Lacy sighed as she paced her floor tapping her phone in her hand
thinking about her next move. She grabbed her glass of wine off
of the dresser sipped it as she took a seat on the bed.. She
stared at the number in her call log and sipped her wine again
as she pressed it then put it on speaker. She felt her heart
beat almost out of her chest as the phone rang.
Her heart stopped when she heard his voice again.
       Amir. Hello?
Lacy. Why did you contact me? I told you not to ever call me
       again..
Amir. Why did you call me back?
Lacy was stumped as the line fell silent.
Amir. Let me see you... Please?
Lacy's silence continued for a few more moments while her brain
bounced around emotions. Finally she cleared her throat.
Lacy. I'm at the FourSeasons. I'll meet you at the pool on the
       roof...
Amir. Okay. I'll be there... 20 minutes?
       Lacy. Okay..
She hung up and tossed her phone to the bed and swallowed the
rest of her wine. She decided another night away from home
wouldn't hurt what she and her fiance were going through.. She
watched as another text came through, and she looked at the
       preview.
Hubby.:. Baby. Im sorry.. Please call me so we can....
Lacy sighed and turned her phone off and left it on the
nightstand as she refilled her wine glass and walked out of her
       room.
Moments later she was sitting at the bar with her wine sipping
it looking out at the pool as no one noticed her or bothered
her. Her heart was still racing knowing Amir was due any minute.
She couldn't help but have a mix of emotions about him.

Amir walked into The Four Seasons Hotel, looking around for the
elevator. A bell boy walked to him with a smile.
Bell Boy. Hello, sir, and welcome to The Four Seasons Hotel. May
       I help direct you?
Amir. Where's your elevator to the roof? I'm meeting a friend.
Bell Boy. Down the lobby and to your left, sir. There's a sign.
Amir took off through the lobby, looking as out of place as he
could. Among the suits and expensive jewelry, he was wearing
army fatigues. He made his way to the elevator, his foot lightly
tapping in his combat boot. His dog tags swung impatiently on
his neck. The doors slid open and he quickly got onto the
elevator and pressed 'Roof' on the console. A grin came over his
face as the elevator glided upward.
The elevator doors opened and Amir's eyes immediately landed on
Lacy. He felt his breath stagger as he stepped off. She looked
up from the glass of wine she was nursing and they locked eyes.
He spoke under his breath as they looked at each other from
       across the roof.
Amir. Shit, I missed you, baby...
Slowly, he made his way around the pool as she stood up,
straightening her dress. He stopped inches away from her as they
       stared at each other...

Lacy felt her body go numb as her heart threatened to beat out
of her chest. She felt a rush of emotions over her body as she
looked at him. She was angry because he left her, she was glad
that he was in front of her. She felt butterflies in her stomach
as she searched for something to say. She swallowed her spit and
       forced out a low greeting.
       Lacy. Amir...
Amir reached out and touched her hand gently and pulled her
lightly to him. She slowly wrapped her arms around his neck as
he wrapped her up in his arm and they embraced in a hug. She
inhaled his scent and it was different but still familiar. She
could still feel her heart pounding as she felt his breath on
       her neck.
       Amir. I missed you..
With those words she felt her body get hot and her face was
instantly flushed. She released her grip and pushed back from
him suddenly all while slapping him across the face.
She created an arms length between them again as his head turned
from her hit. He took a deep breath and looked at her as she had
tears in her eyes. She fought herself hard not to let any tears
escape. She didn't expect to feel like a teenager again, but
suddenly she was upset that he'd left her in the first place.
She was upset because she missed him too, and things were
different for her now. She wasn't supposed to feel anything for
him anymore.. He broke her heart. But she still felt what was
       only buried.
       Lacy. You left me, Amir..
She turned away from him as the tears became to heavy for her
eyelids to hold. She wiped her face but they continued to fall.
"Why the fuck are you crying?! Collect yourself." She took a
deep breath as she felt his presence closer.

