Sydora Reynalds
Sydora wandered into the common room with her head held high, a
smile painted on her lips, and her stomach quivering nervously.
She hated with all her being that she was still a sophomore, but
she wasn't looking to the questions that her "tutor" might ask.
'So, what happened that you're still a sophomore?' What would
she say to that? 'Oh, I had a baby... or I think it was a baby,
it might have been a lizard, I didn't get to see it.' She shook
her head, rolling her eyes at the ridiculous thought and sliding
into one of the empty seats. There was a large part of her that
was thrilled to see the room empty, the part of her that
couldn't study with people talking around her, but something
tugged at the pit of her stomach at the thought of being
completely alone with some guy she knew nothing about. She
sighed heavily and pulled her notebook out of her backpack and
checked her phone. Maybe this Reese guy wouldn't show? She
wouldn't be all that disappointed.

Reese Middleton
He knew he had met this 'Syd' girl at least once before, but he
couldn't remember where, and he wasn't sure if they had had a
good impression of each other. Ah, well. We can re-meet each
other today. He slipped his cell phone back into his pocket and
glanced around the study room, just as a leggy brunette sashayed
her way in and sat down at a nearby table. He watched her for a
long moment, trying to figure out just what seemed so off about
her. She flopped down and pulled out her cell phone, her face
difficult to read. Was she agitated? Was she ambivalent?
Whatever the expression was, he could better read it from closer
up. His eyesight wasn't so perfect, after all. He picked up his
backpack and slung it over one shoulder, coming over to stop at
her table, one hand with his fingertips lightly brushing the
surface of the wood as he smiled down at her. "Hey, there. You
wouldn't happen to be Syd, would you?" After a pause, he held
out his hand to her, "I'm Reese, Katie's friend." One thick
eyebrow lifted in an expression of half-questioning himself as
he queried, "I thi-i-ink I met you once at some lunch or
something? Haha, sorry..my memory isn't so great, but I think
I'd remember a face like yours." He smiled, wanting to add a
little more to that, but reining himself in, just barely. After
a momentary debate in his mind, he sat down next to her, tossing
his notebook and pencil case onto the table. "Okay, so for
starter's, what seems to be the problem area?" He was curious
why someone who appeared to have herself all together would need
tutoring, but he would be kind of awkward to ask, wouldn't it?

She glanced down at her phone, half hoping that Reese wouldn't
show, but then again, she really didn't want to be behind a
grade for the rest of her school career. Her eyes flicked up
automatically as she heard movement beside her. An attractive
boy moved toward her, backpack slung over one shoulder and
fingers resting lightly on the table top.
"Hey, there. You wouldn't happen to be Syd, would you?" She
quirked an eyebrow before leaning forward, chin propped up on
one hand as her gaze wandered down his body and back up. He
really was quite attractive and somewhat familiar, she felt a
real smirk tug at her lips.
"I might be," she responded, looking up at him through her
lashes, "I'm hoping you happen to be Reese? Because I'd wouldn't
mind spending then next hour or so looking at you." He extended
a hand and she looked at it for a second, before slipping her
much smaller hand into his.
"I'm Reese, Katie's friend." She smiled up at him and squeezed
his fingers a bit, as the angle was a bit awkward for her to try
and shake his hand.
"I was hoping you'd say that." She narrowed her eyes at him a
bit as she slipped her hand out of his, "I've seen you
before..."
"I thi-i-ink I met you once at some lunch or something? Haha,
sorry..my memory isn't so great, but I think I'd remember a face
like yours." He said, one eyebrow raised and a smile on his
lips.
"That would be it," She said with a nod, "You were the... very
attractive boy at the end of the table." He slid into the chair
next to her, tossing his notebook and pencil onto the table.
"Okay, so for starter's, what seems to be the problem area?"
Smile widening a bit, she felt her stomach muscles relax a bit
and her nerves settle some.
"Honestly? I'm a seventeen year old sophomore, everything is so
boring. The only thing I even half-way care about is chem and I
think Dr. Ramsey is about ready to skin me alive." She laughed a
bit and shook her head, "So I will happily listen to anything
you want to teach me."

