Laila stepped out of the courtroom with a smile on her face as
her classmates followed her.
Shamar. Girl, you're going to be an amazing lawyer. That's why
Professor Phillips always gives you the second chair.
Laila. Oh, whatever.
The girls began signing out for the day.
Shamar. What y'all doing tonight?
Kelsy. Studying for exams.
Laila. My cousin invited me to a party.
Shamar. Which cousin?
Laila. Monica. I guess her boyfriend is having some kind of big
thing, and according to her, I need a break from all of this.
Shamar. And you do! All you do is work and study.
Laila rolled her eyes with a smile.
Laila. Really? You too, Shamar?
Shamar. Maybe you'll even find a man.
Laila laughed.
Laila. If I'm going to be senior partner by 30, you think I'm
going to have time for a man?!
Kelsy. You are a little uptight, Laila.
Laila. Everybody's against me!
The girls walked out of the courthouse and into the staff
parking lot.
Kelsy. I mean, it wouldn't kill you to have one night of fun,
you know?
Shamar. I know you're wearing something sexy as hell.
Laila. You mean if I go? You guys know I'm not a party girl.
Shamar. Girl, this is our last semester. I've known you since
the first day of freshman year and haven't seen you take one
alcoholic drink. Live. Please?
At that moment, a car pulled up. Laila paused when she seen her
cousins, Monica and LaTasia, and their friend Nichelle.
Monica. Get in, bitch, we're partying!
Laila laughed.
Laila. Monica, I have to change. I've been working all day.
LaTasia. You look cute in that, little cousin.
Laila. Thank you.
Monica. But it for sure ain't party material. Okay. Go home and
change, you still got the address?
Laila. Yes, I do. I'll be there in a couple of hours, okay?
Monica blew her a kiss and sped off as Laila shook her head.
Kelsy. Your cousins are so cool.
Laila. My cousins are dangerous. I love them anyway, though.
With that, Laila made her way to her car with Shamar and Kelsy,
who were more excited for her to be going out than she was...
...Hours later, Laila stepped into the party nervously. She'd
changed from her pantsuit to a form fitting dress and heels, her
long hair flowing for everyone to see. She maneuvered through
the sea of people until she found Nichelle, shoving a pill
bottle into her purse.
Laila. Hey, NiNi.
Nichelle. Wassup, boo?!
Laila. Everything okay?
Nichelle. Oh, yeah. Damn allergy medicine, girl. Come on, I'll
take you to Monica.
Nichelle pulled Laila back through the crowd and to a couch
where a gang of men sat.
Monica. Heeeyyy!
Monica and Tasia stood up and hugged Laila's shoulders.
Nichelle. She lookin good, ain't she?
Monica. Who you trying to be cute for, lil' girl?!
Laila. Oh, please, my daddy would kill me if he saw me in this.
Tasia. Good thing Uncle Otis ain't here, then.
Laila smiled and shrugged.
Monica. You remember Marcus, Andre, and Xayvion?
Laila nodded and waved at the three men before turning her
attention to two men she didn't recognize.
Monica. These are their friends Xavier Woods and Lorenzo
Winston.
Laila locked eyes with Lorenzo and a smile crept across her face
as she shook his hand.

Lorenzo smiled back at Laila as he glanced her body one time.
"Oww Wee.." They held hands for a little longer than normal
before the broke eye contact.
Monica. Whoop whoop. Excuse me?
Lorenzo and Laila both turned their attention to Monica as if
they'd snapped out of something.
Monica. Dont be looking at my cousin like that nigga.. I see
you.
Marcus. Let my homie do his ****..
Lorenzo. Na.. Money, you can't blame me..
Lorenzo looked Laila in her eyes again.
Lorenzo. Yo cousin is cold.. I'm just tryna join her fan club..
If she let me..
The two smiled at each other again and the couples paired off
but still stood close.
Laila. I'll think about it..
Lorenzo smiled at her then licked his lips.
Lorenzo. Don't think too hard now.. I'm only in town for a
couple more days..
Laila. Oh yeah?
Lorenzo nodded.
Lorenzo. We here for the big game tomorrow.. And a few days
after that..
Laila. You play football?
Lorenzo nodded again as everyone began to walk off to the dance
floor.
Lorenzo.Yes ma'am.. I play wide receiver..