Amir slowly wrapped his arms around Lacy. She resisted
momentarily, before relaxing her shoulders and hanging her head.
       Amir. I'm so sorry, baby...
       Lacy. You left me, Amir...
Amir turned Lacy around and grabbed her hands into his.
Amir. I couldn't just tell the government no, Lacy. You know
       that.
       Lacy. Why are you here?
Amir. Because, Lacy, I love you. I never stopped loving you.
As soon as the words escaped his mouth, he felt a lump on her
hand. He looked down and seen the huge engagement ring on her
finger. Lacy quickly took her hands back as Amir looked at her.
Lacy. I couldn't wait for you.
Amir. I didn't expect you too, either.
       Silence.
Amir. Does he treat you right?

Lacy looked at the ring on her finger and hesitated before
       answering him.
       Lacy. I... -sigh- He's a good man..
She looked up at Amir who was looking at her. Almost looking
       through her.
Amir. That wasn't an answer to my question..
Lacy. Well maybe I can't answer your question right now? Maybe
       Im still sorting things out..
       Amir nodded.
Amir. Is that why you're staying here?
Lacy opened her mouth then closed it again. She didn't want him
to know that things weren't okay, but she also doesn't like
simply keeping appearances. Truth is, she had been having her
doubts, and Amir being in front of her was just one additional
seed of doubt in her mind. She simply nodded and sighed as she
       took her seat again.
Lacy. We had a fight and I left the house... Tonight is my
       second night here..

Amir sat in the chair next to her, looking at her.
Lacy. It's stupid. I'm going home tomorrow.
Amir. Is that what you want?
       Another pause.
       Amir. Do you love him?
       Lacy. Of course I do.
Amir. Then why did you tell me to come here?
Lacy looked at Amir as he stared back at her.
Lacy. You said you wanted to see me.
Amir. You and I both know, Princess, that you could have turned
me down. You've done it before.
She sighed as Amir rose to his feet.
       Lacy. What are you doing?
Amir. I didn't want to make your life more complicated, Lacy. I
just...wanted to see if there was a chance. I knew there
shouldn't be. 6 years is a long time for anyone. But, I had to
       know.
       Lacy. Amir...
Amir. I won't disrespect what you have, okay?
Heartbroken, Amir grazed her cheek with his thumb.
       Amir. Stay beautiful, Princess...
Amir turned on his heel and began walking back toward the
       elevator.

Lacy watched him as his elevator doors closed and she felt her
heartbreak all over again. Just like that, again her was gone.
She downed the rest of the wine in her glass and stood from her
seat. She made her way to the other elevator and pushed her room
floor. Moments later she was back in her room sitting in the
middle of her bed. She was engaged, and there was no point in
running away if this was going to be her life...
After a few hours of contemplating her next move, she gathered
her items and checked out of the room. She got in her car. and
began to drive As she drove to her house, she couldn't stop
thinking about Amir being in town. For the longest time she
believed she would wear his ring, but life had gone so
       different.
When Lacy arrived at her home, she noticed the lights were on.
       "Good. He's still up."
She parked and left her items in the car, she knew they needed
to talk before he actually thought he was in the clear.
When she entered the house she went up the steps calling for
       him.
Lacy. Jasen! Sweetheart.. We need to talk..
She heard shuffling in her bedroom as she got closer to the
door. She pushed it open and saw him sweating sitting on the
edge of the bed in boxers. He looked as though he'd just
       finished working out.
       Jasen. Baby! You're home!
Lacy. Yeah.. I had to clear my mind...
Jasen. Yeah.. I'm so sorry.. I know I was wrong.. Im gonna make
       it up to you..
Lacy nodded and glanced at the bed that was messed up, and the
window that was open. She looked back at Jasen, and his eyes got
wide and they both rushed to the window. She got there just in
time to see a woman running to a car across the street in her
       panties and bra.
       Lacy looked at Jasen.
       Jasen. I can explain..
Lacy shook her head and pulled his ring off of her finger.
Lacy. I dont wanna hear it. Call her back. Give it to her
instead. Give her all this shit!
Lacy tried to brush past him but her grabbed her arm tight.
       Jasen. Bae..
       Lacy. Get off me!
She jacked her arm from him and rushed out of the room as he
       followed.
       Jasen. Baby. Please.. Just listen.
Lacy continued to storm out of the house and back to her car.
She pulled off from the house and she called the only person
that could make her feel okay. Moments later her call was
       answered.
       Amir. Hello?
Lacy. I need to see you.. Please?
       Amir. Are you okay?
Lacy cleared her throat from the tears.
Lacy. Yeah.. Can I see you?
Amir. Yeah.. Im just at my moms..
Lacy. I'll be there in 10..
Amir. You still remember where its at?
Lacy. I never forgot... Ill see you in a little bit..
       Amir. Alright..
Lacy hung up and dropped a few more tears as she took her turn
at the stop sign taking her Mercedes across the tracks.

