The class was silent as the clock ticked. The professor was
sitting quietly at her desk while the students completed their
test, everyone except Miesha.
Miesha stared out of the window trying to sort through her own
problems, and the test in front of her was the least of them.
She had already completed it, and the only thing left was to
turn it in. Although she had the option to leave early upon its
completion, she chose to take the time to sit and think instead.
After all, she wasn't in a rush to leave because she knew
certain things.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the professors voice.
Prof. Alright you guys. Its 2:30 now. Pencils down… I'll come
around and collect the tests. Enjoy your weekend you all!
The students began to file out of the classroom as Professor
Pinkett picked up the papers. When she got around to Miesha, she
paused and looked at her as she looked out of the window.
Prof. You've been staring out that window for the last 20
minutes.. Are you okay? Do you need something, dear?
Miesha shook her head without looking up. She spoke in a soft
voice.
Miesha. No.. I'm fine.. Thank you..
That had seemed like her go to answer lately whenever anyone
asked. The professor nodded and picked up her paper, and then
she finished collecting the rest.
By the time she was done collecting, Miesha had gathered her
thoughts enough to gather her things. Just as she was about to
leave, her professor spoke to her again.
Prof. Miesha?... Take care of yourself alight?
She looked back and nodded before leaving the room. Once she
made it outside, she knew there would be no one waiting, but
even though it was expected, it still bothered her when she
looked around.
“He fuckin promised me!”
She sighed and began walking down the sidewalk to her normal
rest stop. She pulled out her phone to see no text message or
phone call from the actual person that had her car.
Trying to make the best of her late ride, she stopped at the
truck with the barbecue trailer that normally fed her and the
other students and stragglers.
Ronny. Hey there Mie-Tye
Miesha smiled lightly.
Ronny. Can I get you your usual?
Miesha. Yes please..
Ronny began to make her food as he made small talk.
Ronny. That boy late again huh?
Miesha let out a sigh and rolled her eyes.
Miesha. I don’t even wanna start in on that today… How you been?
Ronny went into detail about his business and his health as he
handed her the food. She tried to hand him money, but he
declined.
Ronny. Na.. it’s on the house.. You bout one of my regulars I
get to talk to… I appreciate that..
Miesha smiled and began to pick at her food while Ronny
continued to tend to his grill and fill her in on his family
members.
Ronny. Look. There goes another one of my regulars right there..
Miesha looked up as a car pulled up and a person got out. They
walked up and slapped hands with Ronny and greeted her as well.
??. How you doin?
Before Miesha could respond, Ronny spoke for her.
Ronny. She’s been better, I can tell you that..
Miesha’s mouth fell open slightly then she smirked and shook her
head.
Miesha. He ain’t lyin, but that ain’t his business to tell…
Ronny went back to workin the grill.
??. Well I think you too beautiful to be lettin anything get you
down ma.. I’m Tre, by the way..
Miesha looked up and nodded as if they was trying to run game.
Miesha. That’s nice of you, but I’m fine..
Ronny. Seem stranded to me…
Miesha’s mouth dropped again.
Miesha. Really Ronny?!
Part of her was embarrassed, and she had every reason to be. She
just wasn’t sure how things got like this for her, and she was
torn by what to do next, and it felt like Ronny was ready to
tell the whole world her business before she figured it out.

Tre. Stranded?
Ronny. Typical of that boy.
Tre watched as the girl's eyes scolded Ronny for continuing to
tell her business.
Tre. What dumb mufucka could possibly leave you stranded?
Ronny. Same thing I said.
??. Okay, Ronny, that's enough out of you.
Ronny. A'ite, Miesha.
Tre. Miesha, huh?
She forced a smile at Tre as he leaned against the wall of the
food truck.
Tre. So, let me guess. You love him, but he been late one too
many times. Not just picking you up from here, but a bunch of
other places.
Ronny. Battin' 1000, young blood.
Miesha. That's my cue to leave.
Tre. Relax, ma, I'm not picking at you. Really just running it
through my head.
Miesha. Running what through your head?
Tre. The idea that a nigga would leave a diamond on the
sidewalk.
Miesha gripped her food as she sized Tre up again.
Miesha. Why are you laying this on so thick?
Tre. I like what I see.
Tre shrugged casually as Ronny handed him his food.
Tre. I could take you where you want to go. I got some stops to
make, but ain't no trouble. I'm all over the city with it.
Unless you want to wait for ol' boy.

