Ready Or Not

Lacy stood in the middle of an empty living room as she
continued to smile at her surroundings. Even though she wasn't
originally on board with moving to a new city, she realized that
it would be okay to have a new start after everything that had
gone on. She looked out the window to the front yard as Amir and
the realtor stood talking. Just then Leo broke her gaze.
Leo appeared walking from the back of the house.
Leo. Yo. This is wassup.. All the rooms a good size, and yall
got a pool in the back.. With a garage and the sun room.. AND
the neighbors aint too close.. This dope..
Lacy smiled.
Lacy. I know! I'm so in love with it.. And the kitchen...
Leo cut his eyes at her and she laughed.
Lacy. I can cook when I want to... He's just amazing..
Leo smirked and shrugged.
Leo. Yall make it work.. I just hope my future wife can cook.
Cause I cant..
Lacy. Oh. You gotta be able to do something.. Ima help you..
Leo raised his eyebrow again and Lacy laughed then she looked
over at the door as Amir walked back through it.
Amir. It's all ours...
Lacy. Like no waiting or anything?
Amir. The owner is signing over the deed right now.. We'll
probably start moving this weekend..
Lacy's mouth dropped slightly and before she could utter a word
she felt an uncontrollable gush coming from her box and she went
to look down but she couldn't see over her belly. She looked up
to Amir as his mouth dropped slightly too..
Amir Baby?
Lacy. I think my water just broke..
Leo. But you not due yet..
Lacy. Well tell the baby that..
Lacy looked at Amir as he took off his jacket and handed it to
her..
Amir. Here.. Wrap this around you. I dont want you getting
sick.. We gotta get you to the hospital..
Lacy nodded and wrapped his jacket around her then accepted his
help out of the door and into the car. Her mind began to race
with thoughts of the baby being healthy and okay, but it was all
cut short when she felt a sharp pain. She held her stomach in
the area of the pain and groaned as she gritted her teeth.
Lacy. Ahhhhhhh.
When it finally stopped she caught her breath.
Lacy. Oh shoot.... This might be it..

Amir quickly handed Leo the keys.
Amir. You know how to get to Ellis Hospital?
Leo. I'll figure that shit out, fam.
Amir helped Lacy into the back seat as Leo slid into the
driver's seat. Amir climbed in next to her and immediately
tended to her.
Lacy. Baby, it was just a contraction.
Amir. I don't care, I'm staying with you.
As collected as he seemed, Amir was scared out of his mind. An
early baby seemed like trouble to him, and all he could do was
come up with scenarios in his mind about how badly this was
going to end for them. He knew Lacy must have sensed it, because
her hand wrapped in his. He smiled and kissed her hand. Their
moment was disrupted at the sound of the horn honking.
Leo. Move, you fat bitch! My sister having her baby!
Amir. Don't get us killed, bro.
Leo. I'm just trying to get us there, bruh. How she doing?
Lacy groaned as another contraction hit, and she squeezed Amir's
hand tight. He soothed her, kissing her forehead and whispering
to her...
...Amir helped Lacy out of the backseat as Leo ran into the ER's
waiting room.
Leo. Yo, my sister is in labor! I need help!
A nurse rushed out with a wheelchair.
Leo. She ain't supposed to have it yet.
Nurse. Are you not full term, sweetie?
Lacy. -groaning- No.
Nurse. Okay, calm down. I can assure you that we're going to
help you. Are you the husband?
Amir. Yes.
Nurse. Follow me.
Amir followed them, coaching Lacy the entire time. They rushed
past the nurse's station and to a delivery room as Lacy hit
another contraction.
Amir. It's okay, baby. You're going to be okay.

