Josh walked into the airport just as the wind began to pick up.
He held the phone to his ear as he sighed.
Josh. I made it, Amiya. This fuckin weather ain't playing.
Amiya. At least you made it safely.
He sighed. It had been two weeks since they lost their child,
and things had only gone downhill. They'd stopped talking, and
saw much less of each other. When Tristan told him there was a
job opportunity in Jorden City, and Amiya told him that he
should look into it, he knew they'd met their end with each
other. He sat on a chair as the phone stayed silent for a
moment.
Josh. I'm sorry.
Amiya. For what?
Josh sighed again.
Josh. Everything. The arguing, us drifting apart.
Amiya. Josh, it wasn't your fault. I guess in the grand scheme
of it all, we were trying to hold onto something that wasn't
meant to be.
Josh. Yeah...I guess we were.
Amiya. I'm going to be rooting for you. Okay?
Josh. Thank you.
Someone sat next to Josh, texting away.
Josh. Call me if you want to talk. I know things are still up in
the air with your brother and everything.
Amiya. Okay.
The conversation had ended, even though Josh wish it hadn't.
Saying goodbye to Amiya for that conversation meant he was
saying goodbye to her for good, and they both knew it.
Amiya. Bye, Josh.
Josh. Bye, Amiya.
After a few more lingering seconds, Amiya ended the call. Josh
stared at his phone and fought stray tears.
??. Rough phone call?
Josh looked and nodded.
??. My texts aren't so hot either.
Josh. Sorry to hear that, man.
The PA system came on.
PA. We're sorry to inform you, travelers, but all incoming and
outgoing flights have been cancelled due to inclement weather
conditions. We apologize for any inconvenience, and will be
working to reschedule all of you.
Josh looked at the man, who looked to be distressed.
Josh. Outgoing?
??. I gotta get home, man.
Josh. Sorry, man.
There was a pause.
Josh. I'm Josh.
??. Leo.
Josh and Leo shook hands...
...A few minutes later, Josh and Leo were standing with another
group of people as a loud siren sounded. The lights flickered
momentarily before completely going out. The wind outside had
become fierce, and huge dark clouds began covering the sky.
Airport workers tried their best to calm everyone, but it was to
no avail. This wasn't a regular round of bad weather for the
east coast. It was something worse. Much worse.
Leo. I have to call my fiancee.
Leo pulled out his phone, thankful he still had signal in the
horrible weather. He called Samone and, after a few rings, she
picked up.
Samone. Baby?
Leo. Hey, are you okay?
Samone. I'm with Savannah and Ezra, we're hunkered down. Where
are you?
Leo. At the airport. They cancelled all the flights.
Samone. Baby, they said it's a hurricane. They shut the whole
city down, category 3 or something like that.
Leo. Listen to me, baby, you and the baby are good. I know
Savannah and Ezra got y'all.
Samone. What about you?
Leo. I'm gon' be fine. Me, you, and Munchkin still gon' take our
big 2 week vacation next year and everything. You hear me?
Samone chuckled nervously.
Samone. I love you, Leo.
Leo. I love you, too, baby.
At that moment, Leo lost signal. He sighed when the phone cut
and looked up just as a tree came crashing through windows in
the airport. Everyone ducked as the wind, now in a tunnel state,
whipped their clothes and luggage around. Screams began filling
the airport as signs became detached, chairs became unbolted,
and machines turned over. The heavy rain jetted in through the
broken glass as everyone became slammed with rain and debris.
Leo ducked just as a chair came flying at him.
Leo. Fuck!
Josh. You good?!
Leo. Yeah! We gotta get the fuck up outta here, man!
Josh and Leo slowly began ushering people near them towards a
nearby hallway with no windows. Leo looked up as a little girl
screamed for a stuffed animal. The little girl broke away from
her mother and ran back to get the animal. At that moment, the
winds picked up another set of bolted chairs and they came
flying across the room.
??. Oh my God, no!
Leo turned to see Josh running to the girl. He put her to the
ground just in time for the chair to skip her and hit him square
in the head. He hit the floor face first. Hard. Blood began to
immediately leak as people screamed. Josh lied in the floor
motionless as Leo stared at him. He snapped himself from his
gaze and continued to usher people out of the way. Suddenly, he
felt a pierce through his back. He looked down and seen a chunk
of glass in his torso. He coughed, blood seeping from his mouth
as he fell to his knees. He slumped over as he reached for his
phone. He managed to grab it, unlock it, and stared.
The last thing Leo got to see with his last breath was a picture
of Samone that he'd taken on their first date. One that he vowed
he would treasure forever. The last thing he saw was the love of
his life before his breathing completely stopped...