Laila. Unfortunately, I'll be rooting against you.
Lorenzo. Ouch. Maybe I was going to go a little harder with you
being there.
Laila. You're more than welcome to it. I didn't say I wouldn't
be watching out for you.
Laila paused when a familiar beat dropped. She gasped and smiled
at him.
Laila. Let's dance.
Lorenzo. How you know I can dance?
Laila. Ain't My Type Of Hype makes everybody dance.
She pulled him to the floor as the party went crazy at the beat
drop. Everybody in the house danced and jumped around, a couple
of groups even jumping into full blown routines. Laila stayed in
front of Lorenzo the entire time as he held her body. She smiled
back at him as he bit his lip at her. She blushed and looked up
to see her cousins smirking at her. She rolled her eyes and
turned around.
Laila. You ain't too bad on your feet.
Lorenzo. Gotta be to play ball.
Laila. What are you in school for?
Lorenzo. Political Science. I'm gon' be the country's first
black president.
Laila smiled at him.
Laila. On top of a star football player?
Lorenzo. Football is just for the scholarship. I know where the
real money is gon' be. What about you?
Laila. Lawyer. I'm at the top of my class with one more semester
to go.
Lorenzo. My girl gon' be a lawyer?
Laila cut her eyes at him.
Laila. Your what?
Lorenzo. Oh, you're gon' be my wife. Whether you know that or
not.
Laila. You don't waste any time, do you, Lorenzo Winston?
Lorenzo. I see what I want and I get it...
Laila bite her lip as the song ended and the DJ came over his
sound system.
DJ. Slowing it down, y'all. Grab who you're with and let them
know how you really feel.
Lorenzo grabbed Laila within a second as Fire & Desire began to
play. She put her arms around his neck as they swayed to the
beat slowly, staring at each other.

Lorenzo held her close as he looked down at her. She looked in
his eyes and she slowly put her hands around his neck.
Lorenzo. So what you think? Laila Winston.. It sounds good
right?
She looked at him and let out a smile as he smiled back at her.
Laila. You just met me Lorenzo..
Lorenzo. I know enough... You the baddest girl I've ever seen...
And you smart.. you got dreams... And you smiling at me like I'm
smiling at you..
He watched as Laila pressed her lips together trying to stop
smiling as she rolled her eyes.
Laila. Well... Maybe I'm just teasing you..
He smiled at her then leaned to her ear.
Lorenzo. Well keep teasing me then baby. Cause I like it..
Laila shook her head and smiled again before she completely
relaxed into him. He held her closer and their bodies rubbed
together. She closed her eyes and he assumed she wanted a kiss,
as he was gearing up, she rested her head on his chest. He
opened his eyes and smiled as he was left looking at the top of
her head.
Once the song was over, they made their way over to the punch
bowl in the kitchen and he fixed both of their cups. He handed
her one then he took the other. They both took a sip and he
never took his eyes off of her.. She was the only person there
in his mind.
Lorenzo. So have you lived here all your life?
Laila nodded.
Laila. Born and raised..
Lorenzo nodded.
Laila. What about you?
Lorenzo. I was born in Chicago we moved to Hamilton Beach when I
got to high school..
Laila nodded.
Laila. What's Chicago like?
Lorenzo smiled as he thought about home.
Lorenzo. No other place like it.. I'll take you one day..
Laila smirked at him as he smirked back. Before they knew it
they was interrupted by Monica and Marcus.
Money. You still pushing up on my cousin?
Lorenzo laughed a little as Marcus cut in.
Blu. Yall havin a good time?
Laila. Yeah.. I'm glad I came..
Money. Good.. You bet not fuck with my cousin either.
Lorenzo smiled and looked at Marcus as he shook his head.
Blu. You c'mere..
He guided her away and Lorenzo and Laila looked at each other.
Lorenzo. She dont play no games about you huh?
Laila smiled back. Before she could get a proper word out the
moment paused with the sound of gun shots. Seconds later screams
from the living room were heard as the music cut.
Lorenzo looked at Laila and she looked spooked.
Lorenzo. C'mon..
He lead her out the backdoor and they ran from the house as
other people filed out with them. He held on to her hand tight
and he looked back at times to check on her. Once they'd made it
down the street away from the house they stopped in the middle
of the sidewalk.
Lorenzo. Are you okay?
Laila nodded.
Laila. Yeah...
Lorenzo watched as she crossed her arms to rub her shoulders.
Without another thought he removed his letterman and put it on
her shoulders as he looked down at her.
Lorenzo. Here.. Lemme help..