Miesha looked at him with a raised eyebrow. She normally wasn’t
the type to jump on the first guy that spoke to her, and she had
been faithful during her whole relationship, and for some reason
this felt like it would be opening a door she might not be able
to close..
Ronny. He good people Mie-Tye… Been knowin him bout as long as I
known you..
Miesha. Oh. So that’s why you so quick to tell my business?
Ronny. Hmph.. If you ain’t gon let him take you on, then I can
take you in a couple mo hours when I finish up..
Miesha sighed as she looked at her phone again. The text
messages she sent still hadn’t been delivered, so she pressed
the call button.
Miesha. He should be coming..
Just as soon as she put the phone up to her ear, she heard the
voicemail recording start. She frowned slightly and called the
number right back and the same thing happened..
Miesha looked at Ronny and Ronny gave a look of sincerity. She
sighed and looked at Tre who had a slight smile knowing he was
her best option at the moment.
Miesha. Look. Alright.. Y’all right.. Okay? I don’t know where
the fuck he is, and I am ready to leave..
Tre nodded.
Miesha. I’ll ride with you… But no funny stuff.
Tre smirked.
Tre. You ain’t got nothing to worry about sweetheart.. I swea..
Miesha. I guess..
Miesha looked at Ronny.
Miesha. If he pull up, just tell him I found a ride…
Ronny nodded as Miesha closed her food and stood up. Tre opened
the passenger door for her, and she slid in. She took in her
surroundings as Tre made it to the driver side. She could tell
he had put a lot of time into his car so she decided to comment.
Miesha. Your car is really nice… I can tell you put a lot into
it…

Tre. 'Preciate that. My daddy left it for me.
Miesha. Oh. Where is he?
Tre felt his heart skip a beat as he pulled from the parking
lot.
Tre. Let's just say he's not around anymore and leave that
there.
Miesha nodded. His father was a sore subject that he rarely
brought up and he knew if he got into it then he would get
emotional. The last thing he needed was to feel those emotions.
Miesha. What stops do you have to make?
Tre. I gotta go see family and head to the grocery store for
some stuff. I can drop you off first if you got something to do.
Miesha. Nah, it's okay. I don't mind.
Tre nodded as Miesha began bopping her head to the music. Tre
smiled.
Tre. You like that there?
Miesha. I do. It's nice.
Tre. That's my nigga K Dot.
Miesha. Oh, I think I've heard of him.
Tre. Yeah, his shit ride out.
Tre hit the highway.
Tre. So you in school, what you studying?
Miesha. Accounting.
Tre. A numbers girl, huh?
Miesha. I like knowing how it all works.
Tre. Smart.
Miesha. Did you go to school?
Tre snorted to himself.
Tre. Nah. Had an opportunity when I was in high school to get a
scholarship, but I let it go.
Miesha. Why?
Tre. Life get in the way, you feel me?
Miesha. What got in the way?
Tre looked at Miesha with a smile.
Tre. You sure you ain't trying to be a lawyer with all these
questions?
Miesha. I'm in the car with a total stranger. I got questions.
Tre laughed and rubbed his face.
Tre. I had a kid when I was 17. Had to hustle and make money for
'em.
Miesha. Well, that's commendable.
Tre. Yeah, that's what I thought.
Miesha glanced at him.
Tre. He got killed a couple years ago.
The air quickly got sucked out of the car as Tre began to take
an exit.
Miesha. Tre, I'm so sorry.
Tre. Don't be. It was my fault, I came to terms with it.
He pulled his car into a WalMart parking lot, eyes stinging with
tears that threatened to fall.

