       Eli Broderick
The sun was beating down on the soccer field, reflecting off of
the bleachers and making Eli cringe. It was hot, dreadfully hot,
and the boy's face was red as a tomato, but he couldn't bring
himself to stop. His shirt was soaked through with sweat and his
entire body was covered in a light dusting of dirt from the
amount of times he had fallen. He was good at the game, damn
good actually, if he could just get past his clumsiness for a
little while. The field was foreign under his feet, there were
thirty-three new dips and ruts that he had to get used to and
just couldn't seem to get the hang of it.
He'd been on the field for a good two hours and had only managed
to get one ball in the goal without landing painfully on his
face or backside. He could feel the bruises forming on his body,
little purplish marks deepening and spreading into large black
and blue stains on his skin. His palms were red and sore from
landing on them and his feet were blistering, but he was
determined to make the team and he knew that he was running out
       of time before tryouts.
He stood at one end of the field, eyes narrowed and focused on
the goal at the other end. Slowly, he began dribbling the ball,
knocking it between his feet carefully and moving up the field.
He dodge the first three ruts, before catching himself on the
fourth and nearly toppling over. He ran a hand through his hair,
       tugging at the roots.
"Damn it." he groaned, kicking the ball hard and growling as it
rolls to a stop several feet from the goal.

       Mitch Rydell
Mitch stood at the edge of the soccer field for a moment, one
hand was above her eyes, shading them from the sun. And her
other hand held a soccer ball against her side. She stood and
stared for awhile at the boy on the field, watching him trip all
over the place as he tried to play, a stern expression on her
       face.
She had actually come to get some practice in before the
team had a game. Mitch had been on the soccer team for some
time, and had worked very hard to get to the point where she was
really good at it. She'd practiced a lot, and she wasn't willing
to let herself get out of practice and screw up on the field,
which she had decided there shouldn't be a chance of happening.
Mitch walked out onto the field as the boy nearly toppled
       over, he looked rather distraught.
"D*mn it." He groaned, kicking the ball hard and growling as it
rolled to a stop several feet from the goal. The klutz.
"Hey!" Mitch called, raising an eyebrow at the boy, stopping
within about ten feet from him. "You missed by a mile, what the
h*ll do you call that?" She asked bluntly, hardly blinking at
the boy. "I mean, seriously. If you can't do better you're never
going to make the team you know. That is, supposing you haven't
already realized that and are trying to make the team?"

"Damn it." He groaned, kicking the ball hard and growling as it
rolled to a stop several feet from the goal. He could do this,
he knew he could do this, it would just take time.
"Hey!" Eli's head snapped up, eyes landing on the girl who was
strolling toward him. "You missed by a mile, what the hell do
you call that?" He pursed his lips, glancing back over at the
ball; it was pretty far away from the goal. He just needed a
little bit more time on the field, an hour at most, just enough
time to plot the ruts and dips on a grind... if he did that he
       would be fine.
"I mean, seriously. If you can't do better you're never going to
make the team you know. That is, supposing you haven't already
realized that and are trying to make the team?" He felt his
stomach twist hotly and he squared his shoulders, biting down on
       the tip of his tongue.
"Ever heard of home field advantage? Yeah, I don't have that. I
have 48 hours and 56 minutes to learn this field like the back
of my hand so I don't fall on my ass." He snapped. "Seriously,
does anyone ever try to maintain the field? It is disgraceful.
There are thirty-three holes in this damn thing, the team will
be lucky to make it through the season without..." he paused,
glancing up at the sky for second, "two-fifths of its players
twisting or spraining something." He ran a hand through his
sweaty hair and jogged over to grab his ball, catching his foot
       in one of the ruts.
       "Seventeen, every fucking time!"

"Hey!" Mitch called, and the boy looked up immediately. "You
missed by a mile, what the h*ll do you call that?" He looked
around about the time she stopped walking towards him, he seemed
to be sizing up the field.
"I mean, seriously. If you can't do better you're never
going to make the team you know. That is, supposing you haven't
already realized that and are trying to make the team?" The boy
seemed upset by this and squared his shoulders. Mitch pulled her
soccer ball closer to her hip, and placed her other hand on her
other hip, tilting to one side, eyebrow cocked slightly.
"Ever heard of home field advantage? Yeah, I don't have
that. I have 48 hours and 56 minutes to learn this field like
the back of my hand so I don't fall on my *ss." He snapped.

