Picking up the Pieces

Amiya looked out at the lake as she sat on a park bench. She'd
just left an emergency doctor's appointment, and she was still
sorting out her thoughts. She sighed as she thought about how
her life had spiraled out of control in a matter of months. Now
that she was finally in a space to start picking up the pieces,
she'd made her way to the lake to get a peace of mind. She was
in need of some peace, especially since she'd just heard a
heartbeat that wasn't her own.
She bit her fingernail while her other hand tapped lightly on
her leg. She'd been replaying the look on Joshua's face the last
time they made eye contact. She had been thinking about it
constantly since she realized she would have to face him again,
and she still didn't know what to say to him. She didn't even
know if he'd agree to see her again. "Just call him... If he
don't answer... So be it.."
Amiya finally took a deep breath and pulled her phone from her
back pocket. She found his name in her contacts and she finally
dialed him. She put the phone on speaker and she listened to the
rings as she looked out at the water.
Eventually his voicemail picked up and she contemplated leaving
a message. When the phone beeped, nothing would come out, so she
just hung up. Since she couldn't bring herself to leave a
message, she decided to text him instead.
Amiya.:. Hey Josh.. I know this is long overdue, and I know
you've probably caught a lot of heat because of me. I really do
apologize from the bottom of my heart about everything... And
you probably don't want to see me anymore either, and I dont
blame you... But I would like to see you again... Just one more
time to talk..... Im at the lake right now if you're not busy...
Or we can meet somewhere else if now is a bad time..
She read the message a couple of times then she pressed send and
she sighed. Instantly, the weight of the fear to reach out to
him had disappeared.
Amiya normally didn't care how she was perceived or how other
people felt about her as long as she stayed true to herself. At
this moment though, she was nervous about what Josh had to say,
or if he had anything to say to her at all. While she was in
jail, she'd convinced herself that it'd be better if they just
never saw each other again, but as fate would have it, she was
carrying a piece of him, and she felt the least she could do now
is tell him.
While she was looking at the lake her phone rang. Her heart
skipped a beat, and she looked down seeing the name. "Mom" She
cleared her throat and answered it.
Amiya. Hey ma..
Monica. Hey baby.. Where are you?
Amiya. I told you I had a doctor's appointment..
Monica. Yeah... That was way earlier... Are you okay?
Amiya. Yeah.. I'm alright... It was just a check up..
Monica. Oh.. Okay.... Well I'm about to go run some errands
that's gon take me by the school, so I'll get Josiah and
Aaliyah.. I figured we could go see Deb...
Amiya smirked slightly.
Amiya. That sounds like fun... Tell her I said I love her...
Monica. You need to call her and tell her yourself..
Amiya. I can't right now.. I gotta go though.. I'll talk to you
later..
Monica. Alright. Love you pumpkin..
Amiya. Love you back..
The two hung up and Amiya sighed as she relaxed a little more
and continued to look out at the lake as she evaluated her life
again. "You finna be a single mom caring for 3 kids, staying at
your parents house, doing hair out the **** kitchen...."
Amiya. What the **** is life right now... **** you gotta shake
back....

Josh put the free weights down and shook his head as his
teammate and best friend Tate looked over at him. He checked his
phone and sighed before placing it back in its spot next to him.
Tate. Still nothing?
Josh. At all.
Tate. Damn. Sorry, bro. Chicks ghost dudes all the time.
Josh. This isn't just a "chick" Tate. She wouldn't ghost me like
that.
Josh looked up as a team representative walked in all smiles.
Rep. Just the man I'm looking for. Josh, we need you to do some
press today.
Tate. I don't think he's up to it. His girl ghosted him.
Rep. You're better without her, Josh. Can't believe the girl got
arrested by the FBI at a freaking wedding.
The rep laughed as Josh cut his eyes at him, forcing him to stop
in his tracks.
Rep. Sorry, man. Listen, Glenn was right, okay? Those kinds of
girls are the biggest distractions in the world. You should be
thanking him, that filter was genius.
Tate and Josh looked at the Rep, whose eyes grew wide.
Josh. What filter?
Rep. Um...I probably shouldn't say--
Josh. If you don't tell me, I'm going straight to Glenn...what
fuckin filter?
The rep sighed.
Rep. Glenn told team reps to get a filter on your phone. It's
like blocking a number but a little more complicated...so that
she couldn't contact you.
Tate. Are you fucking serious?!
Josh. Take it off.
Rep. Josh--
Josh grabbed the rep by his collar.
Josh. Take it the fuck off!
The rep shakily took the phone from Josh as Tate pulled him
back. Josh paced the floor, feeling his body temperature rise as
the rep went through his phone. He held it up when he finished
and Josh snatched it, reading the text message Amiya had sent
him. He glared at the rep.
Rep. I'm sorry, J.
Josh. I'll let Tristan deal with you fuckers, I'm going to see
my girl.
Rep. But the press run--
Josh. Fuck that press run! My girl needs me!
Josh grabbed his bag, slapped hands with Tate, and rushed
himself out of the gym...
...Josh pulled into the parking lot of Cedar Lake and called
Amiya's phone. It rang a few times before she answered.
Amiya. Hello?
Josh. I'm in the parking lot. Where are you?
Amiya. Down a little ways. Just walk down, you'll see me.
Josh. Okay.
He hung up and struck out walking. Within a few minutes, she
came into his view. She stood up when she seen him and he
immediately kissed her, embracing her as close to him as he
possibly could. They finally separated.
Josh. I missed you so much, Amiya.

