Justice pushed the door open, and it creaked loudly before
thudding against the wall. He shuddered at the sight. Slowly, he
walked in. His heels clicked on the floor. He swiped a finger
across a table and shuddered at the sight of the caked up dust.
Quickly, he wiped his hands.
Justice. I know damn well--
Before he could get it out, a loud boom came from the back
followed by expletives. Justice slide his hand in his handbag,
cradling his blade as heavy footsteps came down the hall. He was
soon greeted with the sight of a kid, no more than 21 years old.
The kid stopped and looked at him.
??. Fuck is you, bruh?
Justice. I think a better question is who the fuck is you?
??. I'm the DJ up in here, DJ GetRite.
Justice's hand slipped out of his bag and he shook his head.
Justice. Oh.
??. If you lookin' for the owner--
Justice. Unfortunately, I am the owner.
He extended his hand.
Justice. Justice DuPont.
DJ GetRite sized Justice up before chuckling.
GetRite. Wait, hol' up. You? Uncle Mack said he was leaving the
club to his nephew in the entertainment business.
Justice. Again, me.
GetRite. But, you--
Justice. Are exactly who I say I am. My Uncle Mack was never
really one to understand anything outside of tiddies and Patron.
I am...was...a performer up north.
He sighed and looked around.
Justice. Apparently lying went through his veins. His ass told
me he had the best night club in New Chartres.
GetRite. Yeah, like 10 years ago. Last time Masquerade was
poppin' was Obama's first inauguration. He left it to you, huh?
Justice. Unfortunately.

Carlos sighed as he backed his car into his normal parking spot
at the family bar. His head was filled with thoughts of
everything from his father’s passing to the way everyone reacted
to it and other troubles that had found him prior.
His thoughts were grounded when he heard a tiny voice shouting
over his loud music.
Ari. DADDDYYY!! DADD-
He cut the music down quickly then turned around to tend to her.
Carlos. Wassup babygirl?
Ari. What we doin here? You said grandpa wouldn’t even be here
no more..
Carlos. We still gotta check on the place.. He said he wanted us
to watch over it.. Alright?
He waited for her as she paused for a moment to think about her
next question.
Ari. Are you gonna make the wings now?
Carlos sighed and smiled at her.
Carlos. I’ll make them just for you, alright?
Ari smiled and nodded. With her agreement he turned off the car,
and helped her out. Holding hands, he lead her into the club. He
paused for a moment when he realized DJ wasn’t alone. All eyes
fell on them and he let out another smile realizing his cousin
had made it to town.
Ari. Daddy.. Who’s that?
Carlos. Remember I be tellin you about my crazy Cousin Jay...
Justice. You the crazy one fool..
Carlos smirked and picked up Ari as he approached his cousin and
his brother-in-law.
Carlos. It’s good to see you too.. Say hi to Cousin Jay,
babygirl..
Ari. Hey Cousin Jay.. My name Ari..
Carlos kissed her head before he looked back at Justice. It had
been years since he had seen his cousin, and even longer since
he’d seen his cousin in the city limits.
Carlos. How you been nigga?