Gabrielle held her daughter closer to her as a nurse frantically
rushed by with a pregnant woman. She glanced as they rounded the
corner, and the nurse at the nurse's station stood mouth agape.
Nurse. Oh, my God. All the stars are here today.
Gabrielle glanced at her.
Nurse. First you, then Lacy Winston.
Gabrielle. Excuse me?
Nurse. The governor's daughter. That's her that just passed.
Gabrielle put the pen down and immediately began walking to the
sound of the woman's yelling. She pushed the door open slightly
and gasped.
Gabrielle. Lacy?!
Lacy looked up.
Lacy. Gabby?!
Gabrielle. What are you doing here?!
Lacy. Having a baby.
They both laughed.
Gabrielle. I can see that, I mean why are you in JC?
Nurse. Ma'am, you have to leave. She's currently in labor.
Gabrielle. Sweetie, I'm going to sit right in the waiting room
for you, okay?
Gabrielle shuffled out, holding her baby with a smile on her
face at the sight of her little cousin, one of the only girls in
the Winston family.[/center]

Lacy held her stomach as she continued trying to breathe through
her contractions. When they finally got her room, they helped
her change and get into the bed.
Nurse. Since you're early, we're going to give you something to
try to slow down the contractions or at least make them easier
on you..
Lacy nodded and continued to rub her stomach with one hand while
she held Amir's hand with the other.
Nurse. Have you been to this hospital before?
Lacy shook her head.
Lacy. No...
She paused with her speech as another pain hit her and she
squeezed Amir's hand.
Amir. Uh. Dr. Barnes... Uhh. Cortney Barnes from Hamilton
Beach..
Nurse. Oh.. Okay. I'll go give them a call as well. I'll have
someone right in with the IV bags for you okay?
Amir and Lacy both nodded and Lacy looked up at him as he stood
over the bed as the nurse walked out of the room.
Amir. Can I get you anything?
Lacy took a deep breath and shook her head.
Lacy. No. I'm okay.. If the can make these things hit a little
less hard then I'll be doing better..
Just then another two nurse walked into the room.
Nurse2. Good evening.. Sounds like we're about to have a baby?
Nurse3. Someobody's making an early appearance..
Lacy. Yeah.. They're a little impatient I guess..
Nurse3. Well no worries honey. We're going to take care of
things.. Sierra is calling your doctor, and they should be here
shortly.. And in the mean time, we're gonna get you on this good
medicine and it'll help slow down these contractions. We're just
trying to buy a little more time..
The two nurses began to hook her up to monitors and iv bags.
Lacy looked up at the monitor for her heart then over at the
baby's monitor, and both of their hearts were pumping quickly.
Nurse2. Just try to breathe.. Take some deep breaths.. This is
terbutaline and it should help. Press this button if you need
anything okay?
Lacy nodded and the nurses walked out of the room...
... Moments later Lacy felt exhausted, and Dr. Barnes had just
left the room.. She wasn't having contractions anymore and she
was okay to have visitors. The only discomfort was her random
dull aches but the nurses had assured her that was nothing to
worry about.. She looked over at Amir and saw he was in deep
thought as he stared at the floor.
Lacy. Baby?
After a couple of seconds he snapped out of it and looked at
her.
Lacy. Are you okay?
Amir. I should be asking you that..
Lacy. I'm fine.. And so is the baby.. But what's on your mind?

Amir. We're really doing this, Lacy.
Amir held onto her hand with a smile.
Amir. We're moving. Having a baby. Starting a life together.
Like we always said we would.
Lacy kissed his hand and he smiled.
Lacy. Hopefully this baby won't give me any hell.
Amir. He won't. He loves his mama.
Lacy. Oh, you're certain it's a boy now?
Amir. My little soldier is going to be amazing. He's gon' be
healthy and happy with mommy and daddy.
He stood up.
Amir. I'm gonna let you rest, I'll go call our family. You want
anyone here?
Lacy. Everyone.
Amir paused.
Amir. Everyone?
Lacy. Yeah. Please?
Amir. I got you, baby. I'll send your brother in here.
He kissed her forehead and walked out into the hall where Leo
was pacing. He immediately stopped and looked at a smiling Amir.
Amir. She's okay, bro. You can go in and see her.
Leo rushed into the room and Amir began calling everyone to tell
them the news.[/center]