Amiya's heart beat rapidly as Josh held her in his arms. She
rubbed the side of his face with her hand as she looked at him
and saw how deep his care for her went.
Amiya. I missed you too Josh..
She wrapped her arms around his neck and they squeezed each
other tight.. Once they finally released, she looked up at him
again and realized that he cared about her way more than she
thought he would, and it eased her nerves slightly.
Josh. How have you been? I just found out the fuckin rep had
some filter on my phone.. It's like they blocked your number or
some ****.....
Amiya thought about it for a moment then she shook her head.
"Damn.."
Amiya. I... I just reached out.... Maybe an hour ago..
Josh. You just got out of jail?!
Amiya shook her head as she sighed.
Amiya. I've been out... For a couple of months now..
Josh. What?! Why didn't you call me?.. I mean.. -sigh- Why you
wait so long?
Amiya sat back on the bench and Josh took a seat next to her.
Amiya. I didn't think you'd want to see me... I saw all of the
blogs and rumors and the **** was crazy... I even saw something
about your contract, and I didn't want to be the reason for
anymore bullshit in your life.. So...
Amiya shrugged.
Amiya. I didn't know what you would say.... And I thought it
would be easier for both of us if we just distanced ourselves..

Josh. Distanced ourselves? Amiya, I don't want to distance
myself from you.
Amiya looked over at Josh.
Josh. You don't want to see me?
Amiya. No, I do! It's just...I thought you would see how messed
up I am and decide you would move on.
Josh. Unfortunately, Amiya, there's no moving on from you at
this point.
He looked at her and sighed, looking over the lake.
Josh. The contract situation is tricky. There's a morals clause
in it that states if I do anything to bring bad press to the
team, they can drop me and not pay me a dime.
Amiya. You didn't do anything though.
Josh. Which is why it's tricky. They want it to be on my back.
They gave me an ultimatum.
Amiya. Which is?
Josh looked over at her.
Josh. Stop seeing you or they put the morals clause into effect.
Amiya sighed as Josh shoved his hands into his jacket pocket.
Amiya. I don't want to stand in the way of your money, Josh.
Josh. You're going to do that anyway. I fell in love with you,
Amiya, and that's not going away any time soon.
Amiya. Josh--
Josh. If they gave me an ultimatum, and I'm here with you, what
does that tell you?

Amiya. It tells me you're crazy..
Josh smirked at her slightly.
Josh. Only for you..
She looked at him while she sat there with a loss for words..
She didn't want him to put his career on the line for her, but
it wasn't her decision to make either. She knew that his
contract with Carver City was huge, and she knew the city was
happy to have him.
Amiya. I dont know what to say...
Josh. Just tell me how you feel..
Amiya looked at him for a couple of moments then she looked out
at the water as the thought a little longer.
Amiya. I got a lot of feelings right now...
Josh. Tell me about all of them..
Amiya looked over at him as she sighed slightly. He'd already
put his multi-million dollar contract on the table, so the least
she could do was let down her guard and be vulnerable with him.
Amiya. Well.. I feel lost right now... My accounts are frozen,
they're calling my shop evidence, and Jo and I have been forced
to moved back home... -sigh- My brother made a deal with a
crooked cop to get the rest of us off, and he left his daughter
with me... All that's on my heart right now.
She looked out at the water and she continue to spill her guts.
Amiya. I've been spaced out for the last few months and these
last few days have added more to my plate than a little bit... I
do love you though.. I was just scared to admit it.. You're such
a good guy and I'm.. -sigh- Hell. I need to figure out how to
take care of 3 kids and myself while doing hair out of the damn
kitchen..
She paused for a moment and she could feel him staring at her.
"Well shit..." Instead of looking over at him she looked down at
her hands while she played with her fingers.
Josh. You got another kid other than Josiah?
Amiya continued to looked at her fingers.
Amiya. I'm going to have another kid after Jo... In about 6 more
months..
She listened for his response and she took a deep breath
glancing over at him then looking back out at the water. "The
cats out of the bag now.."

