Samone sat outside on the steps of Savannah's house while she
looked out at the little kids playing basketball in the street.
It had been a month since she'd stabbed Rick and left her foster
home.. She didn't even go back to school or to the hospital. She
had no idea if she was wanted, or if she had even graduated.
PArt of her was still fearful that she would get into trouble
for assault even though she was defending herself.
That night, after Savannah picked her up from the park, she even
tossed her phone in the trash. She didn't want to have anything
to do with them ever, and she didn't want to be contacted. In
her panic, she didn't realize it meant Leo wouldn't be able to
contact her either.
Once she'd realized she didn't have his number anymore, she used
the internet to the best of her ability and she came up empty
handed. She couldn't find him on any social media sites, and she
knew he probably wouldn't be able to find her if he tried. Part
of her was just hoping she'd run into him again, but she knew
the chances were slim since she hadn't left Savannah's house.
Samone let out a sigh as the door behind her shut. She looked
back at Savannah who was taking a seat next to her on the porch.
She and Savannah were siblings from Miss Marlene's foster home,
and the first day Samone got there, Savannah formerly known as
SaVaughn was the first person to be nice to her. With that
simple gesture, they bonded. They both stuck up for each other,
and became family. Even after her surgery, Samone was one of the
first to meet Savannah.
Savannah. Im glad to see you're finally out of the bed and
breathing fresh air again..
Samone looked over at Savannah then she looked back out at the
kids while Savannah sat down.
Samone. I figured I need to start doing something again. The
first step was coming outside.... I can't stay in your house
forever..
Savannah. I told you that you can stay as long as you want
Samone..
Samone. I know.. But.. -sigh- I have to do something with my
life.. I need a job..
Savannah looked over at her.
Savannah. You dont wanna go back to the hospital?
Samone. I dont even know if they'll accept me.. I had another
week to finish it out.. And... They've probably dropped me by
now like everyone else..
Samone sighed lightly as Savannah continued to look at her.
Savannah. You still worried about that guy?
Samone nodded slightly.
Samone. Yeah... He probably thinks I'm a real bitch for going on
a date with him and not talking to him anymore..
Savannah. Well.. If you explain, then maybe he'll understand why
you haven't been able to speak to him.. After all Samone.. That
animal attacked you..
Samone sighed and looked down at her fingers thinking about the
night again and all the blood.
Samone. I uhh.. I think I'm gonna go to the store.. You want
anything?
Savannah. Na.. You wanna take my car?
Samone. No.. I'll walk..
Savannah nodded and Samone stood up dusting off her bottom and
she began to walk down the street with her hands stuffed in her
pockets. She continued to think about how much stuff she needed
to get in order, and she could feel the mounting pressure on her
shoulders..
... When she made it to the convenience store, she began to walk
down isles searching for a chocolate bars that would soothe her
temporarily. She could hear what the thought was a familiar
voice at the front of the store.
??. Can I get $15 on pump 3?
Samone peaked around the corner and sure enough she saw
Dominique at the counter. They met eyes briefly and Samone
ducked back behind the candy. "Oh shit.."
Dominique. Samone?! Is that you?
Moments later Dominique was standing in front of her looking
excited.
Dominique. Oh honey! We were so worried about you.. When you
didn't come back we'd thought the worst... Im so happy to see
you! Why didn't you come back?
Samone sighed as she let her thoughts bounce around in her head.
Samone. I.. I had an emergency.. With my sister... I had to be
there for her.
Dominique. Oh... Okay... Is your sister okay now?
Samone nodded.
Samone. She's fine now...
Dominique. Oh.. Okay. Well.. If you want to come back... I could
probably talk to Marla for you...
Samone. Uhh..
Dominique. Well.. Whenever you're ready.. You still have my
number right?
Samone. I dont.. I lost my phone a while ago..
Dominique picked up a pen off the counter and wrote her number
down on the receipt and handed it to her.