Lacy looked up as Leo crept into the room.
Leo. Are you okay?
Lacy. Yes.. I'm fine..
She smiled at him and he smiled back letting his worried face
fade away.
Leo. You had me nervous..
Lacy. Yeahh.. I know... I was nervous too.. -smirk- And Amir..
But everything is fine.. But the baby is tired of being cooped
up..
Leo. I guess he's ready to meet all the crazy people he been
hearing..
Lacy. You swear its a boy too..
Leo nodded and smiled.
Leo. I know it is.
Lacy shook her head.
Lacy. It probably is.. He's already giving me trouble...
Leo. At least he waited until you was just about due to put you
in the bed..
Lacy. Aint that the truth.. I prayed everyday that I'd have a
safe pregnancy.. -sigh- Now I just want a safe delivery..
Leo. You'll have one..
Lacy smiled at him as there was a knock on the door.

Samone walked into the room behind the nurse she was shadowing.
She paused when she locked eyes with the guy that was standing
near the bed, but she quickly broke eye contact and looked at
the patient as she laid in the bed.
Dominique. Hello hello.. How are you Miss Winston?
Lacy. I'm okay..
Dominique. Well. That's good I suppose..-smile- I'm Dominique,
and I'll be helping you through the night.. And this here is my
shadow for tonight..
Samone smiled and waved slightly at the woman in the bed and she
glanced at the man standing again.
Samone. I'm Samone..
Lacy. Nice to meet you two..
Dominique. We're partnering with the high school so students can
graduate with their LVN credentials, and Samone is getting some
extra hours hands on with me.
Lacy. Oh... Okay.. I bet that's a nice program..
Samone nodded.
Samone. It's okay I guess.. It'll give me something to do once I
graduate..
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. Well.. Please call me Lacy.. And that's my little brother
Leo..
Dominique. Nice to meet you two..
Samone. Yeah.. Nice to meet you..
Samone watched as Dominique looked over Lacy's charts and began
checking the IVs.
Samone. Can I get yall anything?

Leo stared directly at Samone, almost in a trance. Their voices
had turned into a muffled whine as he felt his palms get sweaty
as Lacy's voice faded back into his mind.
Lacy. Leo!
He snapped from his stare and looked at her.
Leo. Huh? Wassup?
Lacy. You okay?
Leo. Yeah, my bad.
Dominique. We'll be back shortly to check on you. Just rest and
call us if anything changes.
Dominique and Samone walked out of the room as Leo sat down,
looking at a laughing Lacy.
Lacy. You stare any harder that girl's gon have holes in her.
Leo. Lacy...that's the girl of my dreams.
Lacy. Now how in the world you figure that? You just met that
girl 5 minutes ago and you only know her name.
Leo. She's gorgeous--
Lacy. Looks aren't everything.
Leo. She obviously has a good heart, she's working with pregnant
women. Lacy--
Lacy. She's also 18 years old.
Leo paused and shrugged with a confused face.
Leo. That's 3 years younger than me, not 30.
Lacy. I don't know, Leo. Maybe you're onto something. We're in a
new city, you're going to need somebody to hang out with.
Leo. Exactly! You think I should ask her out?
Lacy. I think I'm more focused on having this baby than I am
your love life.
Leo. Mmcht. Hater.
Leo sat back with a smirk as his sister laughed. The door opened
and Amir walked in with a smile.
Amir. What's funny?
Lacy. Leo is in love with the student nurse.
Amir. The curly haired one? She's cute, bro. Go for yours.
Leo. Thank you, Amir.
Lacy. What'd they say, baby?
Amir. Everyone is on their way. Liam and Lamar...and
Lorenzo...and Laila...and Aida.
Leo paused, looking at Amir with a confused face.
Leo. How did my mom know Lacy was in labor?
Amir. She...uh...she was with your dad.
Leo felt his anger turn on in an instant, but he closed his eyes
and did the breathing exercises Chante had taught him.
Lacy. What were they doing together?
Amir. No idea.
Lacy. Leo? Are you okay?
He opened his eyes and nodded.
Leo. They were friends before everything went down. Maybe
they're just old friends reconnecting with each other. They're
both in Hamilton Beach for a while...
Leo sat back and began twiddling his thumbs.[/center]