Justice. Why you talking to me like I'm a common nigga?
Carlos chuckled as Justice dusted a stool before sitting down,
shrugging his shoulders.
Justice. I'm here, I guess. Can't believe Uncle Mack really
gone. I didn't know he was that bad, 'Los.
Carlos. It happened real fast, fareal. Like one day he
just...wasn't good.
Justice watched as Carlos' eyes glossed over. It was quick.
Carlos shook the tears that were forming and sighed.
Justice. You know you ain't got to be strong with me, Carlos.
Carlos looked at Ari and smiled.
Carlos. Go see what GetRite doing, baby.
Ari ran off towards the back of the club as Carlos reached over
the bar's counter and grabbed a bottle of tequila. The subject
changed.
Carlos. You talked to Auntie?
Justice. You know I ain't spoke to nobody but you and Mack since
Granmuva died.
Carlos. You ain't make it easy. You left two days after we put
her in the ground.
Justice. What was I gon' stick around for, Carlos?
Carlos downed his shot and sized Justice up.
Carlos. She ask 'bout you.
Justice. Has her f*ggot son passed, I'm sure.
Carlos. I think she better now, J.
Justice rolled his eyes at the thought of his mother and their
last conversation...
...Justice walked into the house with tears in his eyes. 10
years ago, New Chartres was an entirely different city, and
18-year-old Justice was an entirely different man.
Justice. 'Los! Uncle Mack!
Justice stood in the living room as his uncle Mack and Carlos
shuffled from the kitchen, both fighting tears.
Justice. Where she at? Where granmuva?
Carlos. Justice--
Justice. She upstairs, right?
Mack. Justice, sit down.
Justice. I ain't sitting down until somebody tell me where
Granmuva Pearl at!
Justice already knew what'd happened, but he needed to hear it.
He wouldn't believe his biggest supporter was gone until he
heard the words come from somebody's mouth. Before anybody could
respond, another person walked from the kitchen. Justice's eyes
landed on his mother, Frederica, as she scowled at him.
Frederica. Get out of here.
Justice. Mama, I'm not bout to do this with you. Not tonight,
okay?
Frederica. You take your fruity behind on out my house, boy!
Mack. Hol' up, Freddie, this my house too. Justice family just
like everybody else.
Frederica. He ain't no family of mine, Mack, I ain't raise no
punks.
Justice. You ain't raise me anyway, Freddie! Granmuva raised me!
You was too busy chasing rocks to take care of any of your kids!
Frederica. Watch your mouth.
Justice. I ain't trying to hear you tonight, okay?
Justice turned to Carlos, the only other person he was close to.
Justice. What happened, Carlos? What happened to Pearl?
Carlos. It got her, J. Her diabetes got worse and worse, she
tol' her doctors she wasn't taking no mo' medicine.
Justice felt cold tears stream down his face. He went to cry,
but his voice got caught in his throat.
Frederica. Now you wanna cry like you been around.
Mack. Freddie--
Justice. You know what, mama? You got it.
Justice turned on his heels, staring at his mother.
Justice. You can't accept me, you never been able to, and I'ma
have to accept that. Regardless, the one thing that held us
together was Granmuva. Since she not here...I ain't got no
reason to be here now.
Carlos. Justice, calm down...
Justice. Ain't no more calm, 'Los. I'm sick of her disrespecting
me like I ain't her child.
Justice got in Frederica's face.
Justice. After Granmuva's funeral, I'm moving to Liberty City,
ma. I'm gon live like I want to. For all I care, you can tell
your lil' fake ass church members I died...cause I'll damn sure
tell the world that's what you did.
Justice wiped tears from his face and stormed away, snatching
his arm from Carlos' attempt to stop him...
...As promised, Justice moved right after Pearl was buried, and
he didn't communicate with anyone for his first two years away.
Justice shook his head and accepted the shot Carlos had poured
him.
Justice. Fuck Freddie.
He sighed and looked around.
Justice. What the fuck happened to Masquerade? Uncle Mack used
to have this place poppin'.

Carlos shook his head as he thought about how Masquerade’s last
night went. He looked over at Justice then looked back at the
empty club.
Carlos. Man. Cuz that shit was so fucked up..
Carlos walked through the club as DJ GetRite played mixes and
Bankz twirled on the pole. The lights flashed across the club,
and he could see clean through it. There was only a handful of
people there and they were all regulars, and even some of the
regulars began to fade off. By the looks of things, he knew the
club wouldn’t last much longer.
He stopped over at the bar and spoke to Indi, their last
standing bartender.
Carlos. What’s poppin?
Indi. Shit.. How yo pops doin?
Carlos. He coo.. He gon be alright.. That nigga gon out live
everybody..
Carlos let out a slight laugh trying to keep the mood light and
his mind off of his dad in a hospital bed.
Indi. You want a double tonight..
Carlos. You know me..
Indi gave him a smirk and touched his hand before turning to get
his drink. Just as his thoughts began to wonder his phone
vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out caught the message
preview.
Sonya.:. We have a date. 4 weeks from tomorrow at 2pm. Your
presence is REQUIRED. Understand that I can’t reschedule this
anymore.
He looked up from his phone to see Indi in front of him again
with his drink. She slid it to him, and almost automatically he
picked it up and downed it.
Carlos. One more..
He slid the glass back to her, and she smirked and turned to get
the bottle. As she refilled his glass, she began to speak.
Indi. Oh yeah..That lil $5 ass check didn’t hit yesterday or
today, and you know our arrangement so I’m not trippin on it but
I just wanted to let you know..
Carlos raised his eye brow, then shook his head.
Carlos. Let me know much it’s supposed to be. I’ll get it to you
before you walk out of here.. Alright?
Indi. Okay..
Carlos. Let me go find Rita.. Her ass supposed to be on top of
this..
Indi. I think she quit...
Carlos looked at Indi, and before he could get anything else out
everything went black and the music cut abruptly.
Carlos. The fuck?!
Immediately after those words lefts his lips the was a scream
then a loud bang to the floor and then crying...
Carlos sighed and wiped his face.
Carlos. One of the bitches busted her face when she fell after
the lights went out. I been tryna juggle that shit.. she got
kids and shit. I got the lights and shit back on but I don’t
know about the rest of this shit...
Carlos looked over at Justice
Carlos. Glad yo ass the new owner to this muthafucka...

