Verochka Königin
She was in the Gazebo, after classes were done for the day,
working on a small commission from a friend back home. The small
half-formed purse laid on her lap while she made the last
stitches up the side and then checked everything.
"Well, another one done... I hope I don't get too many more this
week." She sighed, and changed her position a bit. There weren't
many comfortable spots in the Gazebo, but it was nice and quiet
today, and the sun didn't shine directly on her face.
She turned to face outwards, sticking her tiny legs through the
rungs and then laid herself back, flinging out her arms
dramatically. "DONE!" she half-yelled, drawing slight attention
her way.
She was in a good mood, it was sunny out, she'd finished all her
work, school and otherwise... the only thing that could have
made the day better was Phoenix showing up in a cute outfit, but
she tried not to dwell on Phoenix too long because eventually
she would always remember Chevy, who put her into a bit of a bad
mood.

Reese Middleton
One of the things about going to a prep school full-time as well
as having a part-time job, unofficially tutoring and a social
life, is that it left one utterly drained at about lunchtime.
Typically he would find an abandoned classroom and snooze there
until he was kicked out, or he would find some quiet place on
one of the rooftops somewhere. But today he had just had no luck
whatsoever in finding a quiet place to relax, and besides, it
was too nice an afternoon to be cooped up inside. He wanted one
of those 'midway through the novel' kind of movie moments, with
the protagonist taking a rejuvinating rest out in a summer-esque
lawn that was unbelievably green and unrealistically void of the
usual bugs and itchy grass-things.
Reese wandered out to the gazebo, a quiet place to sit after
class hours, but found someone already there. Wavy red-hair
caught the sunlight, the angular face fixated on a purse, which
was deftly and expertly being finished beneath her pale fingers.
He paused a moment, watching her, trying to recall whether or
not he knew her name. As he stepped forward to come closer, she
finished the purse, laying back on the floor of the gazebo. She
flung out her arms dramatically as she half-yelled, "DONE!"
"Congrats," he said coyly, head tilted in interest and his hand
resting against the iron-black handrail. "You seem quite proud
of yourself, and I don't blame you. I can't even make a paper
airplane properly."
He scrunched one eye shut, giving her a searching look, one
finger pointing toward her, "Yo-u-u-u're....Vuh....Vuh...
V-something, right? From Germany, with the hot accent. One of
the newish kids on the block, right? I think we met during the
first week or something. But just in case, I'm Reese." He
stepped up fully into the gazebo, ending up behind her and a
little off to the side. "Don't mind me. I'm just here because
school is too noisy, and a man needs his beauty sleep, so don't
let me interrupt your well-earned victory."

She flung out her arms dramatically as she half-yelled, "DONE!"
after finally completing a purse she was making for a friend--a
commission. Suddenly a voice came from behind her, at the
entrance to the Gazebo.
"Congrats," a male voice said smoothly, and a hand showed itself
against the guardrail. "You seem quite proud of yourself, and I
don't blame you. I can't even make a paper airplane properly."
"Oh, it's just a purse for a friend back home." But secretly she
was thrilled at the compliment. Not everyone had that attitude.
She turned around as the boy continued, pointing a finger at her
and looking at her like he was going to find something just by
looking at her.
"Yo-u-u-u're....Vuh....Vuh... V-something, right? From Germany,

just here because school is too noisy, and a man needs his
beauty sleep, so don't let me interrupt your well-earned
victory."
She giggled a little bit. 'Hot accent', huh?
"Ja, ich bin sie." she teased, knowing that he may not
understand actual German. "Yeah, that's me. Hot accent and all.
Thanks. My name is Verochka. Vera for short. And please,
beauty-sleep away!" She gestured to the nearly empty Gazebo.
"But I'll be taking mine right over here, so, I hope a little
noise doesn't keep you up. I've got about five more of these
waiting for me to get started in my room." She made a small
face. Even though they brought in her spending money, doing
purse after purse was getting boring. "Sometimes having a skill
in demand is a pain in the arsch."
She was beginning to like this Reese.

