Zinnia Natter
After her chem lecture finished, Zinnia tried to beat the rush
of students out the door by leaving her books cradled in her
right arm, slinging her backpack over her left shoulder. She
made it partway out the door before her books caught on the door
trimming and tumbled to the floor.
"Come on..." she groaned. "Not today..." She was already having
a rotten day, and now this.
She sighed, moved them as much out of the way that she could and
then bent down to pick them up, opening her backpack and putting
them away properly.
"Stupid door."

It always got a little slow going out the door, but klutzes
always made it worse. Today's klutz was Zinnia, who had
apparently forgotten that gravity worked. And he was
conveniently right behind her. Trent rolled his eyes as her
books tumbled.
"Stupid door," muttered Zinnia, picking up what she'd dropped.
"If the door was sentient, it would've told you it saw that
coming." Trent adjusted the position of the top book. "It was
about to slid off again," he told her matter-of-factly. "I'm
sensing," Trent drew out, moving his hand before him as if
moving away a fog. "I'm sensing that you're not in a good mood.
But then again..." He raised an eyebrow, smirking. "I can
probably count the times I've seen you smile on one hand."

"Stupid door," muttered Zinnia, picking up what she'd dropped,
putting all but two of her books into her backpack as fast as
she could.
"If the door was sentient, it would've told you it saw that
coming." The voice came from behind, and Zinnia nearly dropped
her books again, startled. She managed to keep a hold of her
books, though, and sent a frown towards the speaker, not
speaking as her mind processed everything. Who was it? Trant?
Trent? Oh yes, Trent. She recognized him now-the guy she'd had a
minor crush on before finding out he had a girlfriend.
Trent then adjusted the position of the top book, still in her
hands. "It was about to slide off again," he told her
matter-of-factly.
This drew her into speaking, readjusting the books so she knew
they wouldn't fall out of her arms, irritated. She didn't like
having her personal space invaded without her permission. "No it
wasn't."
"I'm sensing," Trent drew out, moving his hand before him as if
around a crystal ball. "I'm sensing that you're not in a good
mood. But then again..." He raised an eyebrow, smirking. "I can
probably count the times I've seen you smile on one hand."
"Genius, really. Wow." She rolled her eyes, and tried to move
out of the way of traffic. "That's a tad creepy, you know, that
you're keeping track of that." She wanted to explain the reason
for her non-smiling in-class, but she bit her tounge. She didn't
need to explain anything she didn't want to.

Trent then adjusted the position of the top book in Zinnia's
collection. "It was about to slide off again," he told her
matter-of-factly.
Zinnia made that face, that "I'm going to pretend I don't care
about anyone around me" face she made so often. "No it wasn't."
"Yes, it was," he replied, matching her tone evenly.
Wow." Filler words-- the kind of thing he was
pretty certain she did when she wanted to have company but was
too proud to admit it. Not that he particularly cared whether
she got company or not-- Zinnia was icy, sure enough, but she
wasn't an ice queen, so it wasn't as fun. But he did like the
way she valued science. He genuinely liked that, when someone
besides him could understand how fascinating polymers were, and
how freaky it was that margarine was one chemical chain away
from becoming plastic. Of course, it didn't matter any, since
she was the wrong brand of ice.
"Yeah, it's a curse." He fell into step beside her as the
current shifted in the hallway.
"That's a tad creepy, you know, that you're keeping track of
that."
Trent chuckled, shaking his head. "You think I bother keeping
track? That's adorable." He glanced at her, interested in how
her expression might change. "No, it's -- how does the
expression go?-- A fact universally acknowledge. It is a fact
universally acknowledged that Zinnia has a frost around her that
never quite thaws all the way. But hey, that's your business."
Trent shrugged. "I can imagine, though, once the frost thaws,
you'd have one of enigmatic smiles, like Mona Lisa."
"Anyway, onto semi-plastic food smothered in semi-plastic
margarine. Mm-mm, good."