Laila took deep breaths as she and Lorenzo walked the dark
street.
Laila. I don't think I've ever been that close to guns.
Lorenzo. It's definitely not for everybody. It's okay, though. I
got you.
Laila looked at him as he stared at her.
Lorenzo. You're safe with me, okay?
Laila nodded as Lorenzo wrapped his arms around her. She held
her head in his chest and sighed.
Laila. I have to go back.
Lorenzo. Why?
Laila. I need to make sure my cousins are okay. I don't know if
either one of them got hurt, or--
Lorenzo. Let's wait, okay? I have to check for Xavier, but Coach
would kill us if he knew we were at a party the night before a
big game.
Laila. So...what do we do?
They both looked around on the almost abandoned street.
Lorenzo. I guess we just...wait?
Laila. It's cold, Lorenzo.
Lorenzo. Well, what you wanna do? This your city.
Laila checked her surroundings and grabbed Lorenzo's hand,
pulling him off.
Laila. There's a 24 hour diner near here. We can eat and wait
things out there before we walk back.

He followed her lead, and not 5 minutes later they were
approaching the diner. He looked held the door for her as they
walked in, and they took a seat near the back of the restaurant
near a window. Lorenzo looked across the table at her as she
looked down at the menu.
When she finally realized he was staring at her, she paused and
smiled at him.
Laila. What?
Lorenzo. Nothing... It's just that heaven has got to be missing
you right now.. I just know they're short an angel..
Laila smiled and shook her head.
Laila. You are a mess..
Lorenzo smiled as the waitress walked over and greeted them. He
took their orders and brought back her water and his orange
juice.
He took a sip of his orange juice as she looked back at him.
Laila. So.. Tell me something.. Like do you have any brothers
and sisters? Tell me something important..
Lorenzo paused for a moment and thought.
Lorenzo. Well.. I'm the second oldest of 4.. 3 brothers and a
little sister... I play basketball too.... Umm. I dont know
really... Once I graduate, I'm going to run for city councilman
and see how that goes.
Laila. You'll win...
Lorenzo smiled.
Lorenzo. You think so?
Laila. Yeah.. I'd vote for you..
Lorenzo. And with your vote, even if I'd lost I would still feel
like I won..
Laila smiled and shook her head. Lorenzo smiled back. The
waitress returned with their food and refilled their glasses,
then she was gone again.
Lorenzo. So Miss Laila.. Tell me about you...
He looked over at her with a smirk as she smiled at him back.
Laila. What do you wanna know?
Lorenzo. Everything about Laila..
He looked across at her then he took a bite of the burger he had
ordered.