Brianna parked her car in the Masquerade parking lot as the
voice rang out over her speaker phone.
??. Miss Jordan, I'm sorry. No one by the name Phalicia has been
admitted to this hospital. Have you tried the other area
hospitals.
She sighed.
Bri. Yeah, I have. Thank you anyway.
She hung up before resting her head on the steering wheel. She
took deep breaths, and her eyes finally settled on the cars in
the parking lot. She recognized Carlos' and DJ GetRite's, but
not the third car that sat closest to the door. She got out of
the car and made her way inside the club, where she saw Carlos
at the bar. He looked up and grinned at her.
Carlos. Wassup, Boogie?
Bri. Hey. Am I interruptin'?
Carlos. Nah, this the perfect time, actually. This my cousin
Justice, Uncle Mack left the club to him. J, this Brianna, one
of the girls. We call her Boogie.
Bri. Nice to meet you.
Justice. Damn, you're pretty. If I didn't like dick so much, I'd
have to give you a little run.
Brianna laughed.
Bri. I was actually coming to see what's going on with the club.
Justice. We were just talking about that, but it'll be good to
get your input too since you work here. Is it worth saving?
Bri. I mean, it definitely needs some work. Carlos been trying
to turn it around for Uncle Mack, but he could only do so much.
Uncle Mack was stubborn.
Carlos. Fasho.

Justice watched as Carlos puffed his cigar. He and Brianna were
actively avoiding making eye contact, both of them trying to
stifle a smile.
Justice. I definitely don't want y'all out on the street with
nowhere to go. But, it's gon' take some work getting this club
ready to reopen. Work...and money.
Carlos. Which ain't exactly easy to come by.
Bri. I can probably get some of the girls to pitch in. We ain't
been working, though, so we all kinda low on cash.
Carlos. Don't worry bout it, BJ. We got it.
Again, they both cracked a smile at each other before looking in
opposite directions.
Bri. Where my girl at?!
Carlos. In the back.
Bri. I'ma go say hey to her.
Brianna walked off and Justice cracked a smile at Carlos. He
rolled his eyes playfully.
Carlos. Don't start, J.
Justice. Look at you trying to be all cute. Let me find out you
got a lil' crush.
Carlos. Shut yo' ass up.
Justice. It's cute, 'Los. She seem like a sweet girl.
Carlos glanced in the direction Brianna went.
Carlos. She is.
Justice let his statement linger before shaking his head.
Justice. Look, just from first look, ain't no way this building
up to code. I know Uncle Mack had his ways, but if we gon' do
this, we gotta do it right.
Carlos. We?
Justice. You family. This just as much your club as it is mine.
I want you to partner with me.

Carlos raised his eye brow and let out a slight laugh
before puffing his cigar.
Carlos. Really nigga?
Justice. I didn’t stutter boy. I know you heard me.. Yeah
really.
For as long as he could remember, he had told his daddy that he
didn’t want anything to do with the club, but over the years his
perspective changed internally. He thought about it for a few
more moments then nodded.
Carlos. We partners then..
Carlos smiled as Justice let out a smirk shaking his head.
Justice. Good. Cause I don’t know what in the hell kinda miracle
this place is gon need.
Carlos nodded and looked around again.
Carlos. I got a few bands tucked away for some shit I ain’t gon
do no more. It ain’t a lot but it’s a start for some shit..
Justice looked over at Carlos but Carlos continued his gaze at
the club..
Justice. You got bands?
Carlos. A nigga do work around this muthafucka..
Justice. Doin what?!
Carlos. Doin what I do nigga...
Carlos cut his eyes at Justice as Justice cocked his eye brow.
Justice. Don’t get fucked up..
Carlos. Na.. But check this out.. -sigh- I got some shit to take
care of next week so I might not be around for a lil bit..
Justice. What you do?
Carlos puffed his cigar again, and before he was able to get a
response out Boogie and Ari were walking from the back.
Ari. DADDY! DADDY! Can BJ come to your house so I can show her
my toys.. She showed me hers..
Ari held out a small teddy bear for him to see.
Bri. I’m sure your daddy is really too busy for that..
Bri looked down at Ari then at Carlos. They looked at each other
for a moment and she smirked as he smiled looking off.
Carlos. I can make time.. If you ever just wanna stop by..

