Lacy sat in her car as she spoke to Gabrielle on the phone.
Gabrielle had talked her into attending a group grief counseling
session since she was still having a time dealing with Amir's
death. The counselor advised her of the time and place to meet,
and she watched as the group began to gather in a circle.
Lacy. I can't believe you talked me into this...
Gabby. I'm glad you're there.. You should really talk to
someone... And you don't wanna talk to me..
Lacy. It's not that I don't want to... You have so much going on
and..
Gabby. Nonsense... You're my cousin and I don't care what I have
going on...
Lacy. Okay...
Gabby went silent for a moment.
Gabby. Well. Go to the session.. And Aeson and I are going to
have a good time so dont worry about him... And I just want you
to know you're not alone..
Lacy. Thank you Gabby.. I know you're here for me... And thank
you for watching Aeson.. -sigh- I'll call you back when it's
over okay?
The two said their goodbyes and Lacy got out of the car.
Lacy. Here goes nothing..
She slowly made her way over to the chairs, and she took a seat
with two empty chairs on side of her as a woman approached her.
??. Lacy Winston? I'm Veronica Mills.. We spoke on the phone...
Lacy nodded looking up at the counselor.
Veronica. I'm glad you could make it..
Lacy. Thank you...
Veronica. Sit tight and we'll be starting shortly okay?
Lacy nodded and Veronica went to greet the other people there as
Lacy pulled out her phone and began browsing her social media.

Tristan pulled up in his truck as he listened to Glenn complain
on the phone about Josh's antics for the 100th time that week.
Tristan. Glenn, here's the deal, you're locked into the contract
either way it goes. So, you either keep Josh on the team or you
release him and still have to pay him 25 million over the next
25 years. You're losing money regardless, so why not get
yourself a few championship rings out of the deal for the
organization.
Glenn. I don't know, Tristan...
Tristan. I'm going into another meeting. Do not do anything rash
until we can sit down like men and discuss this further.
Before he could object, Tristan hung up on him and gave a heavy
sigh. He collected his things and stepped from the truck. As he
walked across Titan Park, he seen a smiling Veronica look over
at him. They met halfway and embraced each other.
Veronica. This is a surprise, I thought you were done here.
Tristan. Been stressed and thinking about Nyla a lot, so I
figured it was time for a meeting before I done something crazy.
Veronica. How is everything? I've been keeping up with your
clients.
Tristan. Kevin is great as always. The newest one, Elijah, is
getting his feet wet but he's upstanding. Josh on the other
hand.
Veronica. He's been all over the news.
Tristan. And causing me all kinds of headaches.
Veronica shook her head.
Veronica. At any rate, I'm glad you're here. Mingle, we've got a
few minutes.
Tristan nodded and said hello to a few people near him before
his eyes landed on someone sitting by herself. He smiled when
she glanced to her left because he almost immediately recognized
her. He slipped to her and sat down.
Tristan. If it isn't my dance partner.

Lacy. Hey you..
Lacy looked over at him and smiled slightly confused. She took a
sigh of relief though since she had a familiar face, but she was
still skeptical about the group environment.
Lacy. Are you going to be sitting through this too?
Tristan nodded.
Tristan. Yeahh.. I haven't been to one of these sessions in a
while though.. What about you? First time?
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. That obvious?
Tristan smiled slightly.
Tristan. Lil bit.. But it's nothing to be nervous about... Here,
we've all lost someone that meant a lot to us..
Lacy looked over at him then Veronica began talking.
Veronica. If you all could please find seats, we'll be getting
started in about 3 minutes..
She turned her attention back to Tristan as he spoke again.
Tristan. You don't have to share if you don't want to...
Sometimes it's just nice to know you're not alone..
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. It's kinda hard to not feel alone..
Tristan nodded.
Tristan. Especially when you're so used to them being there....
-sigh- I know what you mean..
Lacy looked over at Tristan.
Lacy. You lost your wife?

Tristan nodded. Before he could respond, Veronica spoke again.
Veronica. Tristan, we're glad you decided to come back and see
us. Do you want to start?
Tristan stood up and cleared his throat.
Tristan. Most of you already know me. For those who don't, I'm
Tristan. Two years ago, I lost the most important person I've
ever met in my life, my wife Nyla. She died in childbirth and,
unfortunately, my daughter didn't last too long after. I haven't
really been right since, but I'm slowly getting better as time
goes on.
Veronica. Why did you return today?
Tristan. Because they've been on my mind lately with everything
happening. I know that I could turn back to drugs or anything
else, but I decided I needed to come here to a meeting.
Veronica. Thank you, Tristan.
He nodded and sat down, looking at Lacy.
Lacy. Wow.
Tristan. I like these groups. Nobody judges you or asks too many
questions. You share what you're comfortable with, and we
support each other.

Lacy looked over at Tristan, then she turned her attention to
another person that decided to speak.
Woman. I'm Jennifer.. I lost my son 6 months ago to a drunk
driver, and last Saturday was his birthday.. I've been trying so
hard to be strong for my other kids, but Joey was my rock, and
he helped me with my life and his sisters...I'm just lost
without him... It's just hard to go on...
Veronica asked a couple of follow up questions, then the woman
took her seat. Before she knew it, Lacy had rose to her feet.
Veronica. Would you like to share Lacy?
Lacy nodded as she glanced at Tristan then around at everyone
else.
Lacy. Hi.. I'm Lacy.. And I lost my husband about 4 months ago..
He was my everything and we'd just welcomed a little boy, and
bought a house... I've been having a hard time coping with his
death because I feel so robbed of our future.. He was a good
man, and he'd held a piece of me since high school... -sigh- I
can hardly get out of bed some days..
Veronica. Tell us what made you come here today..
Lacy. Well.. I know I can't make him come back, so my cousin
recommended I try this support group...
Veronica nodded.
Veronica. Well Lacy. We are all glad you made it spend time with
us today, and we will lift you up in love.
Lacy smiled slightly as she took her seat again. Something about
speaking her truth made her feel like a weight had been lifted.
Lacy. That felt nice..