Trent adjusted her books, still in her arms, because, "It was
about to fall again."
Zinnia sent a frown in his direction, not appreciating that he
had intruded into her personal space without permission. "No it
wasn't."
"Yes, it was," he replied, matching her tone evenly. She gave up
on the argument. She was having a bad enough day already.
"Whatever."
Wow." She rolled her eyes.
"Yeah, it's a curse." He fell into step beside her as the
current shifted in the hallway, and she snorted. Curse my ass,
she thought, but let it go, focusing on the 'keeping track of
how many times she smiled' thing.
"That's a tad creepy, you know, that you're keeping track of
that."
Trent chuckled, shaking his head. "You think I bother keeping
track? That's adorable." Now she was a little confused, but
tried not to let it show, waiting for him to continue,
suppressing the blush that had been about to color her cheeks
from having made the assumption it was Trent keeping track. Of
course it wasn't him. He has a girlfriend.
"No,it's-- how does the expression go?-- A fact universally
acknowledged." He was clearly quoting from something, but she
had no idea what. Probably one of the many books she hadn't read
that were considered 'classics'. He continued.
"It is a fact universally acknowledged that Zinnia has a frost
around her that never quite thaws all the way. But hey, that's
your business." Trent shrugged. "I can imagine, though, once the
frost thaws, you'd have one of enigmatic smiles, like Mona
Lisa."
Unwillingly, a smile did spread across her face, chased by a
light blush. She was annoyed for a moment that people thought
her unapproachable, but just shrugged it off after a second. She
was just quiet-it was their fault they never talked to her. She
pulled her books closer to her chest automatically,
protectively, remembering the bullies that had used the same
isolating tactics in middle school, although not quite as
subtly.
"Anyway, onto semi-plastic food smothered in semi-plastic
margarine. Mm-mm, good."
Zinnia wrinkled her nose at the topic of today's class. "Ick.
It's freaky, that is. But kinda cool. If we ever run out of
plastic, all we have to do is figure out how to convert
butter..." she trailed off, already trying to figure out how to
do it in her head. But, of course, returning to the conversation
after a second, realizing that Trent wasn't just going to walk
away.
And there was something tickling at the back of her mind,
something important, but she couldn't remember what it was.
"You're a science concentration, right?" She asked, then kicked
herself mentally. Score one for dumbass questions: goes to
Zinnia!" she thought. No shit he was a science concentration.

"I can imagine, though, once the frost thaws, you'd have one of
enigmatic smiles, like Mona Lisa." She was pretty, in a classic
way, if only she'd smile a bit more often. Normally, she had the
look of someone too deep in thought, or a scowl, if she was in a
particular mood.
The smallest little smile flitted across her face, but even so,
Zinnia made herself smaller. She pulled her books closer to her,
and while it looked like she just wanted to keep them from
falling again, Trent thought it was more instinct-- to make
herself smaller. Girls did that, sometimes, he found-- made
themselves smaller around guys. He'd never figured out exactly
why yet. Maybe Zinnia could give him enlightenment. "Anyway,
onto semi-plastic food smothered in semi-plastic margarine.
Mm-mm, good."
Zinnia wrinkled her nose. "Ick. It's freaky, that is. But kinda
cool. If we ever run out of plastic, all we have to do is figure
out how to convert butter..."
"Zinnia, where were you?" he teased, shaking his head. "It only
works with plant byproducts. In the world of polymers and
plastic, the faker the better. Kind of like Hollywood." He
smirked.
"You're a science concentration, right?"
Trent laughed. Obviously, it was a filler question. Zinnia was
quiet. She probably hated small talk and this was the best she
had. Poor thing. "Nah, I just crash the class for the chicks.
Brainy girls are the hottest." He paused, then clarified, "It's
a compliment, Zinnia."

Zinnia Natter
"I can imagine, though, once the frost thaws, you'd have one of
enigmatic smiles, like Mona Lisa."
She smiled unwillingly, a light blush crawling across her cheeks
rapidly as well. Then she pulled her books in closer,
automatically, remembering bullies who had used similar
isolating techniques. And she was starting to get a weird vibe
from Trent, and she didn't like it.
"Anyway, onto semi-plastic food smothered insemi-plastic
margarine. Mm-mm, good."
Zinnia wrinkled her nose. "Ick. It's freaky, that is. But kinda
cool. If we ever run out of plastic, all we have to do is figure
out how to convert butter..."
"Zinnia, where were you?" he teased, shaking his head. She
frowned. Had she missed something? Given his tone of voice, more
than likely. Now she was starting to dislike Trent. All he
seemed able to do was tell her she'd been wrong or point out her
mistakes. And that niggling sensation at the back of her brain
wouldn't go away, the one that was telling her she should be
careful.
But as she said nothing, Trent continued. "It only works with
plant byproducts. In the world of polymers and plastic, the
faker the better. Kind of like Hollywood." He smirked. She
rolled her eyes. Hollywood, for all its flaws, occasionally got
things right.
"Right. Yeah..." she did have to admit he was right about the
polymer thing.
"You're a science concentration, right?" She said the first
thing that came to mind. She was terrible at small talk, but
they were still moving in the same direction.
Trent laughed. "Nah, I just crash the class for the chicks.
Brainy girls are the hottest."
Zinnia almost snorted out loud, raising her eyebrows instead.
She knew Trent's reputation, or at least what it had been before
the rumor went around that he had a girlfriend. She remained
silent, nothing to say.
"It's a compliment, Zinnia." Trent continued.
She was about to reply when something in her head connected the
dots for her. It must have been the comment about brainy girls
and being pretty.
Trent was, or had been, Sydora's boyfriend. She remembered
asking about it recently and being told something along the
lines of 'he's an asshole' and 'cheating pig' and 'insensitive'.
And assuming they weren't together anymore from the tone of
voice.
Throughout all of this, her mouth had been left open, stupidly,
and she halted suddenly. Trent was a few paces in front of her
by now.
"You're Syd's ex." She stated simply. Her mind was still in
shock. "You're...oh dear." She shut her mouth this time,
wondering how she could have missed it. The shock only kept her
in place long enough to think about shortcuts she could take,
routes to avoid him on the way back, because they lived in the
same dorm. Then she made her way back alone, not stopping, her
books held close to her chest.
Thankfully Syd wasn't there, at least for the time being, so she
locked the door behind her and curled up on her bed, her face
burning with embarrassment. She'd been so wrapped up in herself,
and Trent actually talking to her, that she'd totally ignored
what her brain had been trying to tell her.
Never again, she thought. Never again. She wouldn't trust any
boy again. Even knowing they weren't all like Trent, she would
be suspicious. Even if it was what her sister called an over
reaction. Too many guys with an agenda. She wasn't dumb enough
to think that Trent had wanted her that way, but he might have
if she'd accidentally given him the option.
No more boys. No more distractions.