Laila. I'm the oldest of 6. 4 boys, two girls.
Lorenzo. Damn.
Laila. Yeah, my parents are true old school southerners. No
birth control, no condoms if you're married. Got a gang of
cousins, you already know two of them.
Lorenzo. How are y'all cousins?
Laila. Our mothers. The Wells line is filled with women. Couple
boys sprinkled in through there, but the estrogen is strong.
They chuckled.
Lorenzo. You want a bunch of kids?
Laila. I think so. 4 or 5. Maybe it's just from growing up in
such a full house, I'm used to a lot of noise going on.
Lorenzo. I hear you. Why'd you choose law?
Laila. I've always wanted a career. Something that could
actually sustain me, not something that could drop me in a
second.
Laila bit into her french fry, and pointed it to him.
Laila. You're dangerous, Mr. Winston.
Lorenzo. How? I didn't do anything?
Laila. The eyes. Those eyes right there? They can suck a girl in
and make her think you're the world.
Lorenzo. What if I am?
Another moment passed where they stared deeply at each other.
Laila. You can't be. My mama always told me a man is supposed to
complement his woman, not complete her. Be perfect alone, and
make him an added bonus.
Lorenzo. You listen to your mama all the time?
Laila. Yup. She told me to steer clear of bad boys.
Lorenzo. Yet, here you are...
Lorenzo leaned forward on the table with a sly smirk and Laila
leaned forward, meeting him halfway.
Laila. I have a question.
Lorenzo. What's that?
Laila. How are you so sure I'm not bad for you?
Lorenzo's smile grew wider.
Lorenzo. I think I can handle you.
Laila. You haven't seen anything I'm capable of, Mr. Winston.
Laila sat back in her seat and wiped her hands.
Laila. Are you a virgin?
Lorenzo. I look like one?
Laila. Not particularly.
Lorenzo. Then, why you ask?
Laila. Because, I want to know if I'm taking somebody's
virginity on the way back to that house.
Lorenzo raised his eyebrows.
Laila. There's a nice little spot to duck off to on the
way...and you've got my attention enough to make me very horny.
Laila rose from her seat.
Laila. Pay. Let's go.
With that, she turned on her heels and walked out of the
diner...
...Laila kissed the side of Lorenzo's face as he groaned,
slowing his pace inside of her after his climax. They caught
their breath and stared at each other momentarily before both of
them laughed.
Lorenzo. So, can I handle you or what?
Laila. Adequate.
She smirked as he kissed her passionately again. She hopped off
the railing and pulled her dress down as he pulled his shirt
back over his head.
Laila. Now, we really do need to get back. If anybody is still
there, they're wondering where the hell we are.

Lorenzo adjusted himself again as they got back onto the
sidewalk. He looked over at Laila as she looked down the street.
Lorenzo. Well.. They gotta know we together...
Laila. Yeah.. They should..
They started on their walk again and a few moments of silence
passed before Lorenzo looked over at Laila and grinned then
looked ahead. He assumed she saw him out the corner of her eye
because she spoke.
Laila. What?
Lorenzo. You're a bad girl Laila Wells... You know that?
Laila laughed and shook her head.
Laila. Did you think I was one of the good ones?
Lorenzo smirked.
Lorenzo. I knew you was bad.. But girl.. Got me scared of you...
Laila laughed and shook her head.
Laila. Dont be scared now..
Lorenzo laughed a little too.
Lorenzo. Na.. You gon be my first lady though..
Laila shook her head.
Laila. You buggin..
He looked over at her and she glanced at him, then she turned
her attention to the road. He heard a car and a voice so he
turned around and they stopped walking.
LaTaisa. Where yall been?! We been looking all over for yall.
Laila. We went to get something to eat..
Lorenzo looked over and from the opposite direction, he could
see Marcus' car pulling up too.
Xavier rolled down the window as they rode up.
Xavier. Say nigga. We need to get back to the room.. Stacey said
he covered for us..
Lorenzo nodded and looked over at Laila. They stared at each
other.
Lorenzo. I guess I'll see you tomorrow right?
Laila. Yeah.. I'll be rooting for the home team..
He smiled at her and her pulled her body to him one more time
and her hand automatically held his face. The gave one last
passionate kiss as their onlookers began chatter.
Xavier. Boyy..
LaTaisa. Girll..
Marcus. Damn..
Monica. Nu-uh..
