Ezra looked over at Leilani as she sat in his passenger seat
bobbing her head to his music and looking out of the window in
her own world. He looked back at the road as his mind bounced
around with everything that had been going on.. He and Miguel
were still trying to put together a plan to clean up the mess
Andrade made, he was anticipating gun play over Savannah, his
father popped up out of thin air, and he had a new
responsibility to tend to all at the same time.. At this moment,
his main priority was trying to figure out what to tell Leilani
when she meets her little brother. He had arranged for Lisa to
meet him at the park with Devin since Amber was still at the
hospital.
He pulled into the park and backed in as his phone went off. He
looked at it and saw Savannah was calling him. He answered the
phone as he turned down the music.
Ez. Hey baby..
Savannah. Hey.. What are you up to?
Ez. Shit.. Just got to the park with Lani.. What you doin?
Savannah. On my way to see Cassie.. Something happened..
Ez. Oh.. She alright?
Savannah. I dont know yet but I was just calling to check on
yall..
Ez. It's just us right now... I'll let you know how it go
though...
Savannah. Alright. Well. Love you..
Ez. Love you back..
They both hung up and Leilani looked over at Ez.
Lani. We at the park?
Ez nodded.
Ez. Yeahh.. You ready to get out?
Lani nodded and smiled as she unbuckled her seat belt. He
smirked and did the same, then he made his way around to the
passenger side of the car opening her door for her. She hopped
out of the car and grabbed his hand automatically. He held her
hand as they walked down to the playground.
Ez. Aye babygirl..
Lani looked up at him and he picked her up carrying her as she
smiled.
Ez. How would you feel about a little brother?
Lani. A little brother?
She looked at him confused, and he nodded looking at her.
Ez. Yeahh. Like.. Belle and Rod..
Lani smirked at him.
Lani. Did you and Vannah get me a little brother?
Ez paused for a moment
Ez. What you mean?
Lani. I asked Vannah if yall were gonna have kids some day... So
she musta told you and yall are gonna get me a little brother..
Ez. Uhh.. -sigh- Damn.. Not exactly babygirl...
Lani. What you mean?
He found a park bench and took a seat sitting Leilani on his lap
as he tried to find the words to tell her so that she would
understand what was going on..
Ez. Well.. -sigh- Daddy and Vannah didn't really get you a
brother... Daddy got a surprise... And now he's your surprise
too.. I guess..
Lani smiled.
Ez. I gotta tell you though.. Daddy and Vannah probably wont
have any kids..
Lani. Why not?
Ez. Well... You know how Daddy sings that one song to yall
sometimes?.. you gotta be a special lady..
Lani nodded and smiled.
Ez. Well.. Vannah's a really special lady, but that means we
can't have kids even though we love each other..
Lani. So you can't have kids because she's a special lady?
Ez thought about it for a moment and nodded.
Ez. Yeahh..
Lani thought about it for a moment and sighed.
Lani. So I don't get a little brother?
Before Ez could respond to her, he heard someone clear their
throat as they approached them. He turned to see Lisa walking up
with Devin laying on her shoulder.
Lisa. Hello..
Ez. Hey..
He looked at Lani as she looked up at Lisa and Devin. Devin
lifted his head slightly to look at Ez then he laid his head
back down..
Ez. Say lil man.. You remember me?
He reached out and touched Devin's hand and Devin lifted his
head up looking at Ezra and nodded.
Devin. Daddy...
Ez. Come here..
Devin looked at Leilani who was sitting on his other knee, and
then he looked at Ezra then to Lisa. She slowly handed him off
to Ez as he let out a whine.. At the same time Lisa's phone went
off, so she spoke as she stepped away.
Lisa. Hush.. You're alright..
Ez. Dont trip lil man.. We good.. Meet your sister...
Lani. This is my little brother?
Ez nodded.
Ez. Yeahh. His name is Devin.. Devin.. Can you say hi to
Leilani?
Devin waived slightly and Leilani smiled throwing her arms
across to him hugging him. For a moment he accepted her hug,
then he began to push her off with a grunt. Leilani backed off
and looked at Ez.
Leilani. He doesn't like me...
Ez. He loves you.. He just dont know it yet..
Devin held his arm out and began to point to the playground.
Devin. Swing?
Ez. Yeahh.. We can go swing..
As he put both of them on the ground, as Lisa joined them
again..
Lisa. I need to get back to the hospital.. Are you guys gonna be
okay for a couple of hours?
Ez looked down at his two and nodded.
Ez. We good.. Go on and be with her.. I got him..
Lisa nodded and she leaned down kissing the side of Devin's head
then she walked away. Devin began to whine again as he watched
her leave, so Ezra picked him up walking toward the swing with
Leilani looking up at him walking right by his side.
Ez. You alright kid.. Let's go swing.. Remember?
Devin. Swing?
Ez nodded and they made it to the swing set. He let Leilani sit
in the regular seats while he put Devin in the baby seat. He
pushed them both at the same time while they both laughed. He
couldn't help but take a sigh of relief since he'd finally
gotten their introduction out of the way.
... About an hour and a half later, Lisa hadn't returned, and Ez
and the kids were growing tired of the park. Leilani stood at
the top of the slide and helped Devin slide from the top. Once
he was down, she was right behind him. He scooped them both up
in his arms as they smiled looking at him.
Ez. Yall hungry?
Leilani nodded then Devin did too.
Ez. Alright.. We gon go get something to eat alright?
He got another couple of nods and he began to walk them to the
car. This time he got them both strapped in the backseat and he
began heading toward his house but not before stopping to get
them a few burgers.. For the rest of the night, he played with
the both of them until it was approaching Lani's bedtime.. He'd
called Lisa a couple of time, but she hadn't answered, so they
made another run to get him some pull ups. After they were both
bathed, he got them both ready for bed in Leilani's room.
He laid between them and Leilani had fallen asleep first. Devin
looked up at him was red eyes, and Ez could tell he was fighting
his sleep.
Devin. Daddy... I want my mama?
Ez paused for a moment. He didn't know what to say.
Ez. Uh.. You gon spend the night with daddy tonight... But I'll
take you to see mama in the morning alright?
Devin nodded.
Devin. Daddy tonight.. Mama in morning?
Ez nodded.
Ez. Yeahh.. Get some rest.. Close your eyes...
Before long Devin had drifted off to sleep as well, and Ezra
slid out of the bed and gave another look at them before he
closed the door leaving a crack in it. "I know she dip out on
this kid like this..."