"Hey, there. You wouldn't happen to be Syd, would you?" She
quirked an eyebrow before leaning forward, propped her chin in
her hand and giving him a not-so-subtle once over. Apparently he
passed, because a smirk crawled across her face and made its
home there.
"I might be," she responded, "I'm hoping you happen to be Reese?
Because I'd wouldn't mind spending then next hour or so looking
at you." Reese let out a chuckle, giving a slightly dramatic
little bow at the compliment. Then he extended a hand to her,
then felt a bit weird about it as she hesitated to take it. Did
people not shake hands where she was from? He had expected this
to be one of those almost-stranger tutoring sessions, but Syd
was making it clear that there was a much more complicated
atmosphere than that. She finally took his hand, and he smiled.
"I'm Reese, Katie's friend." She smiled up at him and squeezed
his fingers a bit, and he wondered at how he hand could feel so
small and delicate in his. He had inherited his father's
sizable, well-proportioned hands, without the long bony fingers
or anything like that. But Syd's hands were definitely smaller
and more feminine.
"I was hoping you'd say that." Reese arched one interested
eyebrow at that. Well, I was hoping the same, so I guess we're
even. Her hand fell slowly away as her eyes narrowed in attempt
to collect a memory, "I've seen you before..."
"I thi-i-ink I met you once at some lunch or something? Haha,
sorry..my memory isn't so great, but I think I'd remember a face
like yours." He said, one eyebrow raised and a smile on his
lips.
"That would be it,"[b] she said with a nod, [b]"You were the...
very attractive boy at the end of the table."
"I was also the one confused as to why we had invited a model to
come sit with us," he winked back, then opted for a seat next to
her, as opposed to across the table. He tossed his pencil case
and notebook out, a gesture for getting down to business. "Okay,
so for starter's, what seems to be the problem area?"
"Honestly? I'm a seventeen year old sophomore, everything is so
boring. The only thing I even half-way care about is chem and I
think Dr. Ramsey is about ready to skin me alive." She laughed a
bit and shook her head, "So I will happily listen to anything
you want to teach me."
"Dr. Ramsey is a bit of a nut-job, if you ask my honest opinion.
But he's a brilliant guy, so what can you do?" He wondered if
her 'boredom' was the cause of her being a seventeen year old
sophomore. But she didn't seem the type to get held back for bad
grades. Maybe there had been an accident though, so he felt
forbidden to ask. In the meanwhile, an obviously attractive girl
had been set up to be tutored by him, and she obviously found
him attractive right back. What was there to be concerned about?
He made a mental note to do something nice for Katie later on.
"How about we start in whatever you feel the most confused or
bored about? And then we can end with the chemistry which you
half-way care about." He tilted his head, smirking devilishly as
he added, "Although I have to admit, I'm a little
disappointed..." He chuckled, pausing before completing the
though, his voice deepening. "I happen to think chemistry..."
here he raised his eyebrows just slightly, indicating emphasis,
"Is very important. But you've either got it, or you don't, you
know?"

drift down his body again, "You were the... very attractive boy

"I was also the one confused as to why we had invited a model to

her head a little, a smile playing on her lips.
"Oh, you flatter me." She responded, batting her eyelashes
playfully as he slid into the seat next to her and dropped his
notebook on the table.
"Okay, so for starter's, what seems to be the problem area?"

response, idly tracing circles on the table top with her finger.
"He is brilliant," she agreed.
"How about we start in whatever you feel the most confused or

half-way care about." He smiled devilishly and she quirked an
eyebrow, leaning in a bit closer to him. "Although I have to

smirked a little as his voice deepened, "I happen to think
chemistry..." She swallowed, gaze dropping to his lips before
flicking back up, "Is very important. But you've either got it,
or you don't, you know?"
"Is that so?" she asked softly, chewing on her bottom lip.
"Maybe you'll have to show me just how important it can be?" And
with that, she pulled back teasingly, flipping open her notebook
and cocking her head to the side.
"What's your strongest subject, love? Remember, I'm behind a
whole year. I'm sure you could teach me a thing or two in any
given subject."