"You're a science concentration, right?" Zinnia asked. He
wondered what she was thinking about, that she'd say something
so blatantly obvious.
He laughed. "Nah, I just crash the class for the chicks. Brainy
girls are the hottest."
Zinnia made a face, and the problem with Zinnia making a face
was that it could mean half a dozen things. She could be
flattered, or surprised, or confused, or judging him.
"It's a compliment, Zinnia." Trent added, keeping eye contact
with her. And he meant it. She carried with her that classic
type of beauty, but if she embraced it, she could probably be
any kind of beautiful she wanted. He hated to see potential
beauty wasted, hidden behind isolation and anxiety. She probably
didn't get complimented enough, so she didn't know how to take
it. The thought made him smile.
"You're Syd's ex." It was the firs thing she'd said since
staring at him like he'd switched to speaking Latin.
Trent sighed, shaking his head. "Have we really fallen so far as
a society to identify one another only by relationship status? I
think you should add that I'm also a guitarist, an athlete, and
a scientific genius." He stopped in front of her, a smile on his
face as he waited for her argument. He thought she might
protest, or call him out on something, and really, getting a
reaction from her like that would be ideal. He wanted to see her
angry, or at least passionate in some way. Come on, Zinnia. Do
something. I know you have it in you.
"You're...oh dear."
"What?"
Zinnia's mouth snapped shut, and she made a beeline down the
walk, away from him.
"I'm what?" Trent shouted after her. He'd hardly said anything,
and off she went like he'd just asked her to marry him or
something. Trent watched her leave, a look of completely
bewilderment on his face. "Girls are psycho..." he muttered.
I suppose Trent's finished here?

"It's a compliment, Zinnia." Trent added, looking back at her.
"You're Syd's ex." It was the only sensible thing she could
think of saying. She could feel a flush rising in her cheeks,
but ignored it.
Trent sighed, shaking his head. "Have we really fallen so far as
a society to identify one another only by relationship status? I
think you should add that I'm also a guitarist, an athlete, and
a scientific genius."
Well, there was the insensitive part that Syd had talked about.
He clearly wasn't all that upset about it, or at least didn't
seem to be at the moment. But she didn't even see a flicker of
anything in his eyes.
"You're...oh dear."
"What?" He asked, seemingly genuinely confused this time. But
maybe if he thought about it he might figure it out. He did
consider himself a genius, after all. She shut her mouth,
thinking of ways she could get to her dorm while avoiding him.
She didn't want to spend the rest of her walk with him, and she
could feel the blush starting to crawl up her neck deepening.
She left, still trying to figure out alternate paths for the
future and praying that he didn't follow her.
"I'm what?" Trent shouted after her.
'Not my type' or 'my roommate's ex' or 'insensitive' were all
things that crossed Zinnia's mind to say, but one glance behind
her told her that she would only regret trying to explain the
embarrassment she was feeling now. She had hoped her previous
feelings for him had passed at the news of his apparent
commitment, but clearly they hadn't.
And for now she would put a hold on any possible romantic
attachments. Feelings just confused her. And she didn't want to
risk falling for another friends' ex.
Zinnia is done here!