Dominique. Here.. Let me know when you're ready to come back
okay?
Samone nodded and slid the paper in her pocket. Samone was about
to walk off but Dominique spoke up again.
Dominique. Oh yeahh! I almost forgot.. That guy you went out
with.. He came to the hospital looking for you like two weeks
ago..
Samone. He did?
Dominique nodded then she began digging in her purse.
Dominique. He told me to give you this..
Dominique handed Samone a folded piece of paper, so she unfolded
it and read it."Hey Samone, I've been calling and your phone and
it's been going to voicemail, and I went by your house and some
woman said you didn't live there anymore. I dont know what's
going on, but I hope you're okay. If this finds you call me..
-Leo" She smiled when she saw his number scribbled at the bottom
of the paper. She looked up at Dominique and smiled.
Samone. Thank you... I gotta go now..
Dominique. No problem.. Remember let me know when you're ready
to come back..
Samone nodded and rushed out of the store without getting
anything. As far as she was concerned, she had gotten more than
what she went to the store for.
... When she got back to the house she rushed in the living room
as Savannah looked at her.
Savannah. What's wrong?!
Samone. I got a note from Leo and he left his number!
Savannah. What?
Samone. Yeah. I saw my mentor from the hospital, and she gave me
a note from him! I have his number!
Savannah smiled at her.
Savannah. Well call him..
Samone's smile faded slightly as she thought about how the
conversation would sound.. She finally swallowed her nerves and
picked up the house phone. She dialed the number and waited for
a few rings as her heart pounded.
When the line finally picked up she heard his voice.
Leo. Hello?
Samone. Leo? It's me.. Samone. I got your note..

Leo sat up in his bed, lightly patting baby Aeson on the back as
he burped him.
Leo. Samone? Thank God, man, I thought something bad happened. I
been freaking out, I went to your house, I went to the
hospital--
Samone. I know.
Leo. Where are you? I'm coming to you.
Samone. I don't know if that's a good idea?
Leo paused.
Leo. Did I do something?
Samone. No! I mean...no, Leo, you didn't do anything. I promise.
Leo. Then wassup? I want to see you.
Samone. I'm staying with my sister in Little Haiti.
Leo. Give me the address.
Samone. Leo--
Leo. I said I'm coming to you, Samone. If anything you owe me an
explanation to my face. So give me the damn address, and I'm
coming to you.
Samone sighed and read off the address as Leo typed it into his
GPS. He slipped his shoes on his feet and made his way to the
master bedroom, handing Aeson over to Amir.
Amir. Wassup, lil bro?
Leo. Samone called, I'm going to see her.
Amir. You gon' be okay?
Leo. I'll be fine.
Leo kissed Aeson's head and rushed out, grabbing his car keys
from the side table in the living room...
...15 minutes later, Leo was pulling up in front of a townhouse
and a saddened Samone sat on the porch. He parked the car and,
upon realizing it was him, she rose to her feet. Leo all but
jumped out of the car and ran to her. He scooped her in his arms
and squeezed her as tightly as he could without harming her.
Samone. Damn.
Leo. I fuckin missed you, girl. Wassup? What you doing in Little
Haiti?
Samone. I had to get away.
Leo. From what? Me?
Samone. No, I told you that you didn't have anything to do with
it.
Leo. Then what is it, Samone?
She sighed and looked away from him.
Leo. Just tell me, Samone. I'm not gon' judge you or anything.
Talk to me.[/center]

Samone sighed as she thought about what to tell him and how. She
glanced at the ground and then back at him.
Samone. After you dropped me off at home, things got crazy... So
I tossed my phone before I remembered to get your number..
Leo continued to look at her with a puzzled look.
Leo. Why you toss your phone?... What's happened?
Samone thought about her words a little more then she had a
quick flashback to sitting on the counter crying with glass in
her back while he violated her. She became disgusted with
herself again until his voice broke her thoughts.