Miesha watched as his cool demeanor sank, and she realized it
was more to him, but his answers only gave her more questions.
She looked out of the window as she thought about what he said.
“It was my fault…” Even though she was curious, she could see
that this subject was still sore and she didn’t want to intrude.
As he parked the car, she caught him rubbing his eyes with his
thumb and his index finger out of the corner of her eye. When
she turned to face him completely he cleared his throat and
spoke before she could.
Tre. You comin in?
Miesha. Oh.. -smile- You not worried I’d take off in your car?
She said jokingly.
Tre. I wasn’t gon leave the keys..
Her mouth dropped slightly as he laughed.
Tre. I’m just playin.. It’s too hot for all that..
Miesha shook her head with a smile.
Miesha. Mhm.. I’m coming in though.. I could stand to pick up a
few things since we here..
… As they walked around the store, they continued to make small
talk. Miesha went on asking whatever came to her mind, and he
answered without hesitation. As they made it to the body wash
and shampoo, she began to look for her favorite fragrances and
brand when he spoke out.
Tre. You been askin me all these questions… I got one for you..
Miesha. Oh yeah? Shoot..
She said as she looked at the different selections.
Tre. What you doin with ol boy?
Miesha paused slightly before she picked her vegan lavender
scented body wash.
Miesha. I can’t even tell you.. -smirk- **** used to be
different, but then it just started changing little by little..
Now I’m gettin rides from strangers and he’s only God knows
where in MY car.
She sighed out of frustration and grabbed a thing of lavender
bubble bath as well. The night she had planned consisted of a
lot of cursing, some wine, a bubble bath and some of her
favorite men hating women singers.

Tre. He do this often, huh?
Miesha. More often than I would like for him to.
Tre nodded.
Tre. Love make you accept some crazy shit.
Miesha. Only for so long.
Tre. Shit, you ain't stopped yet. Why would he?
Miesha stopped in her tracks and looked at Tre.
Tre. I ain't saying you deserve it.
Miesha. Then what are you saying, Tre?
Tre sighed and stopped, picking his words carefully.
Tre. I'm saying if it's one thing I learned in these streets,
it's that people treat you how you let them treat you. If I
loaned a nigga money and kept giving him extensions on when to
pay it back, why would he pay me back at all?
Miesha. Where did you learn that little lesson?
Tre. Trial and error. And my big brother.
Tre began picking up groceries.
Miesha. What happened to him?
Tre. Take a wild guess.
Tre smirked at her.
Miesha. You've got a lot of pain in your life.

