Chante stood on the patio of their hotel room in her sundress
and slippers while she took on the breeze. The sun warmed her
skin as she looked around downtown Carver City. She and Lamar
had been in Carver City for a month now, and he'd met the
majority of his family, almost everyone but his dad.
She glanced at her phone that was sitting on the patio table,
and she still hadn't gotten her daily call from Myles. She
missed him like crazy, but he was starting to get used to how
things were going, and he'd even speak to Lamar when he saw him
in the background on Facetime.
While she was getting lost in her thoughts, she felt a presence
behind her. Then seconds later, she felt a familiar pair of
hands slip around her waist. The exposed part of her back
pressed against his bare chest as he held her close to him.
Lamar. What cha doin?
Chante. Nothing.. Thinkin..
Lamar. What about?
Chante turned around so they could be chest to chest.
Chante. Life.. Myles... And you...
She tapped his nose with her finger and he smiled a bit.
Lamar. Oh yeah?
Chante smiled.
Chante. I've been meaning to tell you though.. I'm really proud
of you..
Lamar. You're proud of me?
Chante nodded.
Chante. Yeah... Meeting a whole new side of your family for the
first time as an adult isn't easy.. And you're determined to
track down your dad.. I know you're still going through emotions
about all of this, but I'm proud of you for doing it..
She rubbed the side of his face as they both looked at each
other.
During the month, the both of them had gotten to know each other
in a lot of different ways. She'd also gone with him to meet all
of his family, and she held his hand every step of the way. In
their down time, they even had gone out to dates on the town.
Now after a total of 2 and a half months that they'd been
spending time together, she knew she had a lot of feelings for
him, and she couldn't stop them or slow it down. At the same
time, she didn't want to put too much pressure on him, so she
continued to just be there for him however he needed her since
he was still putting together new information about himself.

Lamar. I'm proud of you, too.
Chante. Why?
Lamar. Handling everything you handled with class. Sticking by
me like you have.
Chante. You would have done the same thing for me.
Lamar. Damn right.
Lamar smiled and checked his phone for the billionth time.
Chante. What's up?
Lamar. My mama is in town.
Chante. To find your dad?
Lamar. Nah. She's from here. My aunt Valerie said she's close to
tracking down Charles for me.
Chante. You're determined to meet him, huh?
Lamar shrugged.
Lamar. I got questions. Does he know I exist? Did he know all
this time? Did he fight for me? All of that. I already know I
got siblings.
Chante. Just don't go into it closed minded, okay?
Lamar smiled.
Lamar. Therapist Chante so sexy.
Chante. Shut up.
Lamar laughed as he picked her up, wrapping her legs around him.
Lamar. I got a question. Be real with me.
Chante. Always.
Lamar. You like it in Carver City? Or you prefer Hamilton
Beach?

Chante looked at Lamar with a slight question mark on her face.
Chante. It's really nice here, but everything is established
back home..
Lamar. So you'd prefer Hamilton Beach?
Chante. So let me think about it a little more... I've never
lived outside of Hamilton Beach..
Lamar nodded as he looked at her and she looked at him.
Chante. Are you thinking about moving?
Lamar shrugged slightly as he held onto her.
Lamar. I dont know.. I guess it all depends..
He carried her from the patio to the room and sat on the bed
while her legs were still around his waist. She nodded and
rubbed the sides of his face.
Chante. Well.. Maybe we'll just see how the next few days play
out... It is beautiful here though..
Lamar looked at her for a moment and she leaned down to kiss
him.. Just as she pushed him backwards onto the bed, she heard
her phone began to vibrate. She looked up and just she was about
to roll off of him, but he pulled her back for another kiss. She
smiled and kissed him again and he released his grip still
touching her ass.
Lamar. Damn...
Chante shook her head and answered her phone
Chante. Hello?
Stacy. Hey boss lady.. I was just checking in with you..
Chante. Oh. Hey Stacy.. I'm good.. I'm still out of town..
Stacy. Oh.. Okay. Miss Leighton keeps calling trying to make an
appointment, but I've been telling her that you're out of town.
She asked if you could call her..
Chante thought about it for a moment then agree'd.
Chante. Yeah.. I'll give her a call. Send me her contact
information and if she calls back tell her to email me.
Stacy. Okay.. Sorry to bother you.. Have fun..
Chante. No bother honey.. You have a good day..
Stacy. You too..
Chante hung up as she laid on her stomach.
Chante. My apologies.. Some clients need me even when I'm off
duty and -shrug- I don't have the heart to turn them away..

