In front of her was a crying 18-year-old who drove drunk. Behind
her was an older woman who was rumored to have killed her
children. In the middle was Tiara LaShae Townsend, an
attitudinal young woman who was just ready to be done. She sat
down and looked around the court room, seeing her mother and
younger brother sitting in the gallery with her lawyer. She
waited as other inmates got called before the judge, had their
cases reviewed, and got told if they were getting released.
Soon, it was her turn. She walked to the podium as her lawyer
walked up, and the ADA stood on the opposing side.
Judge. Miss Townsend, you're before this court because you've
served 5 years of a 10 year sentence and, due to overcrowding
the Assistant District Attorney has recommended you be released.
I'll here from The People.
ADA. Your Honor, Miss Townsend has been reported to have been a
model inmate. She's received her GED and an Associate's degree,
she's led a women's therapy group, and has actively made amends
with her victims. It is the DA's decision to suspend the
remainder of her sentence, and she be released immediately.
The judge looked through files before nodding.
Judge. I am inclined to agree. Miss Townsend, you've learned
your lesson?
Tiara. I have.
Judge. Then, it is this court's decision to release you with a
suspended sentence.
The judge banged his gavel and Tiara's mother squealed with
excitement, wrapping her arms around her.
Mona. Oh, my baby is finally free!
Tiara smiled and hugged her.
Tiara. Dang, mama, chill a lil' bit.

Kemena rubbed her stomach as she stood in the middle of the
driveway with Bakari.
Bakari. What you think?
Kemena. The outside is cute.. And the neighborhood look quiet
enough..
She looked over as the realtor approached them.
Shelia. So what do you guys think?
Bakari. It's coo..
Kemena. I'm ready to see the inside of it..
Shelia. Well say no more..
After a few moments there were inside the house and Kemena's
eyes got big. She saw the all wood floors and the fireplace. It
was already updated and modern looking. She also liked how the
living room, dining room, and kitchen all flowed together. She
held her tongue as they continued through the house. They walked
upstairs and looked at the master bedroom and the bathroom and
they had his and her vanities and closets that connected to the
bedroom. They looked in two more rooms, and as she stood in the
room she'd envisioned as the nursery, she looked out the window
into the big backyard.
This house was everything she'd wanted when she thought about a
house. She sat down on the window seat as she stared out of the
window while Bakari and Shelia spoke, Kemena zoned out.
She began to think about she and Bakari raising their baby girl
and Jamal in happiness until Bakari walked over to her. She had
then realized Shelia had stepped out of the room.
Bakari. Sooo. What do you think?
Kemena looked up at him and smiled as he took a seat next to her
touching and rubbing her stomach.
Kemena. Honestly.. I love it.. But you sure? Money gon be kinda
tight and..
Bakari. Ion wanna hear that shit..
Kemena paused and looked at him.
Bakari. Do you want this house? Or do you want to look at
something else?
Kemena sighed slightly and looked back out at the backyard then
looked back at him..
Kemena. I want this house daddy... I love this house...
She let a smile creep across her face as she felt the baby move
in her stomach.

Tiara sat in the backseat of her mother's car as she turned into
their neighborhood. Her younger brother, Enrique, smiled at her
from the front seat.
Enrique. What are you going to do now that you're out?
Tiara. Iono yet.
Mona. I, for one, hope you don't go back to that boy.
Tiara shook her head
Tiara. I ain't thinking about Rock, mama.
Mona. Good. That boy ain't no good anyway. You got a degree, you
should be focused on building a life now. You're only 24, baby.
Tiara. I hear you, mama.
They pulled past a house where a white woman was putting a
'SOLD' sign on the realtor sign in the yard.
Enrique. I guess somebody's moving into the Whitaker house.
Mona. Good. That's a nice house.
They pulled into the driveway and Tiara jumped out, stretching
her hands high to the sky. She smiled at the passing clouds.
Mona. Come on, let's go speak.
Tiara. Ma--
Mona. Girl, it'll take five minutes. We have new neighbors, we
need to be courteous.
Tiara rolled her eyes with a smile and followed her excited
mother down the street. Enrique leaned over to her in a whisper.
Enrique. I missed you, T.
Tiara. I missed you, too. How's school?
Enrique. It's okay. All B's.
Tiara. We getting A's next semester?
Enrique. Yeah. I need your help this weekend.
Tiara. With?
Enrique. Shopping. I got a date with this boy next week and
ain't got nothing to wear.
Tiara. I got you.
She threw her arm around his neck and pulled him into a squeeze,
kissing the side of his head.
Mona. Helloooo!
Mona said with excitement dripping from her voice. Tiara shook
her head at her mother's volume as she and Enrique whispered
jokes to one another, making their way up the driveway.
Mona. These are my kids Enrique and Tiara.
Tiara looked up and paused.
Kemena. Tiara?!
Tiara. My bitch!
Tiara ran up the stairs two at a time and embraced her longtime
friend with a yell and a laugh.