Miesha thought about what he’d said and she couldn’t help but
wonder why. She knew some people were just prone to hardships,
but she also knew life was what you made it.
Miesha. Well.. Maybe it’s time for change..
Tre looked over at her as the continued to walk.
Tre. -smirk- You think so?
Miesha nodded.
Miesha. Yeap. For the both of us really..
Miesha wasn’t one to believe in coincidence, but rather she
believed in God’s timing and universal will. That’s the way she
made sense of her life and it’s hardships.
Tre. Alright then.. Where we start?
Miesha. I think we already have… -smile- With our new
friendship.. Talking is always good therapy…
Tre. Damn. I’m friend-zoned already?!
He laughed as did she.
Miesha. Yeah.. Don’t get me wrong. You seem like a real decent
guy, I’m just not that girl..
Tre. What girl is that?
Miesha. The type to start something new before I close out the
old..
She sighed slightly realizing that her current relationship was
over. Truth be told, it was over long before today, but todays
events were beyond embarrassing and shameful for her, and the
fact that she still hadn’t heard from him while she’s in the
company of another man solidified it. She knew her life and
living situation was about to change because of it, and that’s
probably why she hasn’t broken it off sooner, but at this point
none of it mattered.
Miesha. My grandmother raised me, and she would always tell me
not to start a new chapter until the last one was closed.
Tre. Sounds like a wise woman..
Miesha. She was.. I lost her last year to cancer..
Tre. I’m sorry to hear that..
Miesha shook her head..
Miesha. Don’t be.. I’d rather her look down on me as an ancestor
than be here on earth in pain and suffering.. She lived a
beautiful life.. I do miss her though..
Tre. I understand that..
As the two continued to walk down the isle, Miesha’s phone began
to vibrate. She pulled it out expecting one person, but instead
‘C. Crystal’ flashed across the screen. She frowned slightly and
answered. Tre looked at her and they made eye contact as she
spoke.
Mie. Whats up cousin?
Crystal. Where you and Chad headed goin all fast and ****?
Mie. What?
Crystal. Where y’all goin? Or.. What you doin? Where you at?
Mie. Crystal… Where you see Chad at?
Crystal. Goin down 7th.. He definitely got some **** in the car…
****! That’s yo car!
Mie. Ima call you back..
Before Crystal could say anything else, Miesha hung up. She was
already over her situation, and this didn’t surprise her. In
some degree she was actually waiting for it. “I fuckin knew
it..” for a moment she forgot she was with Tre as she stopped in
the middle of the isle.
Mie. I fuckin knew it..
She snapped back when she heard him.
Tre. Knew what?
Miesha looked up at him.
Mie. Niggas ain’t ****… Well.. My ex nigga ain’t ****.. But we
already knew that right?
Miesha shook her head and let out a smile.
Mie. My cousin called to ask where I was headed with my guy.. I
mean my ex guy.. Since she seen him flying down 7th with a
broad..
Tre. Word?
Miesha nodded.
Tre. You don’t seem mad?
Mie. I was mad when you met me a couple hours ago.. Now I’m
just…-shrug- I don’t know.. But mad ain’t it..
Miesha looked back at her phone and began texting A. Monique.
Mie.:. I’m gon need to take you up on that offer now... I’m
done…
They continued to walk as she continued to talk.
Mie. Honestly, Spirit been tellin me I need to move around.. my
aunt offered me my old room at my grandmas house, and I been
getting offers for car loans and stuff..
Miesha shrugged.
Miesha. I’m just gon move on..

Tre. Just like that, huh?
Miesha glanced at Tre.
Miesha. I'm supposed to wait?
Tre. You can do whatever you feel is right. That's a long time
to just throw away, though.
Miesha. You saying I should stay?
Tre. Hell no. If the nigga ain't doing his job, got to get gone.
Cut that dead weight, you feel me?
Miesha. Let me guess, you got a story about that?
Tre laughed.
Tre. I got a story for everything, Miesha. I been through a lot.
More than a nigga should.
Tre quickly reflected over his life and shook his head.
Tre. Somehow, I'm still kicking.
Miesha. What happened in your last relationship?
Tre. Honestly, that ain't too dramatic. We just didn't work out.
She couldn't rock with my lifestyle.
Miesha. What lifestyle is that?
Tre. I'm a gangsta, girl. Yeen know?
Miesha laughed.
Miesha. I had a feeling. What exactly is it that you do?
Tre. Uh uh. Can't let you in like that.
Miesha's jaw dropped slightly.
Miesha. This where you stop being honest?
Tre. That ain't it. I'm being honest in not letting you in.
Miesha. Why?
Tre. Plausible deniability. If you ever get caught with me, you
won't be hemmed up.
Miesha. What you mean?
Tre. They can't charge you with shit. They can't use shit
against you if you don't know shit to begin with.
They fell into a comfortable silence momentarily before Tre
spoke again.
Tre. Put it to you like this, I'm on borrowed time in this
lifetime. The last thing I want to do is bring somebody down
with me. Especially somebody like you.
Miesha. Meaning?
Tre. Meaning you got shit going on. You got shit to live for.
Miesha. And you don't?
Tre. Nah. Not in this chapter.
Tre smiled over at her as they made their way to the checkout
line.