Tristan. I'm glad it was.
They smiled at each other as Veronica began to talk about
patience practices that they could do with themselves if they
felt overwhelmed...
...An hour later, Veronica dismissed the group for the week and
Tristan stood up, stretching his arms. He smiled at Lacy as she
looked over at him.
Tristan. See? Wasn't so bad.
Lacy. Not at all.
Tristan. Where you headed? You want to maybe get some lunch?
Lacy glanced at him and he chuckled.
Tristan. Innocent late lunch between two people.
Lacy. Something tells me you have a problem proving your
innocence a lot, Mr. Bordeaux.
Tristan. Not a problem, just have to do it a lot. There's a cafe
nearby that we can go to. You can follow me.
Lacy nodded and the two parted. Tristan climbed in his truck and
within minutes, they were parking in front of a storefront cafe.
He stepped out of his truck and smiled at her as she stepped
from her car.
Lacy. This looks adorable.
Tristan. This neighborhood is fairly new. They built it up with
a small town mindset. It's pretty nice.
He opened the door for her and followed her inside.

Lacy walked through the door and the smell of good food filled
her nostrils while the coziness of the atmosphere set in.
Lacy. This place is really inviting..
Tristan nodded.
Tristan. Yeahh.. It's one of my favorite places when I want the
feeling of a home cooked meal..
Lacy. You don't cook?
Tristan. It's just me so it's very seldom..
Tristan led them to a table and they took their seats opposite
each other.
Lacy. So.. Where are you from?
Tristan. How do you know I'm not from here?
Lacy. Oh.. I can tell..
Tristan smiled at her.
Tristan. I'm from New Chartres, Louisiana... Born and raised..
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. Oh okay.. You're from the deep south....
Tristan. That's right.. I'm a bit of a country boy..
Lacy nodded.
Lacy. That's interesting.... My mama's from Carver City, Texas,
so she's about as southern as I get.. I was born and raised in
Hamilton Beach.. Not too far from here..

Tristan. I've done some work in Hamilton Beach. Wasn't my
favorite place.
Lacy. Why not?
Tristan. Like I said, I'm a country boy. I have a ranch in
Carver City.
Lacy. Really?
Tristan nodded.
Tristan. It's not a big one. Not as big as I want one day.
Hamilton Beach is fast.
Lacy. You don't seem like you have too many troubles with that.
Not with the field you work in.
Tristan. I can handle it for 8 hours a day. Even 12 some days.
But, once I go home? Work is left outside. I turn my work phone
off, turn on some movies, and chill out for the night.
Lacy. I guess you've mastered it, then, huh?
Tristan. I did for one client. Then I took on multiple, and
started my own business.
Lacy. How old are you?
Tristan. 27.
A waitress came by and took their drink orders.
Lacy. Young to be such a boss.
Tristan. How old are you?
Lacy. 25.
Tristan chuckled.
Tristan. You trying to call me out like you're older than me,
girl.
Lacy. It's commendable, actually. That's what I meant.
Tristan. I know. I'm teasing.
He smiled at her.
Tristan. What do you do?

Lacy smiled lightly.
Lacy. I'm a student of the arts...
Tristan looked at her with a bit of a question as she shook her
head lightly.
Lacy. I love the arts... Everything from dance to paintings to
Broadway to music.. I had a blog for a while, and it was really
rolling... But that before life got a hold of me.
Tristan. What happened?
Lacy thought back to the night she and Jasen originally had a
fight, and she found herself in a hotel room, and then Amir
called.. It was basically a snowball of events that occurred and
she found herself here.
Tristan. You don't have to tell me if you dont want to..
Lacy. It's okay.. -sigh- I had a relationship that went south..
And it got really really messy.. Around that time my husband was
my high school sweetheart ex that had just come home from war
and he was really protective.... Just when I thought life was
looking up.. My failed relationship comes back to haunt me and I
lose my husband behind it...
Lacy looked at Tristan as the waitress returned with their
drinks.
Lacy. Life has been really hard..

Tristan. I'm sorry to hear that.
Lacy nodded and he sighed.
Tristan. Full disclosure, I know a little about what happened.
Hard for a governor's daughter to be in the news and you not see
it.
Lacy. Figures.
Tristan. Hey, believe me, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Shit
happens every single day. Only difference for people like you
and me is that we're in the public eye. Our drama gets played
out in the media.
Lacy. It's so stressful, you know?
Tristan. Definitely. Sometimes you just want to live your life
and not worry about a camera anywhere near you. Or just to let
the world know that you're still a human and you're going to go
through shit sometimes.
The waitress returned to take their food orders before walking
off again.
Tristan. It doesn't get any easier, honestly. Just gotta find
someone worth going down that road with.
Lacy. Was your wife your person?
Tristan. Absolutely. She understood every aspect of my business,
and supported it fully.
Lacy. It must have really hurt when she passed.
Tristan. Yeah. It hurt most because it was so unexpected. She
was healthy, we worked out and ate right, didn't have any
problems at all during her pregnancy. Just a freak accident in
the final hour.
He sipped his coffee and sighed.
Tristan. These days, it soothes me to think that maybe God
wanted to use them and that moment to force me to grow up. Give
up all the bull I was doing and get on my grind like I needed to
be.