Amir rose from the kitchen table where his mother, Gloria, was
       sitting and eating with him.
       Gloria. Where you going?
Amir. Something's wrong with Lacy. She just called me.
       Gloria rolled her eyes.
Gloria. Amir, remember what I told you.
       Amir. Mom...
Gloria. That girl can't have her cake and eat it too, baby. It's
       not fair to you.
There was a stiff silence before Gloria grabbed his hand.
Gloria. I know you love her, baby. But, she made her choice. You
need to let that thing stay buried.
Amir sighed and looked up when he seen headlights in the living
       room window.
       Amir. We'll stay outside, okay?
Amir walked through the living room and opened the screen door
before stepping out onto the porch. The night was quiet, a few
dogs in the area were barking and a few houses were hosting loud
guests. Lacy got out of her car and walked to the porch.
       Amir. You crying?
Before she could say anything, tears began freely flowing down
her face. Amir immediately wrapped her in his arms, running his
hand up and down her back as she sobbed into his chest.
Amir. What's wrong, Princess? What happened?
       He pulled back.
Amir. That dude didn't hit you, did he?
Lacy. No. He just...I caught him in our bed with another woman.
He sighed and embraced her again.
       Amir. I'm so sorry, Lacy.
Slowly, she wrapped her arms around his waist. He embraced her
tighter as she let her emotions seep out of her. Amir felt his
body get warm and he began taking deep breaths to calm himself.
Amir. If you want me to handle him, I will.
       Lacy chuckled lightly.
Lacy. This is the first time you've seen me in years and you're
ready to fight a guy over me?
Amir. I'll move a mountain for you, Princess. You know that.

       Lacy sighed.
       Lacy. I left the ring...
Amir looked down at her as she looked up at him. She raised her
hand to touch his face and he put his hand over hers. It was
almost reassurance that the huge rock she'd had was no more...
Amir. Why did you leave it?
Lacy. Because he doesn't love me... Because I still love you..
       Ive never stopped...
They released from each other and she sat on the porch swing
that she'd sat on years before. She looked at him and continued
       to spill her heart out..
Lacy. When you left, I thought that was it... Id already lost my
brother, and I didn't wanna lose you too... So... -sigh- then I
went off to college.. And I met him.. He was great.. But he
wasn't you.. But he was there for me when...
Lacy paused and decided against reliving one of the most painful
       nights of her life.
Lacy. I moved on...And I had to shut you out of my mind... I
didn't know what happened to you... And I was hurt that you'd
       left me...

Amir. I can't promise you I'm perfect, Lacy...and you already
know I don't have the kinda money you come from. But, being in
combat changed me. It made me start appreciating my life a lot
more. Seeing friends I made over there not come back home with
       me...
       Amir sighed.
Amir. I ain't got much to offer you, but you know I love you.
You're my world. If you can find it somewhere in you to give me
one more chance, I'll do whatever I gotta do to prove that
       you're my everything.
Lacy. I don't need you to prove anything to me, Amir.
Amir leaned in and kissed her softly. A kiss he'd been waiting
to give her for the better part of 6 years. Their hands locked
with each other as the kiss deepened. Slowly, they pulled back
and kept their foreheads against one another's.
Amir. Your parents are going to lose their damn minds when they
       see I'm back in town.
       Lacy laughed.
Lacy. I know...does your mama know I'm here?
Amir. She's not pleased, but she can respect it. She knows you
       got my heart.
Lacy's phone rang in her purse. She pulled it out and sighed
       when she seen it.
Lacy. It's my mother. Jasen probably called them already.
Amir. You want to answer it?
After a moment, Lacy cleared the call out and turned her phone
off. She looked up at him.
Lacy. I want to sit right here with you.
       Amir. You got it, Princess.
Amir wrapped Lacy tightly in his arms as the sound of crickets
came around them. A light breeze started flowing as they rocked
back and forth in silence, the love they tried to bury growing
       deep from their roots.