Miesha nodded.
Miesha. Keep living.. Maybe it’s in the next..
Tre looked over at her and smirked..
… After they finished checking out, and made it to the car, he
pulled out and began to drive out of the parking lot. She looked
over at him.
Miesha. You didn’t have to pay for my stuff..
Tre. Yeah.. You already said that.. -smirk- It’s coo though.. It
was just some bath stuff and some wine..
Miesha. Yeahh. I got my candles at home.. I just want to relax
tonight..
Tre. And you deserve to..
Miesha looked over at him with a smile. He glanced at her then
he turned into a gas station.
Tre. You want something out of here?
Miesha. Ummm. Just a water..
Tre. Bet..
Tre got out of the car, Miesha looked down at her phone. She had
finally been able to put her situation on the back burner. She
lifted her head when she heard a familiar voice.
Chad. You play too much girl..
Her blood began to boil instantly as she watched her newly
deemed ex guy putting the gas pump in her car. She could see
someone in the passenger seat, just like Crystal said. “Oh. He
got me **** up!”
Before she knew it she had gotten out of the passenger seat.
Miesha. RaChad muthafuckin Denison! I KNOW you lyin!
Chad looked up like he had seen a ghost,
Chad. Miesha! What you doin here?!
Miesha. What are YOU doin here?! With her?!
Miesha pointed to the girl as she got out of the car,
??. Excuse you?
Miesha didn’t even waste time on speaking to the girl since she
knew he probably lies about his relationship status.
Miesha. And in MY car!
Chad. It ain’t even like that! You trippin..
Miesha. Well who is she then?!
Chad. That’s my sister!
??. No the **** I’m not! Siblings don’t do what we do baby girl…
Miesha. How long you been fuckin her?!
??. Who the **** are you?!
Before anything else could be said, she felt a strong and gentle
hand on the small of her back.
Tre. You alright?
In that moment, she calmed down and found a smile again.
Miesha. Meet my ex, his new ****, and MY car..
Chad. I gave you the money for this car! It’s ours.
Miesha. No. You gave me half the down payment and I been paying
the note without ANY FUCKIN HELP! The insurance too! Don’t play
with me RaChad!

Chad. Ain't nobody playing with you, Miesha!
Tre. Lower your tone, my guy, it ain't gotta be all that.
Chad. Who the fuck is you, bro?!
Tre slide his car keys into Miesha's pocket with a swift motion
as he positioned himself in front of her.
Tre. This her car, bro?
Chad. This don't concern you, man.
Tre. She with me so you talking to her mean you talking to me
and I don't just let niggas disrespect me.
Chad. Oh, this yo' new man?!
Tre. This her new friend.
Tre looked at the girl. He recognized her from a few encounters,
and her face froze when she caught his gaze. He nodded his head
and the girl got out of the car without a fight.
Chad. What the fuck you doing?!
??. I ain't fuckin with Trigga.
Chad. Who?!
Before Chad could get another word out, Tre gripped his head and
violently slammed it against the trunk of the car. Chad crumpled
to the ground with a hand over his jaw.
Chad. The fuck?!
Tre took the keys from Chad's pocket and stood up. Chad rose to
protest but Tre stood over him firmly, eyes beaming into his.
Chad scooted back on the pavement and Tre walked to Miesha.
Tre. Drive my car and follow me, aite?
Chad. Nigga, you can't just--!
Tre moved his hand to the back of his waist, glaring at Chad
again. Once Chad deciphered the move, his silence overtook the
conversation. Without another word, Tre slid into the driver's
seat of Miesha's car, started it up, and pulled away from the
gas station. In the rear view, he saw Miesha pulling out in his
car, and Chad and is girl arguing by the now vacant gas pump...
...Tre pulled over in a quiet neighborhood after a 10 minute
drive and parked the car. Miesha soon pulled in behind him. He
got out and smiled as she shook her head.
Miesha. Are you crazy?
Tre. I wasn't gon' let that nigga keep yo car, Miesha.
Miesha looked around the nieghborhood.
Miesha. Where are we?
Tre. My granny house. Pop the trunk.
Tre walked around the back of the car and began unloading the
groceries he'd bought.
