Amiya sat in the middle of the couch as she watched Josiah play
with his toys and occasionally look up at the tv. She looked at
her phone and decided to answer it since it was Janece, her
second in charge.
Amiya. Hello?
Janece. Hey lady.. I was just calling to let you know we did
good numbers today too.. And I went ahead and had everyone clean
up their stations since we'll be closed tomorrow.
Amiya. Okay..
The line went silent, and Amiya could tell Janece was looking
for an explanation for her absence for the last couple of days,
but instead Amiya gave her something else.
Amiya. I know I been tripping lately, and I am sorry... I just..
-sigh- I just wanted to say thank you for holding it down..
Janece. Is everything alright though? I mean.. I know we aint
known each other long, but... Is there anything I can do to
help?
Amiya. No.. You've done everything I needed you to do.. I
promise I won't forget it..
Janece. I'm just doing my job.. -smile- You let me know if you
need anything alright?
Amiya nodded.
Amiya. Thank you..
The two said their goodbyes as Josiah looked at Amiya.
Josiah. Mama...
Amiya looked at him as he held his toy airplane.
Josiah. Where's daddy?
Amiya sighed as she thought about a couple nights ago when she
and Jerome had gotten into it. It ended when she'd yelled at him
to get out, and to her surprise he left. She was already going
through a world wind of emotions, and Jerome made it in late
from his food truck again. It ended up being the perfect storm.
She shook the thoughts from her head and looked at Josiah.
Amiya. He'll be back...
"I hope.."
Josiah. Where he go?
Amiya. To work... You want a fruit cup?
She watched as his face lit up and she smiled standing up from
the couch. She made her way to the kitchen before her phone rang
again.. She sighed seeing it was her mother, and she answered
hesitantly.
Amiya. Hey ma.
Monica. Hey babygirl.. What are you doing?
Amiya. Nothing.. Getting me and Jo a fruit cup..
Monica. Oh.. That's good.. I haven't talked to you in a few
days.. You been ignoring me?
Amiya. No.. I just been having a lot going on..
Monica. Is everything alright?
Amiya. Yeah. Everything is fine.
Monica. Mmmhm...
The line went silent for a while, and Monica spoke again.
Monica. What happened?
Amiya. Nothing.
Monica. So you just gon sit on this phone and lie to me to my
face huh?
Amiya pulled two fruit cups out of the fridge and grabbed them
both spoons as she held the phone to her ear with her shoulder,
making her way back to the couch.
Amiya. The shop is good.. Jo is good.. I'm good..
Monica. Where's Jerome?
Amiya paused for a moment.
Amiya. I don't know.. Between his food truck and his cousin
house I guess..
Monica. Why don't you know? Are yall doing alright?
Amiya sighed. She was now regretting even responding to her
mothers question.
Amiya. We had an argument, and he left..
Monica. He left or you told him to leave?
Amiya. I didn't think he would actually leave though mama... He
don't even wanna argue with me anymore..
Monica. Nobody wants to sit up and argue all the time Amiya..
You should know that... After you get off, you don't even be
wanting to talk to folks half the time.. Let alone come home to
an argument..
Amiya thought about it for a moment as she opened Josiah's fruit
cup and handed it to him.
Monica. Hello?
Amiya. I'm here...
She was quiet for a little longer then she spoke after opening
her own fruit.
Amiya. I wasn't trying to argue with him.... I just wanted him
to hear me...
Monica. So you started yelling and he wasn't having it?
Amiya sighed.
Monica. Look.. I don't know what's going on with you, but I know
Mama said how you and JoJo aint been by her house in a few days
too.. Dont make me come all the way down there to get you
together... Cause I will..
Amiya shook her head.
Amiya. I'm fine.. I gotta go ma.. I'll call you back..
Monica. Amiya Latrice...
Amiya. I love you ma... I gotta go.
Monica sighed.
Monica. I love you too...
Amiya hung up the phone and began to eat her fruit cup as she
looked at Josiah who had put down his spoon and started eating
with his hand. She watched him for a while more, before he
glanced at her finishing up his fruit.
Once he was done, he stared at her for a moment. He sat his cup
on the table and walked over to her touching her arms with his
sticky hands.
Josiah. Are you sad mama?
Amiya was caught off guard by the question, and emotions that
she'd been holding in for some time seemed to ease their way to
the surface as she tried to put on a smile and nod. Her eyes
began to burn with tears though.
Amiya. I'm okay baby..
Josiah climbed onto the couch and wrapped his sticky hands
around her and she wrapped her arms around him back. He pulled
back from her slightly holding her face with both of his little
hands while he gave her a very serious look.
Josiah. Don't cry mommy... I love you okay? And daddy loves you
too.. Thiiiiis much..
He stretched his arms out wide, and she smiled as she wiped the
couple of tears that had fallen as she nodded.
Amiya. I know.. And I love you back..
She hugged him tight again taking a breath. Even though he gave
her a run for her money on most days, he was very sweet when he
felt like something was wrong with her. The warmth he gave her
touched her heart, and she was able to pull herself back
together.
Once they released, he went back to the floor playing with his
toys, and she decided to join him. She was hurt after losing
another baby almost exactly a year from her still birth, and it
seemed her biggest fear was becoming a reality. Even though she
didn't know what the future held for her, she was reminded that
she could handle it all because of who she had watching her and
rooting for her.
