What is an LED monitor?

---------------------------------------------------------
An LED monitor is basically the new version of the LCD monitor
that you connect to your computer. LCD monitors used to be lit
primarily with CCFL backlights which contain mercury. LED
backlighting is generally thought to be better for the
environment since it contains no mercury and uses less power
than a CCFL system.
There are a few other advantages to an LED monitor. One is that
the screen gets brighter faster. A CCFL light has to heat up for
a few seconds before it reaches full brightness. This isn't a
big deal but it's nice to have.
Another advantage of an LED monitor is that the lighting
distribution is more even. Since it is lit with many small LEDs
rather than one big light source it will generally have less
dark or light spots.
You will find LED technology in fancy new LCD TVs that are on
the market today. The same technology is available in computer
monitors and there are many options available.
How to choose an LED Monitor?
There are a few factors to consider when choosing an LED
monitor. I'm assuming you want to hook it up to a computer.
First, you want to check out what kind of stand it has. More
expensive models will have stands that have adjustable height
and tilt settings and possibly even rotation. The cheaper models
will have a stand that may only tilt slightly or not at all. If
you use a computer for many hours I think it's worth it to get
an adjustable stand.
Another thing to look at is the screen size. For productivity,
it is usually a good idea to get the biggest monitor that you
can afford or that fits on your desk. The best value is usually
found for monitors in the 20 to 24 inch range but you can find
bigger and more expensive models that go all the way up to 30
inches.
The next thing to look at is screen resolution. Most LED
monitors in the 20 to 24 inch range will either have stand HD
resolution (1920x1080) but some will have a slightly higher
resolution (1920x1200). More resolution means more pixels on
your screen which means you will be able to see more of that
webpage or document you are working on.
I'd be happy with a 24 inch monitor with a 1920x1080 resolution.
1920x1200 would be even better. The reason I'd prefer a 24 inch
over a 22 or 20 inch is that my eyes aren't so great so I'd
rather everything be bigger rather than smaller.
Power Efficiency
In general, LED monitors are more power efficient than non-LED
monitors (ie. CCFL monitors). The difference is not huge though.
A standard 20 inch LCD monitor might use around 30 Watts while
an LED version with the same size and resolution might use
around 24 Watts.
This is a power savings of 20%. While it may seem small, it will
make a big difference if you use the monitor every day. It takes
the same amount of power to use the LED version for five hours
as it does to use the non-LED version for four hours. After many
hours, days and months this will start to add up to a
significant savings.
What's a good place to find more information about LED monitors?
You can check out LED monitors

to find out about new models and
other information. There are posts that point out some of the
main features of top models and also list the power usage so you
can see how efficient the monitor is.
