming
in or out maybe 2-3 times a week. Cody, the almost 15 year old
retriever/hound/etc. combination was calm enough that he could
walk quietly with his human without need of a leash. Even little
Miss Energy didn't change that. Cody played nicely with her
without any danger of running off.
About 3 weeks ago, Dakota started to pay an unusual amount of
attention to the windows around their apartment. Sniff the
fence. Reach her nose through the fence to sniff the windows. A
few times, she even tried to go through the gate toward the
apartment door. Last Saturday, we took a walk at an odd time and
happened to see the human sitting on his steps. He told me that
he had to put Cody down. About 3 weeks ago.
Oh, boy, do they know things. I have a couple of stories like
that, too. We humans can be dumb and oblivious.