"Congrats," he commented, a smirk on his face as he rested his
hand on the railing of the gazebo. "You seem quite proud of
yourself, and I don't blame you. I can't even make a paper
airplane properly."
"Oh, it's just a purse for a friend back home." But he could see
the proud look in her eyes. Reese made a thoughtful scrunch of
his face, pointing to her as he considered her.
"Yo-u-u-u're....Vuh....Vuh... V-something, right? From Germany,

She giggled a little bit, in that cute way that girls sometimes
did. "Ja, ich bin sie." she teased, and he made a show of
clutching his heart and looking up toward the heavens in
appreciation. "Yeah, that's me. Hot accent and all. Thanks."
"You could be cussing me out in German and it would still be
very, very hot. And in addition, you yourself are quite
beautiful, so it all works out to be very unfair to the rest of
the population."
"My name is Verochka. Vera for short."
He pursed his lips together and snapped his fingers, "A-a-ah!
That's right! Vera! Although I think Verochka sounds a lot more
badass, myself."
"And please, beauty-sleep away!" She gestured to the nearly
empty Gazebo. "But I'll be taking mine right over here, so, I
hope a little noise doesn't keep you up. I've got about five
more of these waiting for me to get started in my room." She
made a face, and he mirrored it with equal distaste. "Sometimes
having a skill in demand is a pain in the arsch."
"Yeaaaah.." he agreed, lying out on the floor next to her,
stetching out. "A total pain in the arsch."
But instead of closing his eyes to sleep, Reese found himself
propping his chin up in one hand, his elbow against the aged
wood, and watching her curiously. She was really very pretty,
especially her long fiery hair, with his curls slightly
disheveled, and reminding him of the main girl from the movie
Brave. "So what got you started in the purse-making business? Or
do you make other amazing things, too, Verochka?" He added a bit
of an over-dramatized accent on her name, as though it was
almost an angry Russian speaking it, and rolling the R too
deliberately. He was hoping to make her smile, because he wanted
to see if it was the kind of room-lighting smile that matched
her fiery hair, or if it would be a softer, quiet smile of pure
German chocolate.

She laughed a bit again. "Badass, huh..." she trailed off,
pleased. Then his words earlier struck her, and she decided
she'd let the poor boy sleep. "Please, beauty-sleep away!" She
gestured to the nearly empty Gazebo. "But I'll be taking mine

She glanced at him suspiciously for a few seconds, trying to
determine if he was being sarcastic or not. She still had a tiny
bit of trouble determining 'sarcasm'.
But instead of closing his eyes to sleep, Reese propped his chin
up in one hand, his elbow against the aged wood, watching her.

She smiled, quite charmed by his saying her name, although it
sounded more Russian than anything. Although, according to her
mother, it really was Russian. Man, he really knows how to
flatter a girl.
"Honestly, I'm not really a purse-maker, per se. I'm wicked good
with a needle, though, or so my friends and bosses tell me. I
try to keep to small things during the school year, though,
because class projects take a lot of my time. I think this year
they want the fashion department to put on a show, with each of
us doing at least three outfits. And by the end of the semester,
too. Of course, the show should also include the other things
we've made. It only happens every other year, so there are
enough outfits to wear, that are quality made." She stopped
running her mouth so much, hoping she wasn't boring him.
"Sorry. I talk about fashion a lot. What do you do that's got
you so tuckered out?" she asked, flipping onto her stomach so
she could see him properly.

"Sometimes having a skill in demand is a pain in the arsch."
"Yeaaaah.."he agreed, lying out on the floor next to her,
stretching out. "A total pain in the arsch." She looked over at
his suspiciously, as though she was trying to determine whether
or not he was making fun of her. In a way, he supposed he was.
But certainly not in a serious way that took more than a
moment's consideration. Bypassing the chance to end the
conversation and take his nap, he propped himself up and watched
her curiously. "So what got you started in the purse-making
business? Or do you make other amazing things, too, Verochka?"
He added a bit of an over-dramatized accent on her name, as
though it was almost an angry Russian speaking it, and rolling
the R too deliberately.
She smiled, and he mentally patted himself on the bat for the
horrible attempt at an accent that caused the smile. "Honestly,
I'm not really a purse-maker, per se. I'm wicked good with a