Leo. Samone?
She looked at him again and the she looked at the ground while
she let out her truth.
Samone. He walked in on me after I'd just gotten out of the
shower..
Leo. What?
Samone continued to look at the dandelion that was growing in
the yard while she found her words.
Samone. He was saying how his wife didn't want me there and I
owed him for keeping me around... Then he forced himself on me..
She paused for a moment as she felt tears fill her eyes.
Leo. Samone... Did he...?
She continued to look down but she spoke lightly.
Samone. No... He didn't...
She took a deep breath and continued.
Samone. I got ahold of a pair of scissors and I stabbed him a
couple of times... I just wanted to get him off me... There was
so much blood..
Leo lifted her head gently with his finger and she looked up at
him with tears in her eyes. She closed her eyes and felt the
tears make trails down her face. While her eyes were closed, she
felt his hands wipe her cheeks the he wrapped his arms around
her again.
Samone. I threw on some clothes and I left as quick as I
could... My sister picked me up from the park and I've been here
since.. I thought they would use my phone to track me or
something so I tossed it.. Im sorry I had you worried.. I just
didn't know what to do.. I was so scared.. I dont even know if I
killed him...

Leo. I'm guessing you didn't. My sister hasn't said anything
about a death on the news. That's all she watches.
Samone. Good.
Leo. I went by there to find you.
Samone looked at him.
Leo. That lady didn't seem to be too bothered that you wasn't
around. No police presence or nothing.
Samone. I guess that's good.
Leo. I mean, are you safe here? I know it's your sister, but do
they know you could be here or anything?
Samone. Nah. She's a sister from a different foster home, they
don't know her. Even if they did, everybody in this neighborhood
loves Savannah. So, if anything happened to her? They would want
blood.
Leo chuckled.
Leo. My mama was that lady in our neighborhood back home.
Samone. You ever think about going back there? To San Fierro?
Leo. Sometimes. That's where my childhood friends are and shit.
But, this might be better for me.
Samone. How so?
Leo. I wasn't doing anything there but getting into trouble.
Here, I got family, friends...I'm meeting some special people
here.
Leo glanced at Samone and she smiled. The door popped open and a
woman poked her head out.
Savannah. Mone, you good?
Samone. Yeah. This is Leo.
Leo stood up and extended his hand as Savannah stepped out of
the house, greeting him.
Leo. Nice to meet you.
Savannah. Nice to meet you, too. Damn, Samone, he fine as fuck.
Leo chuckled as Samone glared at Savannah embarrassed.
Samone. Really?
Savannah. He is. Lucky you found him first. Y'all hungry? It's
food in there.
Leo. I could eat.
Savannah held the door open as they walked into the house.
Samone. Where you going?
Savannah. Work, I was taking the day off, but one of the girls
isn't coming in. Watch her get mad because I pull in double.
Samone. Anything I should know?
Savannah. Ain't nobody coming in here on you. If they do, my gun
is under the pillow on my bed.
Savannah looked at Leo again.
Savannah. Don't be too hard on my little sister.
Leo. Nah, never that.
Leo smiled at Samone and Savannah shook her head, walking off.
Savannah. Child...
Savannah left out and Leo smiled.
Leo. That's your sister?
Samone. In full craziness.
Leo. I like her. She cool.[/center]

Samone. Yeahh. That's been my day one since day one....
Leo. Oh yeah?
Samone. Yeahh.. We became siblings at Miss Marlene's.. And she'd
always be the one to find me when I got lost..
Leo nodded.
Leo. Get lost?
Samone shrugged.
Samone. I get lost sometimes.. But that night, you did come to
mind.. But I couldn't..
Leo. You could have called me too.. I would have came right back
for you...
Samone shook her head a bit as she thought about it.
Samone. I didn't want you to be involved...
Leo looked at her again and she looked down slightly.
Samone. I know you'd already had your run ins with the police,
and I didn't want to involve you... Plus that's a lot for a
first date.. We'd technically just met...