Lacy glanced over at Leo and she could tell his mind was working
overtime.
Lacy. Leo.. It's going to be fine..
Leo nodded and stood up.
Leo. Im gonna run to the vending machine.. Yall want anything?
Lacy. Nope.. What I want isn't in the vending machine..
Amir. I'm good too bro..
Leo nodded and walked out of the room as Amir stood next to
Lacy's bed.
Lacy. I hope everyone is at least civil..
Amir. You don't think they would be?
Lacy. Well.. Scenes in public has never really been the family
thing, but after all this mess I feel like I can hardly say what
anyone would do now..
Amir smiled down at Lacy and brushed her hair back from her
forehead with his hand and then kissed it.
Amir. Well.. I'm not worried about them.. I'm worried about you
and this little one..
He rubbed her stomach and she smiled.
Lacy. It's so crazy to think we're about to be someones
parents.. -smile- I still get mixed up trying to give directions
sometimes, and I'm gonna be directing a little person.

Samone continued to walk next to Dominique and take notes.
Dominique. I seen that guy checking you out.. Lacy's brother

Samone hid her smile with the clipboard.
Samone. He was not..
Dominique. Yes he was... I glanced at him a few times.. And each
time his eyes were on you.
Samone. Maybe he thought I looked familiar or something.. There
could have been a lot of reasons for him to stare.. Sometimes I
catch myself staring at people on accident..
Dominique. I suppose.. I don't think so though.... But who are
we going to see next?
Samone. Umm. Ms. Frosten..
Dominique. Oh. Okay.. She's on a different floor, and she's a
which... She's much nicer if you bring a gift..
Dominique handed Samone a dollar.
Dominique. Can you go get her a canned diet coke? I don't have
time for her attitude tonight.. You know where the vending
machine is?
Samone nodded and began to walk off toward the vending machine.

Gabrielle looked up as two frantic men rushed into the waiting
room.
Lamar. Yo, my sister is here. She's in labor, we need to see
her.
Nurse. Sir, calm down. What's her name?
Lamar. Lacy Winston.
Gabby. What a surprise, I bring babygirl for a check up and the
entire family pops up.
Liam gasped.
Liam. Gab! What's up?!
Liam wrapped his arms around Gabrielle and she laughed, hugging
him.
Liam. We didn't know you were in Jorden City now.
Gabby. Fairly new transplant, hubby got traded to the team here.
Lamar. You seen Lacy?
Gabby. I peaked in there for a second but the nurses rushed me
out. How have you been?
Lamar sighed as Liam immediately sat with Gabrielle's daughter,
cooing with her.
Lamar. Life is life, I guess.
Gabby. You sound about like I did when I took off to the west
coast.
Lamar. I'm definitely beginning to see the appeal.
Gabby. That bad?
Lamar nodded.
Gabby. I'm sorry, cousin. Where's everyone else?
Lamar. My parents are probably on their way.
Gabby. Both of them?
Lamar. They ain't missing Lacy's first child. I don't care
what's going on. Leo should already be here.
Gabby. That must be the young guy I saw pacing the floor.
Lamar. Our baby brother...my dad's son with Aida.
Gabby paused with a shocked expression.
Gabby. Damn, I missed a lot.