suddenly, and Reese had, as some point or another, begun to grin
with amusement at the excitement that crept into her voice once
given the chance to chatter on about what was apparently one of
her favorite topics.
“Friends and bosses, eh? And taking parts in shows? You're one
of those lovably insufferable kids that accomplishes their
career goals before losing all their baby teeth, aren't you?” he
said, hoping that the mischievous smirk and playful lilt of his
voice was enough to let her know that he wasn't in any way
serious about his remarks.
"Sorry. I talk about fashion a lot. What do you do that's got
you so tuckered out?" she asked, flipping onto her stomach so
she could see him properly. He liked that. She had, in her own
way, shown interest not just in her words, but also her body
language. A girl who wanted to just hang out, just because she
was interested.
“Naw, it's fine,” he reassured her, giving a slight gesture of
dismissal with his free hand before letting it return to rest on
his hip. “I've just been busy with boring social stuff, working
part-time and kinda-sorta-tutoring, in addition to homework and
having one of those energy-sucking Enhancements. So I guess just
the usual, as far as students here go. I suppose I just prefer
some quiet moments occasionally...you know..like this...” he
gestured toward the nearly-vacant gazebo, quiet enough to hear
wind in the trees and some dumb birds squawking away as they
scavenged for food and attention. “Not to go all Robert Frost on
you or anything, but it's kinda nice to sleep outside, with
nature and all. I'm not a creative person, so us Untalents like
to just sleep, I suppose. Because at least we're good at
dreaming.” He smiled warmly at her, wriggling his eyebrows up
and down in rapid succession. “What got you interested in the
crafting arts? If 'crafting arts' is the right term and all.”

"Of course, the show should also include the other things we've
made. It only happens every other year, so there are enough

wanting to bore him. But he was smiling, so she figured that she
hadn't.
At least not yet. And she would try not to.
“Friends and bosses, eh? And taking parts in shows? You're one
of those lovably insufferable kids that accomplishes their
career goals before losing all their baby teeth, aren't you?” he
said. The mischievous smirk and playful lilt of his voice was
enough to let her know that he wasn't in any way serious about
his remarks, but her smile did falter a bit, anger and a tinge
of sadness rising instead. She nodded, trying to force a smile.
Mostly it was the memory of her ex saying virtually the same
words, but with much more venom and a different coice of
adjectives to go along with it. That was then, Vera, she told
herself, hitching a smile back on her face. This is much
different.
"Sorry. I talk about fashion a lot. What do you do that's got
you so tuckered out?" she asked, wanting to know more about this
lovely, handsome peer of hers, flipping onto her stomach so she
could see him properly.
“Naw, it's fine,” he reassured her, giving a slight gesture of
dismissal with his free hand before letting it return to rest on
his hip. “I've just been busy with boring social stuff, working

gestured toward the nearly-vacant gazebo, quiet enoughto hear
wind in the trees and some dumb birds squawking away as they
scavenged for food and attention. She agreed, it was quite nice.
It was why she was outside in the first place.
“Not to go all Robert Frost on you or anything, but it's kinda
nice to sleep outside, with nature and all. I'm not a creative
person, so us Untalents like to just sleep, I suppose. Because
at least we're good at dreaming.” He smiled warmly at her,
wriggling his eyebrows up and down in rapid succession, causing
her to raise an eyebrow of her own, not quite sure of what to
make of it. “What got you interested in the crafting arts? If
'crafting arts' is the right term and all.”
"Just call it fashion. Everyone else does." She hesitated
slightly, not really sure what he would say about her original
inspiration. "Honestly, I just saw this one dress on sale, in a
used clothes shop. I was probably only seven. I must have asked
my mom to get it for me, even though it was made for adults -and
actually I probably would never have fit in it anyway- but she
wouldn't. So I decided right then and there that I would make
myself a dress that fabulous, even if it took me the rest of my
life. I'd always played dress-up, according to my parents, but
after that I 'be ame a seamstress', as my dad always said. It
took me three years to make my first dress right, because I was
still so young. But after that...." she shrugged. "It actually
fit, so I kept at it, and eventually I just stopped doing other
things." And then you stopped caring about anything else, said a
small, vile voice in the back of her mind, reminding her of what
she'd given up for her abilities already. People included... She
tried to ignore it.
"Of course, my parents don't really want me to have decided on
my life's calling yet, so between them and not being allowed to
leave campus, I only get to work when I'm in Germany, but I do
small things to pass the time and keep from getting too rusty
while I'm here, and as a bonus, sometimes make a few extra
Euros. Or dollars. Whichever." She rolled her eyes, because
she'd had this argument over and over with her parents, and she
wasn't going to change her mind for them.
She kept forgetting what denomination she had to use, besides
which, some of her commissions WERE from friends back home.

