He was still in the main area of the bookstore, having just
finished moving in and promising his mother and, via phone, his
sister, that he would be visiting as soon as he could. Of course
his sister asked if he'd read anything new since she'd last been
home, but the answer had been no, so he was hunting in the store
for a book she might like to share, that he could maybe give her
for christmas or her birthday. Or just because. It was her
favorite thing, even if she didn't really read most of them.
A couple of books caught his eye, and he moved over, flipping
through them. He'd been wanting to read so many books, mostly
French literature, but sports camps over the summer always left
him too exhausted to pick up even a young adult-oriented novel.
He put one of the books down, and searched out the 'foreign
literature' section. Maybe they'd have something neat today.
"Histoire d'un crime, Conversations with Eternity, Oooh, the
Count of Monte Cristo! That was a neat one... hmm, anymore by
Dumas?" He was mumbling to himself, almost unaware of it. "Oh,
neat. The D'Artagnan Romances... maybe I'll see about those for
       sis... Oh, nevermind, what's this?"
He picked up a book, titled 'The Black Tulip', apparently
written by Alexander Dumas. "Hmm. Maybe I'll get that instead."
He replaced the books he'd collected previously, slightly
haphazardly, and inspected the book closer, reading the
description, then sighing. "I wish I was good enough at French
to read this in the original language, but I guess it'll have to
do." He went through the rest of the shelves disinterestedly,
knowing that he'd found a jewel and wishing he could get more
       than one book.
You just had to promise mother, didn't you..."Just one book per
month, Dox, you know the rule."
"Yeah, until my grades come out and I've aced everything." he
       muttered darkly.

       Corzen Foster-White
Once, there had been something that Corzen loved more than
browsing through piles and piles of books; now, there was
nothing, which is precisely how he ended up crouched in a corner
of the Hummingbird Bookstore just hours after moving in. The
store was silent, save the occasional footsteps or rustles of
crisp, clean pages. The teenager closed the book he was reading
and hugged it to his chest as he stood, his joints cracking and
popping back into place from being hunched over for however
long. He glanced at the clock, sighing heavily as he realized
that he didn't have enough time to scour every section, so he
settled for the Classic Literature section, nestled neatly
       between Foreign and Modern Literature.
He had just reached the shelf that proudly presented all of Jane
Austen's novels, when something caught his attention in the
Foreign Literature section: a gorgeous, leather bound copy of
Cyrano De Bergerac. He stopped for a moment, clearly torn
between the plethora of classics on one side and the lone copy
of Cyrano, before changing directions and moving over to get a
       closer look at the play.
"Original French and all," he mused quietly, his voice laced
with awe as took the book carefully in both hands, "My god, its
beautiful." The other book slid from its place, cradled lovingly
in the crook of one arm, and clatter to the floor, sliding a few
inches across the polished wood floor and coming to a stop just
half an inch from another patron's shoe.
"Oh, dear, I'm sorry." He breathed, his eyes widening slightly.

"Yeah, until my grades come out and I've aced everything." he
muttered darkly, taking his book and slowly moving, still
       reading the back cover.
All of a sudden another book clattered to the floor, sliding a
few inches across the polished wood floor and coming to a stop
right in front of his foot. If he hadn't been quite so engrossed
in the description he might have already passed; but now he
stopped to pick it up and hand it back to the person it belonged
       to.
"Oh, dear, I'm sorry." The kid breathed, looking like a deer
       caught in the headlights.
Dox cracked a smile. "Oh, I'm alright. I think the book might
need a bit of a dusting, though." He held the book out. "May I
       ask what your name is?"
"I'm Paradox, but people usually call me Dox for short." He
       smiled again.

"Oh, dear, I'm sorry." He apologized, his wide eyes trained on
the fallen book before startling a bit as someone handed him the
       object.
"Oh, I'm alright. I think the book might need a bit of a
dusting, though." The person responded, holding out the book,
"May I ask what your name is?"
"I... well, I would say that I didn't see you there," Corzen
started, flushing a bit as he accepted the book from the
stranger, "but that would mean that I just apologized to an
inanimate object." He ducked his head and laughed little,
shaking his head and tucking his books into the crook of one arm
before extending a hand to the boy. "I...um... I'm Corzen. And
       you would be?"
"I'm Paradox, but people usually call me Dox for short." The
stranger-- Dox-- said, smiling charmingly. Corzen sucked his
bottom lip into his mouth, chewing on it lightly and nodding to
       himself.
"Stunning," he murmured, flushing again, "The implications of
your name, I mean. Its rather beautiful, but I'm sure that it
isn't the response you were looking for." Corzen chuckled
silently to himself before dipping his head toward the other
boy's books. "What have you got there?"