Kemena hugged and rocked with one of her homegirl from way back
in the gap.
Kemena. Damn girl! I missed you!
Tiara. I missed you too!
The two pulled apart and Tiara looked at her belly.
Tiara. And you pokin! Oh shit!
Kemena. Yeap..
Kemena looked to her side as Bakari walked over to them after
finishing up a call.
Kemena. Baby! I want you to meet my ace from way back Tiara. TT.
This my baby fahvah and fiance and shit..
Tiara. Oh shit now.. -turns to Bakari- Nice to meet you.. I see
you been taking care of her..
Bakari nodded.
Bakari. She been takin care of me really..
Kemena smiled.
Kemena. Lil sum sum.. -smirk- Im glad they let yo ass out of the

Tiara. Girl, five long years and I ain't going back for nothing.
It's rough up in there. I thought you was in Hamilton Beach,
what you doing buying a house out here?!
Kemena. Me and babe decided we gon' start a life away from all
that drama, girl.
Tiara. I can't blame you.
Tiara watched as a car rolled by slowly. A car she would
recognize from 10 miles away. A chill ran down her spine and she
quickly shook off the feeling.
Kemena. You aite?
Tiara. I'm great now that my bitch living near me!
Kemena. What you gon' do now that you out?
Enrique chirped up with a smile.
Enrique. She got a business degree.
Kemena. Oh, word?
Tiara. It's just a lil Associate's. Some shit to keep me busy
while I was up in there.
Kemena. Use it, girl, start you a business. You know you was the
shit with nails back in the day.
Enrique. And clothes.
Tiara. Aite, aite. I hear y'all.
She laughed to herself.

Tiara. Ima see aite?
Kemena smiled.
Mona interrupted them.
Mona. Kemena Cardoza.. You know you was a bad influence on my
daughter.
Kemena looked at Tiara.
Kemena. I know I got her in some stuff... But she got me in some
stuff too mama..
Kemena smirked as did Mona. She shook her head.
Mona eventually walked over and hugged Kemena too.
Mona. It's good to see you.. I'm glad you're doing alright...
It's nice to meet you too young man..
Kemena watched as Bakari and Mona shook hands then he reached
out to hug her.
Bakari. It's nice to meet yall.. I'm Bakari..
Mona. I'm Mona.. Why don't yall come get some food?.. I got a
meal prepared for Tiara... And I know you hungry..
Kemena. I am!
They all laughed a bit.
Bakari. Yall go ahead.. Ima catch up..
Kemena nodded and began walking with Tiara, Mona, and Enrique.

Nate exhaled a bit of marijuana smoke as he pulled up to the
address he was given by a long time friend of the game. Once he
saw him standing in the driveway he pulled up and stopped. He
put his blunt in the ashtray and stepped out of his ride
smirking at the familiar neighborhood.
Nate. Hey young nigga..
He walked over to Bakari and slapped his hand as they pulled
each other in and gave a pat on the back. Once they released
Nate looked at the house.
Nate. This you?
Bakari nodded.
Bakari. Yeap. A lil sum for my girl.. Tryna make this family
thang work... She just gave the final okay today..
Nate. That's wassup.. Im proud of you man.. This a good
neighborhood for a family and shit.. I thought you said she was
here?
Bakari. Yeahh. She ended up knowing some neighbors down the
street.. C'mon..
Bakari and Nate began to walk down the sidewalk as they caught
up on each others lives..
Nate. I seen you on the news while I was in that box.. Im glad