Josh looked at the water and let out a heavy sigh, nodding. He
was happy. Ecstatic. But, part of him felt like it was
bittersweet. He wasn't supposed to even be near Amiya, but here
he was. Risking all of his hard work. He looked at her.
Josh. So...you're pregnant...
Amiya. Confirmed.
Josh. I was already determined to somehow make this work, now I
know I have to.
Amiya. I told you I don't want you to give up everything for me.
Josh. Amiya, this is probably my last contract anyway. I've been
playing longer than most people should, and I'm lucky enough to
never have been injured or anything. But, this was never the
endgame. I wasn't going to stay in the league until I was 40 or
anything.
Amiya. So, what is it?
Josh. Play out this final contract. Two years. I'll be right at
30 years old, I already have a ring. This contract will probably
get me another one. I'll retire to California or New York and
get on TV as an analyst.
They glanced at each other.
Josh. But, I've had three other contracts since I was 18,
started businesses. Money isn't my concern. You are. Josiah is.
Now, we have something together to handle.
Amiya. Josh--
Josh. Stop fighting me and let me love you, woman.
He smiled as she chuckled.
Josh. Amiya, I'm not giving up on us. I'll move the earth if it
means you and I can be together.
Amiya. That's a lot for just me.
Josh. You're worth it.
He reached over and took his hand in hers. Suddenly, his phone
began to ring. He picked it up, recognizing Tristan's ringtone.
Josh. Wassup, Tristan?
Tristan. Have you lost your mind, Josh?
Josh. What are you talking about?
Tristan. Why am I watching a live stream from a fan of you and
Amiya sitting by the fucking lake?!
Josh stood up and looked around, seeing a group of teenagers
with their phones fixed on he and Amiya.
Tristan. Glenn is calling me going insane, what were you
thinking?!
Josh. Tristan--
Tristan. You know they're going to pull your contract, don't
you?! Why would you go without security? Why would you go in
public?! You could have called her to come see you or something,
Josh! Damn!
Josh. She's pregnant, Tristan.
The line got quiet as Tristan sighed.
Tristan. Goddamn, man.
Josh. And I'm not--
Tristan. I know you're not, listen, just grab her and y'all
please get outta there. I'll call you later.
Josh. Okay.
Josh hung up and grabbed Amiya's hand.
Josh. We got to go.
Josh walked off this his truck, opening her door for her. He
waved at a few nearby fans who called out his name and climbed
in the driver's seat before pulling away from the curb.

Amiya. What's going on?
Josh glanced at her.
Josh. Some fans went live..
Amiya sat back and sunk down in the seat.
Amiya. Shit..
Amiya sighed as her head began throbbing with a headache. Since
she had been out of jail, she was hoping to stay out of the
public eye, and normally when she visited the lake during the
day, no one else was around or they just never paid her any
attention.
She held her head with her hand as he glanced over at her.
Amiya. You gotta take me home so you can go sort out your shit..
Josh. We're not done talking though... And I don't care about
that..
Amiya. Joshua...
Josh. I'll take you home, but we're going to finish talking...
Amiya sighed.
Amiya. Fine... But afterwards you have to go sort out this
mess... Tell them you won't see me again or something..

