Keva sighed as she sat on a bench with her leg bouncing. She was
waiting as patiently as she could to speak to the person who
would be in charge of the auctions of the real estate. She'd
been there for what felt like all day, and she was growing
restless.
She looked over at Calvin as he sat next to her.
Calvin. The day is about to end.. They're not going to see
you...
Keva. Oh. Yes she will.. I guarantee it....
Keva looked over at Calvin, then watched as the receptionist
stepped away from her desk. She politely stood up with
determination on her face, and bypassed the receptionists' desk.
She proceeded to the back of the office and found the door
labeled for "Patrica Logan"
She knocked lightly on the door, and she heard a noise. She
proceeded to open it, and her eyes bucked when she saw a man and
woman on top of the desk having sex. She gasped quietly at the
sight and pulled out her phone to take pictures. "Eww." She
slowly pulled the door closed again, and she held her chest for
a moment as she walked back to the waiting area to Calvin..
Calvin. Well.. Did she see you?
Keva. Not exactly.... I saw her though..
Calvin looked over at her slightly confused, and she showed him
the pictures she had taken. He raised his eye brows and turned
his head sideways.
Calvin. That meeting definitely looks more important than
yours...
Calvin smirked at her as she sighed and rolled her eyes.
Calvin. I can't believe we're still here anyways..
Keva. I told you I'm not leaving until I'm seen..
Calvin. No.. I mean here... In Texas.
Keva. Father wanted to open a jewelry store here so that's what
we're doing...
Calvin. I guess... But you tried and it didn't work out...
Sooo...
Keva. It's not that it didn't work out.... There was just a set
back... Besides.. I have a lot of inventory wrapped up in that
store that I can't move...
Calvin. What did your father say?
Keva. He told me to find a lawyer, and he'd make some calls
too...
Calvin. I don't remember you mentioning a lawyer.. Have you
found one?
Keva shook her head.
Keva. Americans like money and if I can save time and just buy
the whole book of business, then I'll win.
Calvin. Wait.. The whole book of business? I thought you only
had interest in the jewelry store..
Keva. I do want the jewelry store.... But..
Keva looked over at him as she thought about his question.
Keva. Honestly?
Calvin looked over at her and nodded.
Keva. I feel like Marcus stood for something... He told me the
story of the Diamond District, and what he wanted to accomplish,
and it just sounded like the right thing to do... And since he's
fallen on his luck, and I have the resources to keep the dream
alive, then that's what I will do...
Calvin nodded.
Calvin. You liked him didn't you?
Keva smirked at Calvin.
Keva. I liked his spirit... Something bold and righteous... I
just hope it hasn't been broken..
Keva paused when a man walked into the building with a smile on
his face.
Man. Hey Sarah.. Is Patty here? I wanted to take her for dinner
a little early since I'll have to work later.. She's not
answering her phone though..
Receptionist. Oh Mr. Logan.. Mrs. Logan has stepped out of the
office for a moment on business, but as soon as she gets back
I'll have her call you...
Man. I just saw her car parked outside..
Receptionist. Oh.. Yeah.. She went out with Diane..
The man nodded and sighed.
Man. Make sure you tell her to call me..
Receptionist. Sure thing..
Keva and Calvin watched as the man exited the building again,
and the two of them looked at each other..
Keva. I don't think Patty is a very honest woman..
.... After another 20 minutes, Keva and Calvin turned their
attention to Patricia and the man walking down the hall toward
the door...
Patricia. Same time tomorrow?
The man nodded and the receptionist spoke to him.
Receptionist. Have a good day Mr. Calhoun....
Keva stood up and Patricia took a look at her and turned on her
heels heading back to her office.
Keva. Umm. Mrs. Logan?
Patricia continued to walk, but she called out without turning
around.
Patricia. Sarah.. What time is it?
Keva watched as Patricia turned the corner then the receptionist
spoke again.
Receptionist. It's 5:03... Mrs. Logan is gone for the day...
Keva raised her eye brow.
Keva. Like hell she is...
Keva began walking and took the same way she'd taken before.
She'd made her way back to Patricia's office and this time she
opened the door.
Patricia. Are you hard of hearing? I'm done for the day.
Keva. I have been trying to get an appointment formally for a
week, and today I've been here since 12 o'clock. You've had
lunch, you've taken bathroom breaks, and you've also had a
bloody good time with Mr. Calhoun while leaving your husband to
eat alone... I think you can spare a few more moments to talk to
me.
Sarah stood in the doorway holding her breath as Patricia spoke
again.
Patricia. Leave us.
Patricia's face drained and then her left eyebrow cocked.
Patricia. Who are you?
Keva. I'm Keva Osie.. The daughter of Zuberi Osie, and you've
acquired property that I would like to purchase.
Patricia looked at her for a moment.
Patricia. What property?
Keva. 827 Baker Boulevard.
Patricia thumbed through a few papers on her desk and smirked
looking up at her.
Patricia. Hmmm. So you're familiar with a Marcus Greer Jr.?
Keva. Of course I'm familiar with him. He owned the building..
Patricia. So you're aware of his criminal activity.....
Keva's faced dropped as she looked Patricia square in the eye.
Keva. I don't know anything about any criminal activity, and I
don't appreciate you insinuating such because that's how
lawsuits start..
They stared at each other for a moment.
Keva. Now.. What I do know is that I rented a building out, and
now I have over a few hundred thousand dollars worth of
inventory that I cannot touch because the doors are chained...
Patricia. And what do you want me to do about that?
Keva smiled.
Keva. I'm glad you asked.... I have 1.56 million dollars set
aside to purchase the deeds that were confiscated from Marcus
Greer Jr.
Patricia cocked her eye brow.
Patricia. And exactly what is your interest in the all of these
properties now?
Keva smiled politely.
Keva. This request comes on behalf of Zuberi Osei. He has ideas
for them, and I want my store..
Patricia. Zuberi Osei.... The Oil Tycoon?
Keva. The one and only..
Patricia stared at her for a moment.
Patricia. 1.56 million US dollars?
Keva. Yes.... 30% more than each of the buildings are worth
should be helpful to your organization. Especially given the
financial troubles you had last year that I hear you're still
recovering from... And we both know if these buildings go to
auction, you would barely get two thirds their worth.
Patricia. And what if I say no to your offer?
Keva and Patricia stared at each other then her desk phone rang.
They both looked at the phone, but Keva already knew who was
calling..
.... A half hour later, Keva was walking from around the corner
again with a manila envelope as she tucked her pen back in her
suit jacket. She and Calvin made eye contact and she smiled at
him. She'd accomplished exactly what she set out to do, and she
not only had ownership of the building she wanted to rent out,
but she also had the rest of Marcus' portfolio as well. Although
she had no particular plans for the buildings, she knew they
would only be sold to black owners. In the meantime, she would
be getting familiar with the neighborhoods and surroundings for
each of the buildings... Starting with 827 Baker Boulevard.