His attention was wrested from his book when another one fell at
his feet. He picked up the book, smiling, and handed it back to
the boy who had dropped it, lightly brushing off the apology.
"Oh, I'm alright. I think the book might need a bit of a
dusting, though." he responded, holding out the book, "May I ask
       what your name is?"
"I... well, I would say that I didn't see you there," the boy
started, flushing a bit as he took the book back, "but that
would mean that I just apologized to an inanimate object." He
ducked his head and laughed little, shaking his head and tucking
his books into the crook of one arm, like there was an extra
shelf made just for books. "I...um... I'm Corzen. And you would
       be?"
"I'm Paradox, but people usually call me Dox for short." he
said, smiling at the boy again. It wasn't often he met someone
who appreciated books, let alone his own age.
"Stunning," the boy murmured, then flushed again. "The
implications of your name, I mean. Its rather beautiful, but I'm
sure that it isn't the response you were looking for."
"Honestly, you're the first to truly appreciate it. And I'll
take what compliments I can get. Most people tend to view it as
a burden, but it really isn't. At least not that I've found." He
smiled briefly, wondering at his runaway mouth. Usually people
couldn't get two words out of him, even on good days. "And it's
unique, so what can I say?" Nothing much, because I haven't
actually thought about the implications.... maybe I ought to do
       that one of these days...
Corzen smiled briefly, laughter briefly illuminating his face,
then nodded toward Dox's books. "What have you got there?"
"This? The only book I'm allowed to buy this month, or until
after I get an A on a test of import." He made a face. "My
mother's idea... the title is The..." he'd forgotten the name
already. "The Black Tulip. By Dumas. Not one of his more famous
ones, I guess, but it sounds intriguing enough. Besides, its
Dumas. And I haven't read a thing all summer." Damn sports... He
hesitated slightly, then asked, "What's on your bookshelf?",
nodding towards the book that had just met the floor and the one
that had caused the fall, both tucked securely into the boys'
       elbow by now.
He could feel his shy tendencies creeping up on him, and sighed
inwardly. He thought that doing sports would get rid of them,
but all it had done was make them recede for a little bit. They
       always came back.

"Stunning," Corzen breathed, his flush deepening and crawling
down his neck, "The implications of your name, I mean. Its
rather beautiful, but I'm sure that it isn't the response you
were looking for." He could feel little beads of sweat forming
at the base of his neck and in the dimples in the small of his
       back.
"Honestly, you're the first to truly appreciate it. And I'll
take what compliments I can get. Most people tend to view it as

The boy smiled briefly, "And it's unique, so what can I say?"
Corzen ran his tongue across his bottom lip, wetting the drying
skin and dropping his gaze from the boy's mouth to the collar of
his shirt for the briefest of moments.
"I appreciate the finer things in life," Corzen responded, eyes
flicking back up to meet Dox's gaze, "and words just happen to
be at the top of that very, very short list." He bit down on his
lip briefly before nodding toward the book in the other boy's
hand. "What have you got there?"
"This? The only book I'm allowed to buy this month, or until
after I get an A on a test of import." Dox's face twisted a
little and Corzen took that moment to take a half-step closer,
getting a better glimpse at the cover. "My mother's idea... the
title is The... The Black Tulip. By Dumas. Not one of his more
famous ones, I guess, but it sounds intriguing enough. Besides,
its Dumas. And I haven't read a thing all summer."
"Dumas," he repeated approvingly, shifting his weight to one
foot so that he was about the same height as his companion,
leaning ever so slightly toward the other boy, "Classic. Was
there something else that you were looking at getting?"
"What's on your bookshelf?" Dox asked after a brief pause.
Corzen tipped his head a bit, glancing down at the titles in his
hand, though he really hadn't forgotten them.
"Doctor Sleep by Stephen King," he paused to wet his lips and
look over at Dox through the corner of his eyes, "and Cyrano De
       Bergerac in the original French."

"Cyrano De Bergerac! 'Un baiser, mais à tout prendre,
qu'est-ce?' Cyrano? In French?" It was one of his favorite old
plays, and while he'd never read it in French, he'd read
translations and done some research of his own. "Wow, that's
amazing. Do you read French, then?"
He felt a bit of a flush creeping up his neck, and didn't know
what to make of it, other than excitement.

"So, out of curiosity, what's your favorite book by Dumas?" Dox
started moving towards one of the stairways to one of the
