The Trouble In Room 101 (Marlee and Parents)
   DIR By: Marlee
       Date: December 20, 2024, 5:03 pm

I shifted uncomfortably in the chair, my uniform dress shoes
scuffing against the shiny floor of the principal’s office.
Usually I enjoyed the soft coos of the cuckoo clock that now
seemed like it was taunting me. My heart felt like it was trying
to climb out of my chest.
       Cheating. They thought I cheated.
I stared at the framed photo of Principal Montgomery shaking
hands with the mayor. His smile in the picture looked fake, but
now, in person, her expression was unreadable. She was busy
typing something on her computer, and I couldn’t tell if she was
ignoring me on purpose or just waiting for my parents to arrive.
My stomach churned and I thought of my parents, worrying about
whether or not they'll believe me.
I glanced at the clock again. Twenty minutes had passed since
       they’d called home.
Mrs. Montgomery cleared his throat. “Do you want some water,
Marlee? You’ve been sitting here for a bit.”
I shook my head quickly. I didn’t want him to think I was
       stalling. “I’m okay,” I murmured.
She nodded and leaned back in her chair. “You know, Marlee, I
don’t want you to feel like you’re in trouble—” While she was
going to give this die diligence to cover all her bases, Mrs.
Dixie Montgomery was sure this was a misunderstanding.
“But I am in trouble,” I blurted before I could stop myself. My
voice cracked, and I bit my lip, feeling my face flush.
She frowned. “Well, we’re trying to figure things out. Mrs.
Montgomery said your answers on the test were nearly identical
to the student sitting next to you. She thought that was
       unusual.”
I clenched my fists in my lap. “But I didn’t cheat!"

They'd gotten the call from school and Levi was the most
available one in that moment, so he listened to what was going
on and headed to the school. It sounded very unlike Marlee so
Levi was ready to get to the bottom of it. He found his way to
the office and then headed in when the receptionist said it was
okay. He saw his daughter, and offered her a gentle smile,
"Principal Montgomery...what's going on?" he asked

All these Mrs Montgomerys around here was a little overwhelming.
I understood well enough that they were Uncle Dan's family. I
had decided that I needed to take things slowly and that meant
only referring to Levi's family as extended family. I understood
and respected Uncle Danny's family and thought that it was nice
how they were all one big happy family. I just needed time to
       get used to it.
For now that meant using proper titles and adjusting only when
       it started to get confusing.
But it surprised me when Dadd-i (because it rhymes with Levi)
       addressed his sister-in-law like that.
Mom sat down beside me, placing a hand on my knee. “Marlee, are
you okay?” she asked softly, her Mandarin accent curling around
       the edges of her words.
       I nodded quickly. “I didn’t cheat, Mom. I promise.” Taking a
deep breath, I leaned against her, the stress clear on my
       features.
Principal Montgomery cleared her throat again, this time louder.
“Thank you both for coming in so quickly. I’ll get right to the
point. Marlee’s math teacher, Teri, to be clear, believes
there’s a possibility Marlee may have copied answers during
       today’s history test.”
“Marlee is a straight-A student,” Mom said firmly. “She doesn’t
cheat. This must be a misunderstanding.”

They were in school, so it would remain Miss. Montgomery. Levi
believed firmly in that and given that Marlee wasn't yet used to
that side of the family it made sense. It also would prevent her
feeling like she had to force the process of getting
comfortable. Levi himself didn't know the entire family well.
Levi glanced at his daughter when his wife reassured her, he
could see his daughter was in distress and her insistence she
didn't cheat did track, it wasn't something she would do. Levi
       was convinced of that.
Levi listened to Dixie when she spoke and then nodded.
"Shouldn't Teri be here?" He asked deciding that formalities
would be too confusing at this point. She was the one who had
Marlee sent here so it only made sense that she would be there
to explain it. Facing your accuser and all that. Levi was not
dismissing either Marlee or Teri but he wasn't going to take a
teachers word over his daughters even if they are family. He
wanted to know what basis Teri had for her accusation, if it was
proved true he would work it out. For Marlee to be in the
principles office Teri had to have some good reason.
