Aida sat in the coffeehouse with her nose buried in her phone.
She sipped her coffee and bit into her brownie with a sigh. It'd
been years since she set foot in Hamilton Beach, and part of her
was more than ready to leave. She didn't want to confront the
past that she'd left behind. Her phone vibrated in her hand and
she sighed before answering.
Aida. Yes?
Walter. Sweetie, you were gone when I got home.
Aida. I know. That was done by design.
Walter. Why? Did I do something?
Aida. Who is Melissa?
Silence.
Aida. Exactly. Listen, I just came back to see my brother, okay?
When I get home, I'm packing my things and leaving. For good
this time.
Aida hung up and sighed, rubbing her temples. The door opened
with a jingle from the bell and she looked up with a pause.
Barista. Hi, Lacy. Usual?
Lacy. Please? I'm so stressed the hell out.
Aida. Lacy Winston.
Aida stood up from her table and Lacy's eyes grew wide when she
seen her.
Lacy. Aida, oh my God!
They embraced each other tightly as Aida felt tears stinging her
eyes.
Aida. Niņa, look at you. You're glowing! Because you're
pregnant! Oh my God, you're pregnant!
Aida smiled and touched Lacy's full belly.
Aida. How have you been?!

Lacy smiled.
Lacy. I've been super pregnant... -laugh- But aside from that
I've been doing okay.. Just kinda rolling with the punches..
Aida. Oh yeah?
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. Yeah.. Life has been pretty crazy lately, and I'm just
trying to stay sane.. If I tell anyone I'm stressing they're
going to make me lay down for the rest of my pregnancy, and
that's just gonna stress me too..
Aida. Aww. Are you risky honey?
Lacy. Yeah.. But not risky risky..
Aida. Lacy.. Please. Join me.. I haven't seen you in ages..
You're an adult now..
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. Yeah. It has been a while.. Did you come back to see Leo?
Lacy watched as Aida paused with a face of confusion. By the
look she was getting she knew Aida didn't know and she knew she
had just messed up by spilling the beans.
Aida. You know about Leo? He's here?!
Lacy nodded as the waitress brought her tea to the table.
Lacy. You didn't know?
Aida. Heavens no..
Lacy. Im sorry. I'm sure he was going to tell you...
Aida. He's met Lorenzo I take it?
Lacy. Yeah.. He's staying with me and my fiance right now while
he tries to figure everything out.. You didn't tell him he had
siblings?
Aida. It was really complicated Lacy..
Lacy. Yeah.. I've been hearing that a lot lately..
Lacy sipped her tea again and looked at Aida.
Lacy. If you didn't come here to see Leo, what brought you back
to town?

/>sighed.
Aida. My brother, Miguel, is sick. Apparently, he's been sick
for a while. But, nobody wanted to tell me until recently.
Hopefully, I can help out.
Lacy. I'm so sorry to hear that.
Aida. I had no idea Leo made his way here.
Lacy. He didn't tell you anything?
Aida. We stopped talking before he went to prison. I said some
pretty hurtful things to him, so it would make sense that he
didn't want to tell me anything when he got released.
Aida smiled and grasped Lacy's hand.
Aida. Sweetie, it is so good to see you again, ugh. You grew up
to be just as beautiful as I knew you would. How's the family?
Lacy. Liam is going through a rough time. He and his
husband...it got messy.
Aida. Oh, no.
Lacy. Lamar finally came back from the Marines. He's setting
roots here in town.
Aida. That's fantastic to hear.
Lacy. My parents are separated...because of Leo and, I guess you
by proxy.
Aida sighed and shook her head.
Aida. Lacy, I would never want that to happen.
Lacy. Aida, I don't know what anyone would want anymore.
Everyone has so many secrets and I can't for the life of me
figure out why. It's like you all had an entire life outside of
everything that no one knew about.
Aida. I know. I know all of it is confusing. How the hell did I
manage to hide a pregnancy, your father and I having an affair,
me suddenly moving and leaving you kids behind. I'm here for a
little while, so I'm more than willing to answer any questions
you have from my perspective. You know me, Lacy. I'll be as
honest as I can be.
Aida sat up and cleared her throat.
Aida. Ask away.