Lamar. Handle your business, baby, you know I'm not pressed.
Lamar lied back on the bed, staring at the ceiling as they lied
in silence for a while. Chante turned her head to him and he
glanced at her.
Chante. Talk to me.
Lamar. I'm just trying to imagine the worse case scenario so
that I don't get my hopes up over this nigga.
Chante. Lamar...
Lamar. I mean, I'm not trying to think negatively about him. I'm
just saying, it's a real possibility he don't wanna know me.
Chante. What will you do if that's the case?
Lamar. Can't say I blame em, I guess. He doesn't know me, hasn't
known me in 30 years. Why get to know me now, you know?
Chante. Lamar, do you want a relationship with him?
Lamar paused. He'd never really asked himself that. He felt like
it was an obligation to himself to have some kind of
relationship with him.
Chante. I mean, what if he genuinely doesn't want a relationship
with you?
Lamar. I don't know. I mean...it'll fuck with me, but I can't
force things. I would at least want a relationship with my
siblings, though.
Chante. I understand. Would you still want to live here if you
and him don't have a relationship?
Lamar. Maybe. Maybe not. I don't want to hold anybody near me if
they don't want to be.
Chante. You said your mother called him a piece of shit.
Lamar. And Lorenzo ain't shit so I can imagine...
Chante scooted herself closer to Lamar, cuddling with him.
Lamar. Maybe this was a bad fuckin idea...

Chante. No it's not a bad idea...
She laid under him as she ran her finger across his stomach.
Lamar. How do you know?
Chante smirked and looked up at him.
Chante. The heart wants what it wants..
He looked down at her and raised his eyebrow as she smiled.
Chante. You want to know who he is.. That's in your heart.. I
can tell cause you're so determined to find him..
Lamar. I just wanna know some things..
Chante. And you deserve some answers... But no matter how it
turns out, you won't be stuck wondering..
Chante looked up at Lamar and they made eye contact before he
turned his attention back to the ceiling and sighed.
Chante. Just relax... And even if he doesn't want a relationship
with you then its his loss..
Lamar. Oh yeah?
Chante. Yeahh.. I believe so... I kinda like you..
Lamar smirked.
Lamar. I cant believe at 30 Im trying to track down the man that
made me... Like. This shit is crazy..
Chante nodded.
Chante. It's okay.. Maybe we can track down my dad too after
this..
Lamar smirked again.
Lamar. Aint your parents still married?
Chante. -smile- Na. Joe is technically my step dad.. He
basically raised me though... I haven't seen my real dad since I
was about 13.
Lamar. Oh.. Damn.. I aint know that..
Chante shrugged a bit as she continued to lay under him.
Chante. I don't talk about him much cause there's not much to
say.. He was always in and out.
Lamar. Where is he now?
Chante. I honestly have no clue..
Lamar. Do you know his family?
Chante. Yeah.. My favorite cousin is his niece.. But.. Iono.. He
told me he'd be right back and I haven't seen him since..
Lamar. Oh.. Damn.
Chante shrugged slightly.
Chante. That's why this is important though.. One day you might
not be able to get your questions answered, and who knows..
Maybe he's changed since your mama last saw him... I just want
you to get some sort of closure from this.. It helps...

Lamar. Is this what being with you is gon' be like?
Chante. What?
Lamar. Free therapy.
Chante laughed as Lamar kissed her.
Lamar. You a real one, Chante.
The two stared at each other in silence. The silence was broken
by Lamar's phone ringing. He rolled over to see his aunt
Valerie's name flash across the screen.
Lamar. It's Val.
He sat up and answered the phone immediately.
Lamar. Hey, Aunt Val. Wassup?
Valerie. I need you to come with me. Some woman called this
morning and said she had some information about your daddy, but
she wouldn't tell me over the phone.
Lamar. Is he okay?
Valerie. I don't know, that's why I wanted you to come with me.
You deserve to hear whatever she has to say. Meet me at the
police station.
Lamar. I got you.
Lamar hung up and looked at Chante.
Lamar. Somebody at the police station has information on my dad.
Within minutes, the two were dressed and headed out of their
hotel room to the police station.

Chante looked over at Lamar as he clenched the steering wheel.
She knew he was anxious to learn whatever new information he
could about his dad. She rubbed his shoulder and he glanced over
at her and relaxed slightly.
Lamar. I look nervous...
Chante. A little..
Lamar smirked and sighed.
Lamar. Have you heard from Myles yet?
Chante. Na.. I'm still...
Just before she could finish her sentence her phone began to
ring in her hand. She smiled when she saw herself on her phone
screen with Myles name calling in.
Chante. He's actually calling me now..
She answered and smiled when she saw her smiling boy.
Chante. Hey baby!
Myles. Hey mama! What you doing?
Chante. Nothing really. Just getting out of the hotel with
Lamar..
Myles. Hey Lamar!
Chante put Lamar in the view of the camera and Lamar glanced and
waved.
Lamar. Hey lil man
Chante looked back into the phone and smiled as Myles laid on
his stomach.
Chante. What are you doing?
Myles. Nothing.. Just playing my game..
Chante. How'd you sleep?
Myles. It was good.. I had a bad dream though. I miss you..
Chante. Aww. Honey. I miss you too..
Myles. Can I come see you?
Chante. You know you're supposed to be spending time with your
dad..
Myles. He's gonna be out of town this weekend.. Can I please?
Chante. Yeah.. As long as your dad doesn't mind though..
Chante watched as Myles smiled at her.
Myles. Okay. I'm gonna go tell him...
Just then the phone hung up and Chante looked over at Lamar as
Lamar glanced at her.
Lamar. So Myles coming in for the weekend?
Chante nodded.
Chante. Sounds like it.. I miss my baby..
Lamar smirked as they pulled up at the police station, then he
took a deep breath.
Chante. It's gon be okay..
She watched as another car parked behind them.
Chante. It looks like your Aunt just got here too..