       "Seventeen, every f*cking time!"
"Hot d*mn, are you sure that you shouldn't have some sort of
medical sh*t that says you can't be outside without someone
watching you?" Mitch briefly thought about that she may be being
too hard on him, especially considering the fact that this kid
was so clumsy that he really did seem like he needed to be
watched. But somehow he also reminded her of one of her friends
growing up, he had needed someone to pick on him just to toughen
him up. And Mitch was just the sort of person to do so.
"Anyway, how do you know exactly how many minutes you've
got to get used to the field in? I must say, that seems pretty
impressive- although it won't mean a d*mn thing if you can't
make the team, doll." Mitch smirked at the boy.

"Hot damn, are you sure that you shouldn't have some sort of

"Oh, you're one of the clever ones," he grumbled, "Never heard
that one before." He pushed himself off of the ground and
retrieved his ball, rolling it around in his hands.

"It's an autistic thing," he shot back, bouncing the ball off of
his knees before using one of his ankles to bounce it up into
the air and kicking it forcefully into the center of the goal.
       "Fucking finally!"

"Hot d*mn, are you sure that you shouldn't have some sort of

into the air and kicking it forcefully into the center of the
       goal. "F*cking finally!"
At 'autistic', Mitch's eyebrow raised slightly, but she made
sure to no longer show anything by the time he looked back at
her. It really wasn't her business what went on in his head.
Mitch switched to holding her soccer ball with her elbow,
clapping loudly. "Good job, china doll! I could almost say you
have a chance, but you'll have to keep up that sh*t to get that,
doll." She smirked at him, taking her own soccer ball, and
kicking it into the net with a smooth, similar motion to the one
       the boy had just done.
"'kay then," She said, placing her hands on her hips and
smiling, then walking a few steps closer and reaching her hand
out to shake. "I go by Mitch, what's your name, doll?" Mitch
smiled honestly, her head tilted slightly to the side.

"Fucking finally!" The girl tucked her ball under her arm and
clapped in a seemingly patronizing way.
"Good job, china doll! I could almost say you have a chance,
but you'll have to keep up that shit to get that, doll." He
rolled his eyes as she mimicked him, clearly trying to belittle
       him.
"Give me graph paper and fifteen minutes and I'll know this
field better then you." he told her, retrieving his ball and
moving back across the field carefully. He dropped the ball with
a thud and closed his eyes, pressing the toe of his shoes
against the ball for a long moment before moving up the soccer
field. His eyes were squeezed shut tightly, his mouth forming
words as he purposely moved the ball toward the goal.
Twenty-two.... fifteen... seventeen.... The second the word left
his lips, he kicked the ball hard into the goal and opened his
eyes, punching the air victoriously and looking back at her.
"Scratch that, graph paper and fourty-five seconds."
"'kay then," She said, placing her hands on her hips and
smiling, then walking a few steps closer and reaching her hand

"Elliot," he responded, shrugging slightly, "But everyone calls
       me Eli."

"Good job, china doll! I could almost say you have a chance, but
you'll have to keep up that sh*t to get that, doll." She did a
similar move and got a goal as well, and he rolled his eyes at
       her.
"Give me graph paper and fifteen minutes and I'll know this

"Be my guest, dollface." She spat, raising her arms
nonchalantly to show she didn't care.
He dropped the ball with a thud and closed his eyes, pressing
the toe of his shoes against the ball for a long moment before
moving up the soccer field. His eyes were squeezed shut tightly,
mouthing something as he did so, he kicked the ball hard into

       looking back at her.
"Scratch that, graph paper and fourty-five seconds." He
seemed so triumphant. That was what won games. That's the sort
of spirit that made Mitch smile.
She almost replied sarcastically, wondering just how mad she
could make him with ease, but then she just shrugged. "'kay
then," She said, placing her hands on her hips and smiling, then
walking a few steps closer and reaching her hand out to shake.
"I go by Mitch, what's your name, doll?" He looked down at her
hand with a raised eyebrow and shook it.
"Elliot," he responded, shrugging slightly, "But everyone
       calls me Eli."
"Well then Eli," Mitch said, retrieving her soccer ball,
walking over behind Eli, dropping it, and placing one foot on it
lightly. "How good would you say you are at soccer?" She raised
a questioning eyebrow, smirking at him yet again. "Just how fast
are your reflexes?" She started to slowly lean back and take her
foot off of the ball, deciding to predictably kick the soccer
ball in a bee-line for the goal. Then crossing her arms, cocking
her eyebrow, and then waiting patiently to see how the boy would
react. "Better show your worth b*tch." She teased.