Lacy nodded and sipped her tea..
Lacy. Did you love him?
Aida nodded.
Aida. Yes..
Lacy. Did he tell you he would leave my mom for you?
Aida sighed and nodded again.
Aida. He did..
Lacy. Why didn't he?
Aida. I don't know.. Im assuming the odds just weren't in favor
of it.. 3 to 1 you know..
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. Why didn't you guys tell us?
Aida. Lacy, I.. I loved yall.. And I knew our truth would hurt
you guys.. And I didn't want to be behind yalls unhappiness.
Lacy. Why didn't you come back?
Aida. Right when I was thinking about it. We were having
discussions.. Lorenzo was saying how he wanted us to be a
family... All of us.. And he was gonna tell Laila.. But instead
of Lorenzo showing up Laila did... And apparently he'd had a
change of heart.
Aida sighed.
Aida. She told me everything he was telling me.. And she ran it
down word for word.. She said it was all a lie. And he wasn't
going to leave her or you guys. And he didn't want to hear from
me or Leo again..
Lacy shook her head.
Lacy. That doesn't sound like daddy..
Aida. Well. His message came signed sealed and delivered by way
of your mother. And I had to accept it... So I did.. And I moved
on.. And
Lacy. He said you disappeared from him.. I remember. When I
first met Leo we went to the house and there was a huge ordeal.
He said he wasn't going to force you to talk to him. He said he
figured you had got tired of waiting for him...

Aida. Well, then, no disrespect but it seems as if your mother
is the common denominator.
Lacy. Aida...
Aida. I'm not saying anything further than that. I left my
memories of your parents a long time ago.
Lacy. You couldn't have expected him to actually leave
her...right?
Aida shrugged.
Aida. I knew your father to be a man of his word. What he said
he would do, he would. I found it suspicious that he'd been
telling me things himself and then the one thing he needed to
say to my face, she did it. But, like I said, I left it alone.
Lacy. I'm sorry that happened to you.
Aida. I'm sorry it happened to all of us. But, I never wanted
you kids involved. I knew at some point I would bring Leo back
here to meet his family and his father but...I didn't know the
right time. I knew you all long before politics got involved.
So, when they did, I just assumed he really was done with us.
-shrug- I moved on.
Lacy. What about now? Do you still love him?
Aida. No. I realized a long time ago that I loved the idea of
your father. His potential. What he could be capable of. But,
one thing I've learned the hard way about men is that you can't
bring something out of them that isn't there. As far as his
feelings for your mother, that's up to him to say. But, I know
he and I had something that one way or another got killed the
day your mother came to my doorstep.
Aida sipped her coffee again and sighed.
Aida. I can't stress it enough how badly I didn't want to hurt
you kids. Any of you. When I realized I was pregnant, I couldn't
just think about me anymore. I had to think about Leo too and
what would have been best for him. I can't say anyone was at
fault. I was an adult, and I knew what I was doing when I lied
down with Lorenzo. I knew the risks and consequences.
Lacy. You really loved him, didn't you?
Aida nodded with a blank stare at her.
Aida. I did. I would have died for Lorenzo and you kids.
Lacy. Is that why you slept with him in the first place? How the
hell did the affair even start?
Aida sat back with a thoughtful face.
Aida. Well...
...Aida walked into the home with a stack of mail, pausing at
the chaos that had turned into the living room.
Aida. Hello?
She asked, an echo bouncing off the walls. She shut the door and
stepped over broken glass before making her way through each
room, seeing the remnants of a fight.
Aida. Mr. Winston?! Mrs. Winston?!
She picked up a picture of the Winston children, confused.
Aida. What the hell happened?
Aida made her way up the stairs and into Mr. Winston's office,
slowly. He sat in the floor in front of his desk with a glass of
brandy in his hands.
Aida. Lorenzo, what the hell happened here? Where is everyone?
Lorenzo. Laila took the kids to her sister's house.
Aida. Okay...I'm assuming a fight happened.
Lorenzo. What was your first clue?
...Aida stopped the story at that moment, looking at a curious
Lacy.
Lacy. What did they fight about?
She paused.
Aida. I'm still not sure. I just know that in the heat of the
moment, Lorenzo and I started our affair.
She gave Lacy a reassuring look. She knew why the fight had
happened, but she knew it wasn't her place to break the news to
Lacy. It wasn't her place to tell her that her big brother was
only her half-brother...

