       Zinnia Natter
She just wanted to get away from the hubub of the Newton Dining
hall. It was so LOUD there sometimes, especially at the
beginning of term. She didn't want to go off-campus, and knew
her mother would complain if she did anyway, so she decided on
       the Tolkien Cafe's dining area.
"One order of lembas bread and some dip, and a chicken ceasar
salad on the side, please." Zinnia asked quietly, after having
chosen a seat and looked at the menu. "And just water to drink,
       no ice."
She hardly ever got anything fancy here. She had only glanced
through the series written by the author for whom the Cafe had
been named, and it really hadn't caught her interest too much.
Although she'd decided she should probably at least read one of
the books, if only to know what the outlandish menu items were
       based on.

       Emery March
"Mae l'ovannen, im Emery." Emery stated as she walked up
and smiled at a girl who had just sat down at a nearby table.
It was Emery's shift at the Tolkien Cafe, and she was loving it.
She had always loved the environment it presented, everyone was
cheerful and laughing most of the time. At least where Emery
went, but that may have been because she was constantly rushing
about, chatting, laughing, or various things like that herself.
"What would you like today?" She smiled cheerfully at the
girl, waiting patiently with her pad of paper in one hand and
her pencil at-the-ready and already on the paper for the moment
       the girl had her order.
"One order of lembas bread and some dip, and a chicken
caesar salad on the side, please." She asked quietly, this girl
was kind of timid wasn't she? No problem, Emery was cool with
upholding a conversation when necessary "And just water to
       drink, no ice."
"Alrighty then. One order lembas bread, a side of chicken
caesar salad, water-no ice-, and what kind of dip did you want?"
Emery smiled comfortably again. She wanted to make the girl feel
at ease, which she did by smiling and standing very casually.
She lightly tapped her foot to a song she had stuck in her head,
       waiting for an answer.

"Mae l'ovannen, im Emery." The waitress stated as she walked up
       and smiled at Zinnia.
"Um.. Zinnia" she muttered, in reply to what she hoped was an
introduction. She was caught by surprise at the language. It
wasn't one she'd ever heard, although, after a glance back at
the entrance, Zinnia figured it was probably from the author,
yet again. She really ought to read the books.
"What would you like today?" The waitress smiled cheerfully at
her, waiting patiently with her pad of paper in one hand and her
       pencil already on the paper.
"One order of lembas bread and some dip, and a chicken caesar

smiled again. She lightly tapped her foot, waiting for an
       answer.
"Oh, um..." Zinnia glanced back at the menu. "Brown sugar and
cinnamon sauce, if you have it, please." She sighed as soon as
the waitress had disappeared around the corner. It was going to
be one of those waitresses, who were determined to make your day
better no matter what was wrong. But she supposed it was better
than being in the dining hall.

She wandered back into the backroom, humming as she went. She
gave the order and went about her business for a bit, but
momentarily returned for the girl's food.
"Here you go, Zinnia." Emery smiled, lingering for a moment
while she set the food very slowly and carefully onto the table.
       "How are you today?"

"Oh, uh." She was caught slightly unawares by the question. "I'm
fine. Just avoiding the crowds. Yourself?" While Emery was
perhaps rather highly emotive for Zinnia's taste, she didn't
want to be rude, especially not to the waitress who was in
       charge of her food.

a conversation. Not a good sign, but she might be more talkative
than she seemed. "I'm fine. Just avoiding the crowds. Yourself?"
"I'm having a pretty great day to be honest. My sister is
feeling more independent than usual, and my friends are all in
pretty good moods too. So I can't complain about anything
really." Emery then wrinkled her nose and tilted her head back
and forth, nodding as though she only half-understood what it
was like to dislike being around a lot of people. Emery was an
extrovert, but she knew quite a few introverts and knew some
people just didn't like crowds. "Makes sense, my sister does the
same thing. I don't get that way personally, but Sabrina hates
being around crowds of strangers. I'm here because it's my
shift, because my Dad believes 'spending money' and 'money
earned yourself' mean the same thing." Emery laughed. "I'm just
glad he doesn't feel the same way about paying for school or I
wouldn't be here!" Emery smiled, one hand resting on her hip,
and one hand still clasping her notepad and pencil.
This Zinnia girl seemed nice, but Emery was hoping she'd be
able to coax the girl into a conversation without making her too
       uncomfortable.

"Mmm." The girl was clearly dying to go on, and something about
her meek response made the girl come to some inner conclusion
       about introverts.
"Makes sense, my sister does the same thing. I don't get that

Yep, definitely an extrovert, Zinnia thought. But at least she's
nice. She did chuckle a bit at the last comment, adding, "Yeah,
I save up during the summer and winter breaks too. I don't live
close enough to work during the semester."
What she didn't add was that she worked at the local zoo and
detested almost every moment of it, except when she got to work
with the snakes and lead the tours through that section of the
zoo. And sometimes the spiders. But the spiders gave her the
creepy-crawlies if she paid too much attention to her own words.
"So, um, Emery, wasn't it? What's your concentration?"

"Mmm." Was literally all Zinnia said, but Emery wasted no
time dwelling on that and moved to the next comment, about
       avoiding the crowds.
"Makes sense, my sister does the same thing. I don't get that

chuckled a little, and Emery smile widened.
"It's really no fun working, but with a job like mine you meet
some of the most... interesting people on campus. Almost as
interesting as the people you could meet at the campus dining
       hall!" Emery laughed.
"So, um, Emery, wasn't it? What's your concentration?"
       Zinnia asked meekly.
"Yeah, my concentration is instrumental music actually. Guitar
is kind of my thing." Emery laughed, tucking a piece of her hair
behind her ear. "What about you, Zinnia? What's your
       concentration?"
'Well, she's not very talkative, but at least it's the
       beginnings of a conversation.

The girl was clearly an extrovert, but today Zinnia didn't mind
as much as she normally would have.
"I'm here because it's my shift, because my Dad believes
'spending money' and 'money earned yourself' mean the same

       conversation.
"So, um, Emery, wasn't it? What's your concentration?" Zinnia
asked quietly, smiling a little bit. Extrovert or not, Emery was
at least nice. And Zinnia hadn't made too many friends, so maybe
she would keep talking with Emery. If she wasn't too pushy,
maybe Zinnia could eventually count Emery as one.
"Yeah, my concentration is instrumental music actually. Guitar
is kind of my thing." Emery laughed, tucking her hair behind her
ear. "What about you, Zinnia? What's your concentration?"
"That's neat. I used to wish I could learn to play an
instrument. I probably would have gone with the cello, though."
She smiled a little wider than usual. Emery was starting to grow
on her. "My concentration is Chemistry. So how long have you
been here?" She was starting to open up a little more to Emery.
