Amiya walked back into the living room and she caught eyes with
her mother who was also walking into the living room.
Monica. Miya..
Monica's eyes landed on Josh as he stood up.
Monica. Hey..
She then she looked back at Amiya then at Marcus.
Marcus. Hey baby..
Amiya smiled as Josiah ran to her and she scooped him up in her
arms and held him on her hip.
Amiya. Hey my big boy.. How was your day?
Josiah. It was good..
Amiya. Good..
Monica sat down Aaliyah and Amiya made her way over to her as
well.
Amiya. Hey babygirl..
Amiya smiled at her and touched her stomach as she smiled.
Monica. So you're Joshua...
Josh. Yes ma'am..
Amiya sat Josiah on his feet and picked up Aaliyah out of her
car seat then took her seat next to Josh again.
Monica. It's nice to meet you...
Joshua. Nice to meet you too..
Monica. -looks at Amiya- You had something to say?
Amiya looked at her Monica and Marcus.
Amiya. Well.... I'm pregnant...
Monica and Marcus stared at her for a moment Monica looked over
at Marcus as Amiya waited for their reactions.

Marcus rubbed a hand over his face. His son was in federal
prison, and now his daughter was pregnant by a man she barely
knew anything about. He rose from his recliner and walked to the
bar, grabbing a glass and shaking his head.
Marcus. You fuckin' kids are gon' be the death of me, man.
Amiya. Daddy, it ain't like I planned this.
Marcus. You should have. This is the worst time for you to be
pregnant, Amiya. We don't know what's about to happen with your
brother, or you for that matter.
Monica. I got somebody handling it.
Marcus' eyes landed on his wife with raised eyebrows.
Marcus. Who?
Monica. Lincoln.
Marcus stared at her before pouring himself another drink.
Marcus. You called my damn nephew without me knowing?
Monica. Somebody had to help MJ.
Marcus. A million lawyers in this country and you called the one
I wouldn't trust to wash my car?
Monica. It's been years since all that stuff with Victor,
Marcus.
Marcus. His daddy was a snitch, apples don't fall too far from
the tree.
Marcus looked at Josh and Amiya as Josh held her hand,
comforting her.
Marcus. So what exactly is the plan here?
Amiya. With what, Daddy?
Marcus. This. You hate the spotlight, but you're having a baby
by the most visible nigga in the country right now? What's going
to happen when he goes on the road?
Josh. I offered Amiya a rental property I have so she has space.
Marcus. She ain't moving outta here.
Marcus put his glass in the sink.
Marcus. I know you're new around here, Josh, but when shit goes
down in this family, we close ranks. Not spread out. Her cousins
are all living back at home, we're in constant contact with each
other.
Josh. No disrespect, Mr. Greer, but this isn't your baby she's
having. It's mine. I would be more comfortable with her near me.
Marcus glared at Josh. Of all the guys she'd brought home, Josh
was the only one who'd spoken up against Marcus' wishes.
Josh. I understand this is a rough time for the family, but I'm
going to be apart of this family sooner rather than later. In
fact, it would probably be a lot better for Amiya to not be
here.
Marcus. Why is that?
Josh. Stress and dysfunction won't be good for her or our child.
Marcus stared at Josh and noticed something about him that he
hadn't seen in most men who spoke to him. Josh wasn't backing
down. He wasn't used to it, and he felt himself respecting Josh
in that moment. It reminded him of himself when he first met the
Wells family.

Amiya's heart sank as she looked at Monica and Marcus. She
watched as Marcus looked over at Monica as Monica cocked her eye
brow.
Monica. Stress and dysfunction?
Amiya. Mama...
Amiya looked over at Josh as he nodded and Amiya spoke before he
could.
Amiya. It's just been a lot going on and..
Monica shook her head and held her hand up.
Monica. It's been a hell of a lot going on, and we're still
going through it. And you're just going to up and move out
again?
Monica stared at Amiya who was at a loss for words.
Monica. You just got here... And you're already leaving?! Who's
going to help you with them kids?
Amiya. Ma.. Josh..
Monica. Josh is a football player who is going on the road.. And
I don't want you in some house with those kids by yourself.. You
know anything could happen, and MJ not here to look after you
either..
Monica took a deep breath and sighed. Amiya looked at Monica as
she shook her head. She knew Monica was trying to hold it all
together since Brandy had died, Marcus was shot, and MJ was in
jail. She knew her mother wanted to keep them under her watch as
much as possible.

Lincoln checked the address as he parked his car and got out.
Part of him didn't want to be there, but he knew the day would
come since he was back in Carver City that he would have to face
his family. He stepped lightly up the stairs and knocked on the
door, looking around the neighborhood of sprawled mansions. The
door popped open and he gave a small smile.
Lincoln. Hey, Aunt Monica.
Monica. Hey, what you need?
Lincoln. I spoke with MJ, if you and Uncle Marcus got time to
talk about it.
She hesitated, then sighed and stepped back to let him in.
Lincoln stepped into the house and looked as his uncle, cousin
Amiya, and a man he knew as one o the best football players in
the past 25 years stood in the living room.
Lincoln. Am I interrupting?
Marcus. Yeah, you are.
Monica. Marcus.
Lincoln. Good to see you, too, Uncle Marcus.
He looked at Amiya and nodded.
Lincoln. How are you, Amiya?
Amiya. I've been better.
Marcus. What do you want, Lincoln?
Lincoln's eyes landed on Marcus.
Lincoln. I spoke to MJ. Calhoun tried to stop it, but since Aunt
Monica put me on retainer, they had to let him speak to his
lawyer.
Monica. How is he?
Lincoln. All things considered, he's okay. He said he's feeling
better knowing that he's got family helping him.
Amiya. What's going on with him?
Lincoln. Well, it's a tricky situation. He signed a statement
admitting to everything. The organization, any trafficking, all
of it.
Marcus. Fuck!
Lincoln. That's why I'm here. Y'all have more experience with
Calhoun than me. If we can prove that he's crooked, it'll bring
a lot of scrutiny to any cases he's handled. If we cause enough
doubt in him, it could get MJ free.
Monica. You think that would work?
Lincoln. It's a long shot but until other things come to light,
it's the only shot we have.

Amiya nodded as she looked down at Aaliyah.
Amiya. I think it's possible.. We just gotta get him to tell on
himself..
Monica. He aint just gon admit he's dirty...
Amiya sighed as she thought about the couple times that she'd
been stopped by Calhoun. He would always give her a backhanded
compliment, and he never had a real reason for pulling her over.
Amiya. Well he's definitely a dick.. The last time we he pulled
me over for no reason, he told me I could have a real career in
laying on my back, and he'd be my first customer...
The room went silent and eyes fell on her.
Marcus and Josh. What?!
Amiya glanced at them and sighed. She decided to try to take the
attention of what she'd just said.
Amiya. What about a woman?
Monica. A pretty woman...
They were silent for a while and Amiya could see a light bulb go
off in Monica's mind.
Monica. I know just the woman...