Lacy shook her head and sighed as she rubbed her temples.
Lacy. This shit is crazy... And I'm so sick of the damn
secrets..
She felt her baby move in her stomach so she rubbed it and
sipped her tea.
Aida. Don't upset the baby...
Lacy. It's too late.. I need to talk to my mama...
Before she said another word, her phone rang and she sighed and
answered.
Lacy. Hey babe..
Amir. Hey.. What's wrong?
Lacy. I... -sigh- I saw an old friend today... I'll be home in a
bit to tell you about it.
Amir. Are you okay?
Lacy. I'm fine.. I'll be home in a little okay?
Amir. Okay.. I love you..
Lacy. Love you too..
Lacy hung up and looked over at Aida.
Lacy. I gotta go...
Aida. Here.. Let me see your phone..
Lacy handed her phone to Aida and watched as she programmed in
her number then handed her phone back..
Aida. Can you tell Leo to call me?
Lacy nodded.
Aida. And you call me too if you need anything.. I'll be here
for a while..
Lacy nodded again then picked up her tea to go. She walked out
of the cafe with more questions than she had answers for, and
she was determined to clear the air between her family so she
could bring her baby into a world surrounded by love.
After she checked in with Amir, he absolutely refused to let her
leave the house alone, so she found herself in the passenger
seat headed to her Aunt Lisa's house. After an hour and a half
Amir was pulling into a long driveway and she looked over at him
as he parked the car.
Amir. So you're really about to go ask your mom all this shit
about her and your dad?
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. Yeap... I just wanna know what happened and what they
argued about? It had to be big.. It started a snow ball of
mess..
Amir sighed and nodded.
Amir. Okay Lacy..

Laila sipped her tea in the kitchen as her sister, Lisa, walked
into the room to put her shoes on for work. Lisa looked at her
older sister and Laila sighed.
Laila. Eventually, Lisa.
Lisa. Laila, they've been calling for you.
Laila. I know. I just...I have to get my mind correct.
Lisa. It's been months now.
Laila. That boy was not supposed to be here. In any fashion.
Lisa. Neither was Lamar.
Laila cut her eyes at her sister.
Lisa. You can't get mad at him for wanting a relationship with
his son, Laila.
Laila. I can. Because I say I can.
Lisa. I love you, sister.
Lisa kissed Laila's cheek and grabbed her briefcase, headed for
the front door. A moment passed after Lisa opened the front
door.
Lisa. Laila, you have a visitor!
Laila, confused, sat her tea down and walked to the living room.
She paused in shock when she saw her very pregnant daughter
standing in the doorway. Tears immediately formed in her eyes.
Laila. Lacy...
Lacy. Hi, Mother.
Laila. Why are you way out here? And pregnant? What's going on?
Lacy. I came to ask you something.
Laila smiled.
Laila. You could have called me, Lacy.
Lacy. You aren't answering for anyone, and I need an answer.
Laila. Okay. Sit down.
The two sat on the couch and Laila looked at her daughter with
sincerity.
Lacy. Daddy and Aida had an affair. We all know that now because
of Leo. How did their affair start? What drove you and Daddy so
far apart that he wanted to sleep with somebody else.
A lump caught in Laila's throat. She sighed and rubbed her head.
She never thought she'd have to explain her past to her kids,
but her chickens had finally come home to roost.
Laila. We fought. Your daddy and I were fighting so much over so
many things that we were just about divorced. Then, one day,
your brother got hurt. He fell and hit his head, and had to have
surgery. When we went to the hospital, your daddy discovered
that he wasn't a blood match to Lamar.
Lacy's face sunk into sadness.
Laila. The day your father started his affair with Aida was the
day he found out Lamar wasn't his biological son.
Lacy. But--
Laila. Lacy, you're not naive. There's a reason you and Liam are
damn near twins, and Lamar isn't.
Lacy took deep breaths. Laila stood up and grabbed a bottle of
water from the kitchen, handing it to her. Lacy downed almost
the entire bottle before catching her breath.
Lacy. You cheated on Daddy?
Laila. I'm sure if you ask him, I did. 30 years ago, we were 20
years old and just meeting each other for the first time. My
cousin, Monica, brought me to this party with her and her
husband Marcus. I got introduced to Marcus' friends, including
your daddy, a guy named Xavier Woods, and another guy named
Charles Parker. I ended up with your daddy, but we had problems
from the very beginning. One night, after we'd both said we
needed a break, I got drunk and slept with Charles. We'd always
been attracted to each other, but we didn't want to disrespect
anything we had with our significant others, so we didn't act on
it until that night. Two weeks later, your father and I made up
with a lot of make up sex.
Lacy. Okay...
Laila. You asked...3 months later, I found out I was pregnant
and I just assumed it was Lorenzo's until Lamar turned 5 and hit
his head. We fought but, I was very pregnant with you, had two
kids to think about. So, I left to go live with grandma for a
while. That's when it all started for them.