Samone looked over at Leo as he shook his head.
Leo. I dont care.. I would have come back for you...
Samone stared at him for a moment. She believed he would have
returned for her, but her own parents hadn't returned for her.
She looked him in his eyes a little longer and seen something
that she'd never seen.
Samone. Leo...
He looked at her, and she thought to herself for a moment before
she decided to let him in..
Samone. I'm like the poster child for this country's bullshit
foster care system.. I have mommy and daddy issues on top of my
trust issues with most people... It seems like I always have
something to stress over, and I dont know where the fuck I'm
going in life because the only real direction was taken from me
when I was 12.. I can't seem to do anything right, and I am
always finding myself in situations that cause me to react...
-sigh- I dont know what is wrong with me...
Leo cut her off.
Leo. There's nothing wrong with you..
Samone looked at him a few more moments.
Samone. How do you know?
Samone looked at him as she thought about everything she's been
through. In the last few months she has been having a tough
time, and she was just about at her breaking point.

The two stared at each other.
Leo. I know we barely know each other, I know this has all been
brand new and happening fast. But, it's something about you.
It's your face, it's your attitude, it's your smile.
Samone. What about it?
Leo. It makes me want to be better. My tio always told me that
the woman meant to be in your life is the woman you'll want to
upgrade yourself for.
Samone chuckled.
Samone. To be fair, you haven't seen a woman steadily in years.
Leo. True...but I don't feel like I need to. As soon as I saw
you...I don't know, it was like something in me switched and I
knew I had to get my shit together if I wanted a girl like you
in my life.
Samone. Leo...
Leo. I know that shit's heavy. I ain't mean to drop it on you
like that.
Leo reached across the table and pulled Samone's hands into his.
Leo. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, Samone. But, whatever
it is, I know I want to do it with you by my side.
He paused and sighed.
Leo. I'm scared of what's bout to happen too.
Samone. What do you mean?
Leo. Well, with Lacy having her baby now, it makes me feel like
I need to move out. I know they'll say they want me to stay, but
they're trying to start their family and their life together.
But, I'm not in a great place with my mom yet and she's going
back out west. I refuse to live with my pops.
Samone. What about your brother Lamar.
Leo. He's in Carver City. Liam is in Europe recuperating from
his attack so...I'm kinda stuck not knowing anything.
Leo looked at her.
Leo. Let's figure this thing out together, Samone... [/center]

Samone stared at him in his eyes for a moment.
Samone. Really?
Leo nodded.
Leo. Yeah..
She thought about it a little longer then she nodded.
Samone. Okay... Lets do it..
A smile crept across her face as he smiled back.
Leo. You mean it?
Samone nodded.
Samone. Yeah.. We can figure it out together..
He made his way from around the counter and scooped her up in
his arms. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on tight
as he hugged her again. While they embraced, she couldn't help
but think of what she felt for him. In truth, she felt the same
way, like she could take on the world with him next to her.
Once he finally put her back on her feet she leaned forward to
kiss him.
Samone. I'm so glad you're here.. Now.. I didn't think I'd get
to see you anymore..
Leo smiled.
Leo. I'm just glad you're okay.. Don't go disappear on me again
though. Alright?
There foreheads rested on each others as she looked into his
eyes and nodded slightly and spoke in a hushed tone.
Samone. Okay.. I'm sorry.. I just gotta get away sometimes...
She sighed thought about on of the first time she'd ever ran
away.
Leo. Its okay though.. You aint gotta go nowhere. I got you...
You trust me?
Samone nodded again and Leo leaned down to kiss her. In that
moment, while in his arms, she felt safe. She couldn't remember
the last time she felt safe with someone she'd known for such a
short amount of time, but something about Leo just felt right.
Her trust issues melted aways she she melted into his arms while
they continued to kiss. "God put us back together... We've
reconnected.."