"How about we start in whatever you feel the most confused or
bored about? And then we can end with the chemistry which you
half-way care about." He smiled devilishly and she quirked an
eyebrow, leaning in a bit closer to him. "Although I have to
admit, I'm a little disappointed..."
Their eyes met, and Reese felt the need to push her just a
little more with the flirtiness. It was getting fun, and a voice
at the back of his mind said that there was a potential for much
more in the realm of physics if he nudged her just enough. Did
he want that with her?
History had taught him well that nothing came as easy as he
would hope. Even if he had things all together and didn't need
to emotionally lean on people, that most humans came with their
own baggage. She wouldn't fall into bed with him unless there
was something she wanted from it. He knew women a little more
than that. On the other hand, there was always the possibility
of having fun and then breaking away...And that was what she was
offering to him, even if she wasn't aware herself of a facade.
He met her gaze evenly, his voice deepening. "I happen to think
chemistry..." She swallowed, gaze dropping to his lips before
flicking back up, "Is very important. But you've either got it,
or you don't, you know?"
"Is that so?" she asked softly, chewing on her bottom lip. As if
that was a subtle sign. It was just like in the movies - this
would be the scene in black in white or technicolor, where the
detective with the heavy accent would be sitting at his desk and
the leggy blond would be dangling her legs on either side of him
while sitting on his desk, tugging at his tie and pouting her
painted red lips in a seductive fashion. It was the same scene,
different colors. No girl just chewed on her lip like that
without communicating. And Reese kind of hated how he knew that.
He wished he was more oblivious to her movements, but how could
one ignore the obvious? "Maybe you'll have to show me just how
important it can be?" And with that, she pulled back teasingly,
flipping open her notebook and cocking her head to the side, as
if she hoped that she was leaving him feeling anxious.
I think you underestimate me, Ms. Marilyn Monroe.
"What's your strongest subject, love? Remember, I'm behind a
whole year. I'm sure you could teach me a thing or two in any
given subject."
"Mmm..." he hummed non-chalantly, reaching into his bag and
pulling out the history textbook that was used for both their
grades. "I'm good at social studies and history. I get good
marks in math, but only because one of my best friends is a math
whiz, and I get decent marks in everything else. So let's start
with history, shall we?"

Sydora Reynalds
"Is that so?" she asked softly, chewing on her bottom lip.
"Maybe you'll have to show me just how important it can be?"
Trent popped into her mind briefly, but so did the pretty blonde
that she saw seeking out of his room that morning. Something
tugged at her stomach, like she should feel guilty when she
was-- what was she doing with Trent? What relationship status do
you tag onto someone who has been sleeping with other girls and
runs away when you try to really talk? She willed away the
feeling of guilt with the slightest of smiles; they're days
together were numbered, she just had to figure out how to end
the whole thing without it getting nasty.
She pulled back teasingly, flipping open her notebook and
tilting her head a bit. "What's your strongest subject, love?
Remember, I'm behind a whole year. I'm sure you could teach me a
thing or two in any given subject." She lifted her eyes to watch
him intently, subconsciously catching her bottom lip between her
teeth again. He stirred up something honestly flirtatious,
something playful inside of her; it wasn't the first time that
she felt the inexplicable rush of real emotion, it'd been there
with both Clarence and Silas as well. It was the way she felt
insecure, like this boy was teetering on the top of the wall she
had so carefully constructed, that made her smile.
"Mmm..." he hummed as she watched him reach down and retrieve a
book from his bag. "I'm good at social studies and history. I
get good marks in math, but only because one of my best friends
is a math whiz, and I get decent marks in everything else. So
let's start with history, shall we?"
"History it is," she agreed with a soft smile, scratching
something down at the top of her paper.
For a few minutes, Reese's voice distracted her from just how
much she hated U.S. History, until suddenly it didn't. She knew
British history like the back of her hand, she always been so
good at it, but U.S. History was so different that it made her
head spin. She didn't want to talk about the constitution or the
President or...
"All that trouble to get Washington into office and now everyone
discounts what he says?" Her accent thickened the more
frustrated she got, causing her to cringe a bit. "I mean,
seriously, he says not to use a party system and then somewhere
along the line some goes thinks it is a good idea anyway? And
then American complain about who's in office." She shook her
head, trying to keep her cool. She was getting frazzled, very
openly frazzled, which meant that Reese was well on his way to
the special place where she kept Clarence and Silas.
"U.S. History is so frustrating." she said with a sigh, "I mean,
ask me about the Queen or the Elizabethan Era and I could go on
for hours."

