Kemena stepped out of the shower and dried herself off then she
wrapped up in her robe. She had left all of the doors open
between Jamal's room and their shower so she could hear anything
going on. She dried her hair as she walked to Jamals room. She
stood in the doorway making sure they were both really sleep
before taking her second exit for the night. It was just in her
favor that Khari made a fuss about sleeping next to her brother,
and that Jamal also agreed to share his bed with his wild
sleeping little sister. She watched the both of them and she
listened for their soft snores of exhaustion. Once she confirmed
them to be sleep, she pulled the door to just barley being open
before she made her way downstairs to the living room.
All day she had been thinking about the call she had received
from Boss, and it had her on edge. She made her way to the bar
and poured herself a straight drink as she tried to relax before
Bakari got home. She already didn't want to tell him about it,
so if she was tense then that would just make it that much
worse..
She held her drink as she walked around the house checking the
locks.
"You're being crazy... Sit your ass down."
She took another sip of her drink and then took her seat on the
couch as she pulled both of her feet up near her body. She
thought about turning on the tv, but she didn't want to make too
much noise since the kids were upstairs. Another part of her
simply wanted to be alone with her thoughts... She thought about
what Boss would tell her to do, and she thought about the
consequences of her not doing what he said. She took another
swallow of her drink....
She looked at the clock on the tv and saw it was going on
midnight. Her glass was half empty, and her mind had been
reflecting on the years she had known Boss, and the times he
made attempts on her life. She knew this time was different
because she had other **** to live for besides money.
Before she could finish her next thought she heard keys rattling
and the front door creaking open. She watched quietly as Bakari
walked through the door keeping the lights off. He looked up the
stairs as he walked into the house and saw that the lights were
off up there too. His eyes finally found her in the dark living
room and they locked eyes. She smiled at him as he smirked at
her as she got off of the couch.
Kemena. Hey Daddy...
She made her way over to hug him and he wrapped his arms around
her waist squeezing her tight.
Bakari. I missed yo ass girl..
She smiled as she held her arms around his neck.
Kemena. I missed yo ass too..
Bakari pulled back and went in for a kiss and she obliged while
he picked her up by her waist and she wrapped her legs around
his. He walked her back into the living room and laid her on the
couch. As he pulled back he looked at her again.
Bakari. You been drinkin my brown?
She glanced at her glass then back at him.
Kemena. A lil bit...
He sighed and pulled himself off of her then turned on a lamp
from the side table. He saw her glass sitting on the table with
a little less than a shot left and then he looked at her again.
Bakari. You just came home from vacation... What's on your mind
now K?
She sighed as she pushed herself up looking at him.
Kemena. I'm good.. Why you always think I have a problem?
Bakari. Cause you only touch my **** if you tryna start a
problem or solve one..
She paused for a moment because he was right. However, she still
wasn't sure what to tell him about her phone call. She sighed
and stood up off the couch adjusting her robe.
Kemena. It's nothing baby.. How was your day though? I thought
you would have made it in a little earlier than now.. I cooked..

Bakari. Kemena, I do not feel like doing this with you tonight.
Kemena turned and looked at Bakari as he rubbed his face, stress
oozing off of him.
Kemena. What's wrong?
Bakari. Some shit happened on the block today. Fuckin' kid
killed himself.
Kemena. Oh my God.
Bakari poured himself a glass of Hen, rubbing his temples.
Bakari. I was having some trouble with one of the stores, so I
went down there to see them and right when I walked out, this
kid shot himself.
Kemena. Baby...
Bakari. His mama came out there going crazy and everything, the
fuckin EMTs took forever to get there.
He shook his head and downed his glass.
Bakari. I'm not in the mood for this cat and mouse stuff,
Kemena. Tell me whatever you got to tell me so we can deal with
this shit, please?

