Allison began packing up her office for the day. The sun was
beginning to set on Hamilton Beach, and she was more than ready
to pick up her son and relax with Disney movies and popcorn.
Just as she texted her babysitter to announce her departure from
work, she got a knock at the door. Without looking up, she
spoke.
Allison. Nope. I am done for the day. Any news that's breaking
can be handled by the 10 o'clock crew and the 5AM crew.
Amir. You be talking to these white folks like this?
Allison looked up and sighed. She hadn't spoken to her cousin in
months. In fact, he'd been actively avoiding speaking to her.
Now, here she was face to face with him.
Amir. You got a second to talk?
Allison. Of course. Have a seat.
The two sat down after Amir shut the door. Allison looked at him
apologetically.
Allison. Amir, I am so sorry. If I had known you were with Lacy,
I would have never...
Amir. It's fine, okay? I understand now that you had a job to
do.
Allison. If we hadn't broken the news before the big boys in
Atlanta, I would have gotten my ass chewed. Still...if I had
known you and her were engaged, I would have begged for another
anchor to handle that story.
A silence.
Allison. How is she?
Amir. She's coming around. Slowly, but surely.
Allison. What about the police?
Amir. They're still hounding me.
Allison. I mean...that cna't surprise you, right?
They looked at each other.
Allison. Jasen DuPont hits your fiance in public, on camera...a
month later he comes up missing?
Amir. I didn't have anything to do with that.
Allison. I know that, Amir. As angry as it made you, I know you
don't have a hurtful bone in your body.
Amir. Have you heard anything about it?
Allison sighed.
Allison. The rumor swirling now is that he took off. When the
police searched his house, it was in shambles. Clothes and
personal effects were all gone so, it's looking like he just
skipped town.
Amir. Good.
Allison leaned over and grabbed her cousin's hand.
Allison. Whatever happened, it'll come to the light. You'll be
cleared.
Amir. I hope so. I got a fuckin' wedding coming up.
Allison. It's going to be gorgeous, just like you two.
Charlotte rushed into the room.
Charlotte. Dennis Freeman's body was just found.
Allison. Really?!
Charlotte. They're saying his last known location was right here
in Hamilton Beach, and it's a homicide.
Charlotte walked out and Allison groaned.
Allison. I can never get the fuck outta here in time.
Amir. Get to it, superstar.
Allison. Remember what I said, Amir. It's all going to work out.
Amir. I know. Thank you.
Amir hugged Allison. She grabbed her suit jacket and began
preparing herself to go live on the air.

Amir pulled off King's Bridge and onto Hamilton Island. He drove
a ways until he got to an abandoned pharmacy. Discreetly, he
grabbed a bat from the trunk and made his way inside through a
side entrance. He unlocked the office door, his eyes landing on
a beaten Jasen. Jasen was stained with blood, breathing hard.
Amir. Tired yourself out with all that yelling?
Jasen. How long have I been here?
Amir. 'Bout two months now. But, I come bearing good news.
Jasen looked at Amir as he squatted to eye level with him.
Amir. As far as the police are concerned, your bitch ass skipped
town to run from a charge.
Jasen. I apologized, man.
Amir. Apologize all you want, Jasen. You hurt the woman I
love...that's like hurting me...and I don't let anyone hurt me.
Amir stood up and swung the bat, shattering Jasen's knee
repeatedly. It wasn't pretty, but Amir had always been the type
to take matters into his own hands. No matter the cost.