"Just call it fashion. Everyone else does." She hesitated
slightly, seemingly unsure of herself and how much she should
'bare open' to this near-stranger. "Honestly, I just saw this
one dress on sale, in a used clothes shop. I was probably only
seven. I must have asked my mom to get it for me, even though it
was made for adults -and actually I probably would never have
fit in it anyway- but she wouldn't. So I decided right then and

as my dad always said. It took me three years to make my first
dress right, because I was still so young. But after that...."
she shrugged. "It actually fit, so I kept at it, and eventually
I just stopped doing other things."
Reese nodded, feeling as though she wasn't quite done yet, and
waiting for her to continue. This was lifelong dream stuff right
here, and that was not to be rudely interrupted. As Verochka
spoke, he began to long to have a 'lifelong dream' of his own.
Was he passionate about anything like that? Enough to dedicate
years and years of his life to? To argue and disagree with his
parents over? He didn't think he had anything - he was 'Just
Reese'.
Euros. Or dollars. Whichever." She rolled her eyes, undeterred.
Reese watched her for a long moment before speaking, working his
jaw as he considered her. "I really envy you, Verochka. In a
good way, of course. But it sounds like you really know what you
want to do with your life, you know? Most of us stupid kids at
this stupid school are just getting by on the day-to-day, right?
We don't have any idea where we're going, but you do. And I
think that's pretty cool." He realized he was getting kind of
deep and personal for a girl who was sewing purses and making
small talk with him, so he placed his hand on his chest a little
defensively and added, "If you don't mind my saying, of course!"
Reese replaced his hand on his hip and smiled up at her. "You're
really something....anyways, what else do you do with your spare
time?"

"It took me three years to make my first dress right, because I
was still so young. But after that...." she shrugged. "It
actually fit, so I kept at it, and eventually I just stopped
doing other things." He had actually asked what had been her
inspiration behind dressmaking, rather than just assuming about
it. It was very sweet. She did hope that he wouldn't be too
jealous of her. That was usually the next place people went,
especially when they didn't have their own dream.
Euros. Or dollars. Whichever." She rolled her eyes at the
thought of her parents trying to change her mind about her
career.
Reese watched her for a long moment before speaking, making her
a little uncomfortable. "I really envy you, Verochka. In a good
way, of course. But it sounds like you really know what you want
to do with your life, you know? Most of us stupid kids at this
stupid school are just getting by on the day-to-day, right? We
don'thave any idea where we're going, but you do. And I think

lightened the speech a bit, "If you don't mind my saying,of
course!"
"Not at all!" She replied, hitching another false smile onto her
face, not quite meeting his eyes. Except for the last sentence,
it was exactly what her ex had said during their biggest fight.
And Vera had ignored the tone, which had spelled the doom for
both her longest and most intimate relationship. She was still
trying not to let it bother her, but Reese just kept reminding
her of it. Not really in a bad way, but enough.
Reese smiled up at her. "You're really something....anyways,what
else do you do with your spare time?"
"Oh, not much, to be honest. Have fun, hang out with friends,
meet handsome strangers in the Gazeebo. The normal stuff." This
time her smile was real. "Surely you do something worth
mentioning, or at least have a passion of some sort, Reese, I
can't imagine you don't." She wanted to know more about this
handsome stranger that kept paying her compliments. And she
wanted to hear him talk about something he was passionate about.
"Its only fair that you tell me your life story now." She
wiggled a little with exaggerated excitement.