Lamar nodded and got out of the car as Valerie stepped out.
Val. Hey, sweetie.
Lamar. Hey.
Val. You okay?
Valerie embraced him and he sighed.
Lamar. I don't know. Depends on how this goes. You said y'all
ain't heard from him in a month?
Val. He said he was going to get himself clean and sober, then
he would be back.
Lamar nodded and followed Valerie into the station. He smiled
when he felt Chante's hand slip into his. They stepped to the
front desk.
Val. Hello, we're here to see Detective Ramos? We're the family
of Charles James.
At that moment, a young Hispanic woman walked out.
??. I'm Detective Ramos. LaCienaga Ramos.
Val. I'm Valerie James, this is my nephew Lamar, Charles' son.
LaCienaga. Let's step into a private room.
Lamar followed, his hands growing sweaty with nerves. When the
trio stepped into the room, there was a young man sitting at the

Chante looked at the kid then looked back at the detective as
she held her hands together. Chante continued to hold Lamar's
hand while he looked at the detective too.
Ramos. I'm glad you could make it in today.. I'm afraid I have
some troubling news about Charles..
Valerie. What happened to him?
Ramos sighed slightly as she looked at the kid then at Lamar.
Ramos. Charles is dead..
Valerie and Lamar. What?!
Chante held Lamar's hand tighter as her heart dropped. She knew
there had to be a reason that he wasn't around, but she didn't
think he'd be gone.
Valerie. What happened to him? He was supposed to be going to
get sober a month ago..
Lamar looked over Valerie then looked back at detective Ramos.
Ramos. It's been ruled a homicide, and unfortunately that's all
I can disclose at this point in time.
Valerie. Oh. God.. He was killed...
Valerie grabbed the arm of a chair and took a seat in it.
Lamar. -sigh- Do you have any leads?
Ramos. Well. I was hoping Valerie would know if anyone had an
issue with him.. -looks at Valerie- You were listed as his next
to kin on everything we found on him.
Valerie continued to look dazed off into the corner of the room
then looked back at the detective.
Valerie. I... I dont know.. I haven't spoken to him hardly..
I... Oh my God.
Ramos. Yeah.. I know it is a lot to process, and I'm sorry I
don't have better news for you guys..
Chante watched as the kid got up from the table.
??. I need some air.
He left the room without another word.
Ramos. While looking for Charles we found Malik living by
himself in an old run down house. He said he hadn't seen his
mother in 3 weeks, and since we already know the fate of
Charles, we couldn't leave him there...
Valerie. Why were yall looking for my brother anyways?
Ramos paused a moment and sighed.
Ramos. We thought he'd have some useful information on a case...
But Malik will have to go to a foster home, if we can't find
anyone to take him in since he's 15.. You were the only contact
we had..

Lamar looked at Valerie.
Val. I can't afford another mouth in the house.
Lamar. I'll take him.
All eyes fell on Lamar as he stared at Detective Ramos.
Ramos. Are you a resident of Carver City?
Lamar. Nah. I'm from up north. But, he's my little brother.
Chante. Baby, are you sure?
Lamar. I'm not letting another brother grow up without family
around him.
Val. Lamar, raising a teenager is a lot of work.
Lamar. Look...he just lost his father, nobody knows where his
mother is. He's alone and he's lonely. Aunt Val, I understand
you don't have the room, but I do. I don't have any kids, I'm
still getting military benefits and a little check. I'm starting
a business soon. I want to do it.
He let Chante's hand go and kissed her cheek.
Lamar. I'ma go talk to him.
Lamar took off out of the small room and toward the front. As
soon as he stepped outside, he saw Malik sitting on a bench and
staring at a tree. Lamar slowly sat beside him and stared at the
same tree as they sat in silence.
Malik. So, you're my brother?
Lamar. Looks like it.
The two glanced at each other.
Lamar. And I know it's random to throw at you at a time like
this, but I want to bring you to live with me.
Malik. What?
Lamar. If our father is gone and nobody can find your mother,
they're going to put you in a foster home. And I'm not letting
that happen.
They looked at each other again.