Kemena looked at Bakari as he poured himself another drink. She
still hadn't decided where to start, and hearing about how
tragic his day was didn't make it any better. She bit the side
of her lip as her eyes trailed off of him. She could remember
right when he told her she wasn't working for Boss anymore, and
she accepted it, and she really hadn't thought anything else
about it until he called her.
Her eyes found his face as he turned around looking at her.
Kemena. Bae..
She could see he had on his "no bullshit" face and she sighed.
Kemena. I don't need you flipping out on me.... Remember the
kids upstairs..
Bakari. Kemena... Talk.
Kemena. I got a call today....
Bakari continued to stare at her then he closed his eyes began
to rub his head with his middle and index fingers. She knew he
was growing impatient with her.
Bakari. You stressing me out... Who called you bae?
She spoke in a lighter tone hoping it would make a positive
difference in his reaction.
Kemena. Boss...
She watched as his eyes opened and he looked at her with
confusion and anger written all over his face.
Bakari. Who called you?
Kemena. Boss called me earlier... He said he wanted me to do a
job... -sigh- I told him couldn't since I had kids and...
She sighed and decided to keep Boss' threats out of her story
since she knew it would just add fuel to the fire that was
already burning behind his eyes.
Kemena. He aint make it a choice so I just said okay..

Bakari. What you mean it wasn't a choice, Kemena? That nigga
ain't your man, and our dealings with him been done.
Bakari poured himself another drink and put the liquor up. He
knew if he wasn't careful, the liquor would take over his brain
and he would do something he'd surely regret in the morning. He
sat on the back of the couch.
Bakari. What's the job?
Kemena. He didn't say.
Bakari. Well, it don't matter anyway. You ain't doing it.
Kemena. Baby--
Bakari. I'm already exposed as it is, Kemena. You not gon' be
out here exposed either. Everybody knows you're my wife,
everybody knows we got kids.
Bakari sipped his drink as Kemena looked down at her hands.
Bakari. That's all he said?
Kemena. What you mean?
Bakari. You said you told him you wasn't going to do it cause
you got kids...he just said you gon' do it and left it at that?
Kemena walked to him.
Kemena. I just don't want you to worry about it, Bakari, that's
all. I'm gon' do this one thing and--
Bakari. No. You not. I'ma talk to him.
Kemena. Daddy--
Bakari. You not gon' be assed out for some fuck nigga, Mama. I
ain't havin' it.

Kemena bit the side of her lip looking down. When she glanced up
at his face, they locked eyes. She knew he was serious by the
look on his face. She didn't really want to do the job, but ever
since she met him, Boss would randomly pop up in her life to
torment her with his presence and an order or some orders
depending on whatever he had going on at the time. After she did
what she had to do, she always took her cut and he would leave
her alone.
Kemena. I don't wanna do it really bae... I just don't want to
add to your plate... And I already know how he operates...
Bakari. I already said...
Kemena. I heard you.. And I'm not going to do it..
She sat down into his lap as she straddled him.
Bakari. And what you mean add to my plate? Yall are my plate..
-sigh- What all he say to you?
She watched as he took another drink looking at her. She bit her
lip again then she glanced up at the ceiling.
Kemena. When I told him I had the kids and he basically
threatened them to threaten me..
She shook her head then sighed.
Kemena. After that I just asked what he wanted from me? He told
me to meet him at the island on Wednesday at 2... And he told me
not to get you involved..
Kemena. I just wanna continue living in peace baby... That's
all..
Bakari looked at her for a moment. She knew her worry was
written all over her face, and she also knew that Boss was more
than capable of kidnapping because she'd already been victim.
Bakari looked at her for a few more moments then he nodded.
Bakari. Gimme a kiss..
She leaned down and kissed him. Their kiss deepened just off of
emotion before he unwillingly pulled away from her.
Bakari. Go upstairs.. Ima lock up down here... I'll be up in a
minute..
Kemena kissed his cheek then they kissed again. After that she
got off of his lap and made her way to the stairs. Before she
went up she spoke to him again.
Kemena. If you're hungry your plate is in the microwave..
After she made her way upstairs, she did another check in with
Jamal's room to see both Jamal and Khari still sleeping soundly.
She smiled slightly and went to their room leaving the door open
for Bakari to enter whenever he made his way up. She realized he
wasn't coming right up when she heard the buttons on the
microwave. She sighed to herself and curled up with her pillow
and closed her eyes.. She drifted off to sleep until she felt
his presence. The clock said 3:48am, as he wrapped his arm
around her. She pushed back into him and he squeezed her a
little tighter as she drifted off again.
END SCENE