Leo popped the top on his Sprite and took a sip, shaking his
head. He turned and immediately bumped into Samone, spilling
part of his soda on his hoodie.
Samone. I am so sorry!
Leo. It's okay.
Leo put the soda on the floor and stripped from his hoodie and
pausing when he realized it was Samone. He smiled, causing her
to smile back.
Leo. You okay?
Samone. Yeah, I'm good.
Leo nodded as Samone moved past him to the soda machine. He
began to walk off and paused.
Leo. You wanna go out sometime?
Samone turned and looked at him with a somewhat shocked face
before smiling.
Samone. Um...okay.
Leo. Cool...I don't know nothing bout Jorden City...
They chuckled.
Samone. Dinner and a movie?
Leo. Okay...yeah...cool...
Samone. My shift ends at 8 tonight. I'm sure you'll still be
here by then.
Leo. Probably...
Leo felt his hands get sweaty again and she pulled the Diet Coke
from the machine.
Samone. I'll see you later, Leo.
Leo. Okay, Samone.
He watched as she shuffled past him and he grinned like a kid in
a candy store, picking up his Sprite and taking off back towards
Lacy's room.[/center]

Lorenzo sighed as he pulled into a parking spot with his mind
racing. His babygirl was about to have a baby, and he was going
to actually get to be a grandfather.. With everything going on
within his family, he was excited to get a chance to be a better
grandfather than he was a father.
He walked into the hospital andhe was greeted by a nurse.
Nurse. Hello Governor.. How can I help you? Is everything okay?
Lorenzo. Yeah.. I'm looking for my daughter.. Lacy Winston..
She's supposed to be here in Labor?
Nurse. Oh yes.. Yall are all filing in.. She's on the 5th floor.
room 506..
Lorenzo smiled and nodded.
Lorenzo. Thank you..
He rushed to an elevator and pressed the 5th floor button.
??. Hold that elevator..
Lorenzo heard a voice from outside and decided to hold the doors
open for a little longer. To his surprise Laila rushed into the
elevator then the doors shut. They both looked at each other and
Laila pressed the button for the 5th floor..
Lorenzo. You're welcome..
Laila glanced his way then pressed the 5th floor again as if it
would speed up the elevator. Lorenzo shook his head and linked
his hands in front of him as the elevator went up. When the
doors finally opened Laila exited first and Lorenzo walked out
slowly behind her. She walked ahead to the waiting room, and he
could hear voices around the corner.
Laila. Liam... Lamar... How are you Gabby? Oh. This little one
is so precious..
Lorenzo glanced around the corner and saw Laila standing over
talking to Gabby while Liam and Lamar sat off to the side.
Lorenzo decided to press his luck too.
Lorenzo. Hey boys.. And Hey Gabby..
Gabrielle. Hey Unc..
Gabby went back to talking to Laila and Lamar glanced at Lorenzo
then turned his attention back to his phone while Liam spoke.
Liam. Hey pop..
Lorenzo. Im gonna go check on your sister..

Lacy sat up in the bed rubbing on her stomach as Amir spoke with
Gloria on speaker.
Gloria. I will be up there in just a moment.
Lacy. We'll wait on you..
Gloria. Yall better!
Lacy smiled.
Amir. Bye Ma..
They both hung up an Lacy smirked as the room door popped open
again with a slight knock.
Lorenzo. Hey babygirl.. Hey Amir..
Lacy. Hey daddy..
Lorenzo. How are you feeling?
Lorenzo walked closer to Lacy's bedside as his eyes bounced
between Lacy and Amir.
Lacy. Um. I'm okay... Just waiting.. If my contractions start
again then we'll get a baby sooner than later..
Lorenzo. Well.. Good. Your brothers and your mother are here
and I already need a cigarette so I'll be down stairs.. I'll be
back to check on you alright?
Lacy. You're smoking again?
Lorenzo nodded.
Lorenzo. Not for long.. But I'll be back alright?
Lacy nodded and Lorenzo walked out of the room again as Lacy
looked up at Amir.
Lacy. The building is still standing so maybe everything will be
okay..

Amir. They better. I'm not trying to literally have my baby be
brought into the world in the middle of chaos.
Lacy. What about your mom?
Amir. She'll play nice for me.
Amir pulled a chair up.
Amir. Damn, we're really bout to be parents. Some shit we used