Josh. They're not going to believe me. They know me better than
that.
Amiya. Then what are we gon' do?
Josh. You're not raising my kid alone, so if that means I have
to say fuck football then that's what I'm going to do. What's
your address?
Amiya typed her address into his phone and Josh hit the highway,
his mind racing. The tense silence was broken by him speaking.
Josh. I'm going to help you.
Amiya. I don't need--
Josh. Either you're going to let me be your man and help you or
we're going through these motions for nothing, Amiya.
He cut his eyes at her as she stared at him.
Josh. I'm serious. Right now isn't the time for that independent
woman shit. You're a single mom, got your brother's baby, and
pregnant with no money and no business. I'm your man, I got
money, I'm helping. Shut up and let that shit happen or let me
know otherwise because I'll drop you off and send you money
every month from the road. Let me know.
They kept a steady stare at each other and she nodded.
Amiya. Okay.
Josh. I got a rental property nobody's living in, you can have
it. Did they take your license?
Amiya. No, just the shop.
Josh. Find a building and I'll give you the money to reopen.
Amiya. They're not gon' let me.
Josh. Nobody can tell you shit, you hear me? Everything is in my
name. I'll transfer it over to you when everything gets cleared
up, if you want.
Josh took his exit from the highway and pulled into her
neighborhood. He pulled into the wrap around driveway and
unbuckled his seat belt.
Amiya. What are you doing?
Josh. Meeting your parents. If we're doing this, there's no
better time than right now to do it.
She nodded and they climbed out of the truck. They walked up the
stairs and Amiya unlocked the door, walking inside.
Amiya. Daddy!
Josh watched as a man walked from the kitchen and he
straightened himself up, extending his hand.
Josh. Mr. Greer, I'm Joshua, sir. It's nice to meet
you.

Amiya stood staring at her father as he glanced at her then
taking a look back at Josh. He gave Amiya another glance then
looked at Joshua.
Marcus. Call me Marcus..
Marcus sighed and nodded them toward the sitting room and Amiya
lead the way. Amiya and Josh took their seats on the couch and
Marcus took his in the over-sized recliner.
Amiya all but held her breath as ESPN played on the tv. She
looked at her dad who had taken a bite of his sandwich. They
looked at each other then he looked at Josh. Once he swallowed
his food he looked back at Amiya.
Amiya. Can you call mom home please?
Marcus held up his finger and put his sandwich down to pull out
his phone. He relaxed in his chair and held the phone..
Marcus. Hey baby... Where you at?... Oh.. Well.. When you finish
grabbing them come by the house.. Amiya's here.. She said she
has something to tell us... Okay.. I'll tell her..
Marcus hung up and looked over at them. Before he could say
anything the tv caught his attention.
Reporter. Hey yall, remember a while back we reported there was
trouble with Coyotes Wide Receiver Joshua Ingram?
Reporter2. Yeahhh his girl Amiya Greer got arrested at a
wedding! -laugh- Allegedly she's a big Queen Pin.. Allegedly.
Reporter3. That's kinda hot.. Like a fine ass Griselda Blanco..
They all laughed.
Reporter. I guess man.. Turns out even after rumors about his
contract, he's just had to see her again. We got a live shot of
the two down by the lake from earlier today..
The three of them watched the live video clip of he and Amiya
interacting down by the lake until Josh stood up and his eyes
found the camera.
Reporter2. She must really be something special man... That's 50
mil on the line..
Amiya sighed and stood up holding her head. She'd been having
the worst headache lately and now she figured it was due to her
pregnancy.
Amiya. I have a headache... I'll be back..
She walked to the kitchen and sighed as she stood against the
counter with tylenol and a bottle of water. "Oh God.. What the
fuck.."

Josh cleared his throat as Marcus' eyes landed on him.
Marcus. What are they talking about?
Josh. A morals clause in my contract. It says that if I bring
any bad press to the team due to my moral choices, they can drop
me without paying me a dime.
Marcus. And my daughter is a bad moral choice?
Josh. They see it that way.
Marcus. She's not you.
Josh. She's close to me. It would be the same effect if one of
my siblings or a close friend done something. If it reflects
badly on me, it reflects badly on the team.
The two men looked at each other.
Marcus. And you're willing to give up 50 million dollars just to
be with my daughter?
Josh. It's a much more simple decision than everybody thinks.
Marcus. How so?
Josh shrugged.
Josh. I love your daughter more than I love football.
Marcus. You what?
Josh. I love her.
Marcus. You've only known her a few months.
Josh. I knew the first day I met her that she would be special
to me.
Marcus sized Josh up and Josh smiled.
Josh. I take it I'm not the type of man Amiya has usually
brought home.
Marcus. That obvious, huh?
Josh. She called me a square when I first met her, so I can only
imagine who she's brought home to meet you.
Marcus. I don't want either one of you to be thinking life is
going to be easy on you. You're a football player. Whether you
want it or not, you're going to be in the spotlight. In case you
didn't notice, we're a family who likes to be known and not
seen.
Josh. I understand that.
Marcus. Then you'll understand why your presence can cause
problems for the whole family?
Josh nodded.
Josh. I've considered it. If Amiya tells me she's too
uncomfortable to be with me, I'll completely understand it and
I'll back away from her as much as possible.