Before she could respond, the door opened again. Carlos let out
a low sigh as the pretty woman's face screwed in confusion.
Ari. Hey, mommy.
Meisha. Hey, babygirl. You ready to come with me?
Ari. I have to go get my backpack.
Ari let go of Bri's hand and ran toward the back as Meisha made
her way closer to the trio.
Meisha. Really, Carlos? This what we doing now? You just lettin'
my daughter chill with any old chick?
Bri chuckled. Whoever this was, she wasn't the first woman to
approach her.
Bri. Look, you misunderstood that. I'm Brianna.
Meisha. Girl, I don't care who you are. [to Carlos] Why you got
my daughter around her?
Carlos. Chill out, yo.
Meisha. This who you fuckin' now?
Bri put on a smile, but her frustration was growing.
Bri. I can assure you, I haven't touched Carlos. We're just
friends.
Meisha. I don't remember talking to you!
Bri's smile faded almost immediately at Meisha's tone.
Bri. You're talking about me. That's more than enough reason for
me to address you.
Carlos. Boogie--
Bri. I don't know what all this is, and sweetheart, I'm not one
for petty drama. So, I'll say it to you one time and one time
only.
Bri took a couple of steps forward, glaring at Meisha in her
eyes.
Bri. If you address me like a bitch on the street again, I'll be
sure to drag you just like the bitch you think I am. Are we
clear?
Meisha. Girl, ain't nobody--
Bri. I said are we clear?!
There was a tense silence between the two women until Ari's
bright laughter tore through the room. She ran in with her
backpack and immediately hugged Carlos. He picked her up,
tickling her while he enveloped her.
Carlos. Daddy gon' walk you and mommy out. Come on, Meisha.
Ari reached for Bri. She plastered on her bright smile again,
pulling her from Carlos' arms and held her tightly.
Bri. Be really sweet for your mommy, okay, friend?

Before Ari could respond Meisha yelled at Carlos.
Meisha. REALLY Carlos?!
Carlos ignored her for the moment to keep as much peace as he
could.
Carlos. C’mon Ari.. Let’s get you outta here.. Alright?
As Ari made her transfer between arms, he could feel Meisha
fuming behind him.
Meisha. Gimme my baby!
Ari hugged Carlos’ neck and laid her head on his as if she
didn’t want to go anymore. Meisha reached her hands out and
Carlos pushed them away.
Carlos. Man you trippin.. I’m finna take her to the car. Come
on..
He walked past Meisha and sighed quietly as he rubbed Ari’s back
trying to comfort her.
Once they made it outside Meisha began to yell at him again.
Meisha. You got my baby playin with all these random ass hoes!
Got her thinking she my baby friend! Bitch ain’t no friend of my
baby’s Carlos! I don’t know what the fuck you....
He tuned her out as he spoke to Ari while buckling her in.
Carlos. Ima see you tomorrow daycare alright? Ima pick you up..
Ari nodded, but he could see the tears forming in her eyes. He
sighed and kissed her forehead. He hated sharing her with
Meisha, but he knew he wasn’t in the best position to give her
around the clock care that she needed. He also knew Meisha would
fight him for custody.
Carlos. Daddy love you..
Ari. -mumble- I love you too daddy....
He kissed her head again before he shut the door and looked back
at Meisha who was now just staring at him.
Carlos. What?
Meisha. You know what! You and yo lil bitch in there got me
fucked up.. And you bet not be tryna turn my daughter against
me!
Carlos. Mannn. What the fuck you even talkin about? I ain’t
fuckin around with that girl... And even if I was it still
wouldn’t have shit to do with you.
Meisha. Don’t be acting like I ain’t nothing to you Carlos...
Carlos. You my baby mama.... Just like you that other nigga baby
mama too..
He watched as her face shattered with sickness from being
brought back to reality.
Meisha. So.. That’s it? You really gon just throw us away like
that? After everything we been through? You know you still love
me... I know you do..
Carlos sighed.
Carlos. I ain’t finna do this shit with you man. You trippin
when you already know what it is... I’ll holla at you.. Alright?
He turned around and listened to Meisha huff as he made his way
to the door. He heard her car door open as he opened the club
door.
Meisha. You know what?! Fuck you Carlos! And you better have my
fuckin money Friday too or I swear I’m gon file them papers on
yo ass! And I bet you won’t see her again! I’m not playin..
He let the doors close as he watched DJ GetRite, Justice, and
Boogie stand in a circle staring at him.
Justice. So that’s that baby’s mama?
Carlos nodded as he let her threats play through his head. Then
he looked at GetRite.
Carlos. You better talk some sense into yo sister cause I’m not
gon play with her about my daughter..
GetRite. You know she just be talkin shit... But uhh.. We gon
call a staff meeting or some shit?
Carlos looked at Justice then made his way around the bar to fix
himself a drink while they figured it out.