Bakari. You know how shit go, though. I'm nervous.
Nate. Bout what?
Bakari sighed and shook his head as their pace slowed.
Bakari. Keep thinking I'm gon' fuck this thing up somehow. Shit
going so well. Bout to get my little boy up here for a lil while
and shit.
Nate. So, what's the problem?
Bakari. You know me, OG. I'm notorious for fuckin' shit up.
Nate. Gotta get outta that, man. If you waiting for the other
shoe to drop, you ain't ever gon' experience what's in front of
you.
Bakari cut his eyes at Nate.
Bakari. Jail make you a philosopher?
They laughed and playfully shoved each other as they walked up
the driveway. Bakari knocked on the door and entered after he
heard the welcome. They made their way to the kitchen where
Kemena was already digging into her plate.
Bakari. You wasn't gon' wait on me, bae?
He kissed her cheek as she shrugged with a smile.
Bakari. This my homie--
Tiara. Nate.
Bakari watched as Tiara and Nate stared at each other
momentarily. They quickly snapped from it when Mona walked into
the room.
Mona. Oh, Nathaniel! Look at you!
Bakari stepped aside as Mona embraced Nate's waist.

Nate hugged Mona back and smiled. He glanced at Tiara and she
was still staring at him..
When Nate was younger, his parents died and he went to live with
his grandmother. When his grandmother was diagnosed with cancer,
Mona became her caretaker for a while because she was the only
one who didn't mind caring for a teen as well as an aging woman.
Mona helped his grandmother back to health, and she also did her
best to guide him down the right path. Beside his grandmother,
Mona was the only other older person that could talk some sense
into him while he was growing up.
Once they released he smiled down at Mona.
Mona. What are you doing here?
Nate. Me and Bakari go way back..
Mona. Oh.. Okay.. Well I'm glad you're here.. Get yall some to
eat and take a plate to MissIda..
Nate. Yes ma'am..
Bakari. Yes ma'am..
Nate walked over to the sink to wash his hands, as he walked
past Enrique.
Enrique. Glad to see you around again..
Nate. Preciate it man.
They slapped hands and patted each other on the back. As he went
to wash his hands, he came face to face with Tiara.
Nate. Wassup youngin'?
Tiara. I'm grown..
Nate dried his hands with a paper towel and smirked.
Nate. Yo grown ass gon gimme a hug?

Tiara. I guess.
Tiara wrapped her arms around Nate's waist. He hugged her

Tiara. I just came home from prison.

Nate nodded.
Nate. They called it armed robbery..

Nate. What you gon do?
Tiara. Ion no yet...
Kemena cut in.
Kemena. She need to be opening her own salon or something..
Tiara. Girl..
Nate looked at Tiara.
Nate. Lemme know what you decide on.. I might could help..
Tiara. How would you help?
Nate. Iono.. Sum like a coming home gift..
Tiara smirked and Nate continued to look at her.
Tiara. Iono.. I'll let you know if I want your help..
Nate smirked at her.
After they all ate, they went to the backyard to sit and talk to
one another and get all caught up. They got to reminisce on the
old good times and the old bad times that they'd made it
through. Once Kemena and Bakari left out, Nate looked over at
Tiara.
Tiara. You remember what you used to tell me?
Nate. Na.. What?
Tiara. You always used to tell me I was too young..
Nate nodded..
Nate. You was..
Tiara. What about now? I'm still the same ol T.. But I'm both
grown now..
Nate smirked and licked his lips looking off then looking back
at her. Before he could properly respond he got a phone call
from one of his cleaners.
Nate. Hello?
Mike. Aye. It's some mexican nigga here looking for you..
Nate. What's his name?
Mike. What yo name man...?..... He said his name Hector..
Nate. Alright. Tell him I'll be there in a minute..
Nate hung up and stood up looking down at Tiara.
Nate. I gotta go..
Tiara kept a slight smirk on her face as she nodded at him.
Nate smirked a little bit too.
Nate. Call me if yall need sum..
Tiara nodded.
Tiara. I'll call you alright..
Nate smirked and shook his head walking back into the house. He
said his goodbyes to everyone else and drove off toward his dry
cleaners to talk to Hector while he was thinking about what
