"approaching escape velocity"
I love this so much. I have a 30 y/o that could use some escape
velocity.

I so rarely get to go out with just my friends. And today I
remembered a reason why.
I had scheduled a long-delayed beverage at a local bar with a
friend. Today she rescheduled on short notice because her teen
had something to which he needed transport. Again.
So we will go and we will have fun on another night, but I
suddenly remembered how incredibly great it is when they run
their own lives and I don't have to schedule everything around
them.
Of course now I have a puppy which is nearly as bad, so maybe
I'm just a glutton for punishment.

Absolutely agree.

I'm sorry. It can be trying. My daughter's difficult year was
6th grade. It's normally part of the whole thing, right? My
daughter is really well behaved I think mostly because she had
to tip toe around her verbally/emotionally abusive dad. I wish
she would act out a bit. ymmv

I found this article from the Times about parenting teens
interesting:

Title: "What Do Teenagers Want? Potted Plant Parents."
Your own kids are past this age, Queenie, but I thought it might
help someone with kids in their early-to-mid teens.
Excerpt:
Many parents feel that their adolescents hardly need them
anymore. Teenagers often come and go on their own schedules,
sometimes rebuff our friendly questions about their days, and
can give the impression that interacting with the family is an
imposition that comes at the cost of connecting, digitally or
otherwise, with friends.
So here’s a complaint one might not expect to hear from
teenagers: They wish their parents were around more
often.
I'm not saying this is universally applicable, mind you--just
offering it as food for thought.

That depends on the kid and the parent! There are no guarantees
or perfection about this sort of thing!!
My approach to this would be to say let's wait and see, and in
the meantime - okay, if she doesn't get in, what can/will she
do. Let's start planning for alternatives just in case, and
hopefully it won't be needed. At the least, even if not wanting
to sort through that with me, being clear that *I* don't
consider it the end of the world if it turns out that way, and
it's manageable and fine.

In "we live and we learn, especially while young" news:
On Saturday Oldest called us because he was locked out of his
car. He had not zip tied a valet key to the underside of his
front bumper, so Mr. Q drove ninety minutes to bail him out.
Also on Saturday Youngest called me to bring him his work badges
which he had left on the sofa, and then later he phoned all
upset because he couldn't find his high-vis waterproof coat
where he thought he'd left it (in his car.) I was able to help
out with the badges, but he may have to replace the jacket,
which is pricey. If he'd put his name in it as we'd suggested
he'd be more likely to get it back.
Sigh.
I didn't learn from my parents' mistakes, and I see that my
children have inherited this trait.

Youngest is going to some college formal thing with a friend and
their dates and they are doubtless going to engage in underage
drinking and then stay, um, somewhere in that state overnight.
And I am very happy they are not driving but part of me is
worried because, teenagers.
It's going to be fine.
Right?