After their introductions had finished, Reese turned their
attentions toward U.S. History. For awhile, he had her
attention, but as was to be expected, her eyes began to glaze
over at points, and he had to fight hard to phrase things in a
way that kept them interesting yet informative enough for them
to move on. In all honesty, he was getting bored of going over
last year's material, too. It didn't take them long to wish the
dull part was over. If he was more of an academic sort, he would
have more motivation to keep her interested. As it was, he was
just happy at any comment from her that showed that she actually
retained anything he was talking about, much less understood it.
"All that trouble to get Washington into office and now everyone
discounts what he says?" Her voice picked up an almost
aggravated sound, as if she was gaining some kind of accent.
Reese smiled at her....frustration? Confusion? "I mean,
seriously, he says not to use a party system and then somewhere
along the line some goes thinks it is a good idea anyway? And
then American complain about who's in office."
"Welcome to U.S. History," he chuckled, "Where nothing makes
sense and the only rule is to not follow the rules, unless it
means a cut in your paycheck. But we've had some strong,
sensible guys - and by 'guys', I mean both male and female, just
to clarify that I'm no misogynist - that come along, and gets
popular. And then he asks people to actually do some work and
everyone leaves him in the dust. The best way to get your way in
the long run and make real change seems to be having some kind
of leverage, and people thrive on that. Always a push and a
pull, a give and a take, you know? Hahaha...It's like that quote
from All The President's Men... 'When you’ve got ‘em by the
balls, their hearts and minds will follow'."
"U.S. History is so frustrating." she said with a sigh, "I mean,
ask me about the Queen or the Elizabethan Era and I could go on
for hours."
"Oh really?" he queried, a laugh at his lips. "That's funny,
because I was always frustrated as hell at the idea of trying to
remember which Elizabeth, Henry or Edward we're talking about.
Can't they be a little more creative with their kids' names? I
mean, jeez..."

"All that trouble to get Washington into office and now everyone

wrinkled her nose a bit. "I mean, seriously, he says not to use

"Welcome to U.S. History," she desperately wanted to run her
fingers through her hair, but she couldn't let him just how
aggravated the subject made her. "Where nothing makes sense and

"It is really sad just how true that rings." She said with a
frown, before shrugging one shoulder. "Good movie though." She
looked over her notes again, giving up and running a hand
through her hair. "U.S. History is so frustrating." she said
with a sigh, "I mean, ask me about the Queen or the Elizabethan

"Oh really?" he asked, sounding as if he might laugh. "That's

kids' names? I mean, jeez..." She smiled over at him and closed
her notebook, turning her body to face him.
"It's tradition." she started softly, "I mean, I'm sure you
already knew that, but tradition is very important to us." The
American facade slipped away and her voice was rich with her
natural accent. "Naturally, that means that we don't enjoy
change all that much, but it tends to work politically for the
most part; probably because what the Queen says is law, not
something the next bloke can discount at will."
She looked back over at her notebook and wrinkled her nose,
shaking her head a bit. "I motion for a study break or, at the
very least, I change in subject to something more... universal.
Though, really, if anything is going to hold me back, it'll be
history. I'm not entire sure why it never crossed my mind that I
was enrolling somewhere that the learning system is very
different compared to home."