Justice. Yeah, I guess. I don't know nobody up in here. How many
girls we got?
Bri. 10, well...9. Cherokee having a baby.
Justice. 9?!
Carlos. That ain't enough?
Justice. Hell no that ain't enough, If you got the main stage
with three girls, a floor with at least 10 tables, and a few VIP
rooms? We need at least 15.
GetRite. We can't exactly hold auditions for no strippers.
The room fell silent as Justice looked at him.
Justice. Why we can't? One thing I know 'bout New Chartres is
that folks love shakin' some ass. Who wouldn't want to shake
something for some money?
Carlos. You know the hood bitches gon' want to.
Justice. Tell you what, Brianna and GetRite, y'all get everybody
here. Dancers, bartenders, bouncers. Whoever is on payroll. Tell
em they got two hours or their job is going to somebody else.
Boogie and GetRite walked off, pulling their phones out as
Carlos slid another glass to Justice. He took the shot and
sighed.
Justice. I hope this shit work.
Carlos. You and me both.
...Two hours had passed, and Justice was sitting in the back
office with a blunt in his hand. He stared down at the mess of
paperwork Uncle Mack left him with frustration. Then, there was
a knock on the door.
Justice. Yeah...
The door popped open and Bri ducked her head in.
Justice. Everybody here?
Bri. Yup.
Justice. I'm on my way. Did y'all know Mack's files were a
fuckin' mess?
Bri. In his defense, he didn't have a whole lot of
administrative help. All the girls worked, Carlos wasn't around
a lot...he just had himself.
Justice sighed. It was ironic how similar his life was to his
uncle's, only for him to wind up running his club.
Justice. Don't I know it...I'm on my way out there.
Bri nodded and walked out, leaving the door cracked. Justice
picked up some important files and began walking the hardwood
floors, his heels clicking loudly.

Carlos stood outside while everyone else had the meeting
inside. This was this first time everyone had been back together
since his dad died, and it had suddenly become too crowded on
the inside for him. As much as he tried to act like his dad's
death didn't hurt him, the stuff he couldn't say before was
starting to haunt him now. He took a seat on top of his car hood
while he let his thoughts run.
"I always knew you'd keep yo hand in that club.. That's how it's
'posed to be."
He paused for a moment and wiped his face thinking about what
stopped him from talking more to his dad. Mid-thought, he looked
up at the door as it opened. He smirked slightly when Boogie
peaked her head out.
Bri. There you go.. Justice was looking for you..
Carlos nodded.
Carlos. Alright.. I'll be in there.. In a minute..
Bri nodded and was about to slip back in the building, but she
turned around instead.
Bri. Are... Do you wanna talk about it?
Carlos smirked and looked down at the dirt as his smile faded
back into the feelings he wanted to ignore.
Carlos. I wouldn't even know where to start honestly...
Bri. Start wherever you want to...
Bri made her way over and leaned on the car with her arms folded
and her ankles crossed as she looked over at him.
Carlos. Growing up, I used to give everybody hell.. -shakes
head- That's how I ended up with his ass and I hated that shit
too..
Carlos paused and sighed.
Carlos. You don't really know how much somebody mean to you
until you can't reach out to them no more..
Bri nodded.
Bri. I'm sure he knows.... You was his boy.. Every night he'd
ask "yall seen my boy 'round here?" and then he'd tell us "Well,
don't say nothin to him.. he just like his damn daddy.."
Carlos looked over at Bri as she cracked a smiled, so he did the
same and looked down at the ground.
Bri. I'm sure he probably cursin at me right now for talkin to
you.. -laugh- But I'm sure he still smiling at you...
Carlos thought about her words as she pulled herself from her
relaxed position and he slid off the car next to her.
Carlos. Thank you...
Bri nodded and gave him a warm smile before she headed to the
door. Once they walked in all eyes found them.
Justice. Uh uh! Where you been? And how you gon be an owner and
be missing in action?
Carlos smirked.
Carlos. Damn can I get some fresh air? -laugh- I aint miss
nothing.. Yall probably just finished the introducin' yall
selves..
He gave Justice a smirk as they made their way to the circle.
Carlos. I think I got an idea though..
Justice. What?
Carlos. Let's host a Block Party..