Lacy sighed as she let all of what her mother told her process.
Lacy. You knew!
Laila looked a bit startled with Lacy raising her voice cause
that's not what she had normally done.
Lacy. You knew all of this shit and you never said a word!
Laila. I am still your mother Lacy Denise!
Lacy huffed slightly glanced down at the ground then another
thought popped in her mind and she continued again.
Lacy. And when Leo showed up you stormed out of the living room
like your hands were completely clean! -sigh- And daddy just let
you while he was left holding the bag.. I felt sorry for you!
But you did the same damn thing! And you've been lying about it
too!
Amir. Lacy...
Lacy looked at Amir who had appeared in the doorway. She stood
up from the couch quickly and felt a sharp pain shoot through
her pelvic area. She grabbed her stomach.
Lacy. Oh!
Amir rushed to her while Laila tried to help her too.
Laila. Lacy.
Lacy began to catch her breath while she relaxed a bit into
Amir. Amir held her looking confused and troubled.
Laila. Amir...
Amir. Laila... -looking at Lacy- I heard you yelling all the way
from the other room.. Are you okay?
Lacy sighed and rubbed the bottom part her stomach to ease the
pain.
Lacy. Im ready to go now.. -looks at Laila- There needs to be a
family meeting.. With no more secrets..
Amir took another look at Laila still confused as Lacy walked
past him without looking back. As soon as they exited the house,
her eyes began to burn with tears. Amir walked in front of her
to open the door, but he paused when he saw how red her face had
gotten.
Amir. Princess..
Lacy looked at him and tried to force a smile but her tears
began to flow freely from her eyes. Amir pulled her into a hug
as she cried in his chest as her words were muffled while she
spoke into his shirt.
Lacy. They're liars.. And the baby is going to be born into this
mess... And all these secrets...They have been lying literally
my entire life..
Amir held her and rubbed her back.
Amir. Just calm down baby.. Breathe.... You gotta calm down for
the baby..
Lacy nodded and did her best to sober up. She began to sniff and
huff then she finally looked back up at Amir. He used his thumb
to wipe off the tears left on her face while he continued to
hold her.
Amir. You alright now?
Lacy nodded and Amir kissed the top of her forehead before
helping her into the car. Majority of the ride Lacy was quiet
and staring out of the window as she rubbed her stomach. She
felt Amir's glances, but she didn't know what to say. Part of
her wanted to tell him how jacked up her family was, and part of
her wanted to tell him that she would fight tooth and nail to
not to end up like her parents, and part of her wanted to tell
him that 5 years from now when their baby has an accident and
needs blood that he'll be a match. All of which she was positive
he'd already known. She couldn't help but feel like her life was
a lie, and she could only imagine how her Buhbub would feel, but
the meeting had to be done.
