       Sydora Reynalds
Sydora was jostled awake by the cab coming to a halt outside of
Albert Hall, the breaks squealing and whining. She blinked a few
times to clear the haze from her vision and cleared her throat.
"How much do I owe you?" she asked, her English accent thick
from exhaustion. The driver rattled off a number, smiling softly
over at her as she handed him the proper amount.
"You're a long ways from home, aren't you, kiddo?" He commented
as he tucked the bills away. She nodded, slipping her wallet
back into her purse and gathering up her jacket from beside her.
"You could say that." She replied quietly.
"Need some help with your luggage? You look like you're awfully
tuckered out and this old man still has a few good years left in
him." The man offered, unbuckling his seat belt.
"That would be lovely, thank you." She said, smiling tiredly
over at him and opening her door. The driver met her at the back
and popped the trunk, removing her two suitcases and handing her
the remaining backpack, before following her up to the door. The
clock chimed 9 o'clock as the pair entered the lobby and made
their way over to the check-in desk.
"You have a blessed day, Miss." the driver said, patting her
lightly on the shoulder before tipping his hat in her general
direction and exiting the lobby. She glanced back at him,
nodding slightly as the worker behind the desk slid her a stack
of papers and a pen. The paperwork didn't take nearly as long as
it had last year and she was pleased to have her key in her hand
within 20 minutes. She moved all her luggage into the elevator
and pressed the '3' button impatiently. The elevator ride was
quiet and smooth, just as she remembered and the doors hummed
open on the third floor to reveal the bright white hallway. It
took a bit for her struggle down the empty hallway with her
backs, but she let out a relieved sigh when she finally stopped
in front of her door and unlocked it, pushing it open softly.
"Finally," she muttered, dragging her suitcases over to the bed
closest to the bathroom and closing her eyes. It wasn't long
before she set up her stereo, cranking it up a bit as she began
       unpacking.

       Zinnia Natter
"Tara, no, I will not come home this weekend! It's the first
weekend of school!" she almost snapped at her sister over the
phone. "Yes, I know-- Oh, Tara, you know I don't know any of
your friends that well, you're just trying to get me home."
Zinnia stopped at the bottom of the stairs and groaned. Her
medium-sized suitcase was just a bit too wide to get through the
doorway. "Listen, Tara, I need to finish moving in, ok? I'll
call you back later. Maybe. Tell mom and dad I say hi. No, Tara,
you may NOT come visit me this weekend either...." Rolling her
eyes, she backtracked to the elevator and glanced at her paper.
       311. Not so bad. Hopefully she'd have a decent roommate this
       year.
After she got off the elevator, she opened the door and looked
at the room numbers. Following them down the hallway first, she
noticed the music getting louder as she got closer. After
realizing that her room was indeed the source of the noise, she
       sighed.
Thank god I got noise-cancelling headphones last semester...
Loud ex-roommates were still good for something, it turned out.
She felt her phone buzz, but ignored it, knocking on the door to
let her roommate know she was coming in, then opened the door.
"Uh, hi..." Her natural shyness kicked in immediately. "I'm
Zinnia." She held out her left hand, hoping the loose folds on
her jacket would conceal her oddly shaped right arm. Damn
doctors hadn't set it correctly... or something. She didn't
remember very well, as it was years ago now and she'd been on
lots of painkillers for a while.

       Sydora Reynalds
Sydora blinked hard and pulled her hair into a neat bun on top
of her head, fanning herself lightly as she looked around the
room to see what all she had left to put away. There were
bonuses to living thousands of miles away from home, but packing
and unpacking definitely weren't on that list. She'd had to pack
nine months worth of keepsakes and clothing which resulted in
her having two suitcases and her backpack to sort out all before
her roommate arrived. It wasn't that she was an antisocial
person, but she wasn't ready to go from saying goodbye to her
family at the airport straight into an eight--almost nine--hour
flight from London to New York and then unpack both her and her
       roommate's stuff.
"Uh, hi... I'm Zinnia." came a quiet voice behind her, causing
her to jump slightly and press her hand over her heart.
"Oh my god, you scared the shit out of me!" she shrieked, moving
to sit on the edge of her bed and click off the music. She took
a few breaths to calm her racing heart before plastering on her
best smile and looking over at Zinnia. "I'm sorry, I'm just a
little jumpy. I'm Sydora, but you can call me Syd, most everyone
else does." She ignored the girl's extended hand as she had know
intention of showcasing her currently quaking limbs to her
roommate. She bit down on the tip of her tongue and sighed
slightly, maintaining her smile with practiced ease.
"I hope you don't have the intention of using the bathroom
before 6," she commented, arching one perfectly shaped eyebrow.
"I have the bathroom from four to six in the morning and, yes, I
do need two hours to get ready. If you can remember that and
stay on your own side of the room, then we will get along great.
As for everything else, you can have as much space in the
mini-fridge as you want once it gets her and the microwave is
free game. I didn't buy a coffee pot because there is a cafe
downstairs, so you won't have to worry about me using it if you
buy one." She glanced around the space and sighed lightly.
"Also, I am a bit jet-lagged and plan to have a rest when I am
done putting my things away, so it would be positively lovely if
you could keep it down. Thanks." Her smile became a bit more
plastic as she turned away and tossed her folded blanket to the
       head of the bed.

       Zinnia Natter
She felt her phone buzz, but ignored it, knocking on the door to
let her roommate know she was coming in, then opened the door.
"Uh, hi..." Her natural shyness kicked in immediately. "I'm
Zinnia." She held out her left hand, hoping the loose folds on
her jacket would conceal her oddly shaped right arm.
Apparently it was the wrong moment. "Oh my god, you scared the
shit out of me!" her roommate shrieked, moving to turn the music
off. Then she turned back to Zinnia, who had shrunk back into
the doorway when the girl screamed. After a few moments, her
heartrate returned back to normal and she returned her attention
to the girl, who was now wearing a smile that seemed far to
bright to be real, given the decibel she had just screamed at.
"I'm sorry, I'm just a little jumpy. I'm Sydora, but you can
call me Syd, most everyone else does." Zinnia looked up with a
bit of surprise at her roommate's accent. She hadn't expected to
be roomed with one of the international students this year,
although she didn't mind. After a bit she dropped her hand, when
it was clear Sydora wouldn't be shaking it.
"I hope you don't have the intention of using the bathroom
before 6," she continued, with the air of having given this
spiel before. "I have the bathroom from four to six in the
morning and, yes, I do need two hours to get ready. If you can
remember that and stay on your own side of the room, then we
       will get along great."
Zinnia almost rolled her eyes at that. Even though she wore
make-up, she didn't wear quite that much. She did know that some
people did more than make-up, though, so she didn't say
       anything.
"As for everything else, you can have as much space in the
mini-fridge as you want once it gets her and the microwave is
free game. I didn't buy a coffee pot because there is a cafe
downstairs, so you won't have to worry about me using it if you
       buy one."
"Uh. I don't drink coffee, but thanks." She moved more into the
room, letting the door shut behind her as the other girl
       continued.
"Also, I am a bit jet-lagged and plan to have a rest when I am
done putting my things away, so it would be positively lovely if
you could keep it down. Thanks."
"Whatever you say." she mumbled, not really paying attention
anymore. She focused on unpacking her stuff silently, shoving
her one suitcase under the bed and arranging her clothes as she
did everywhere she went. The one picture she had of her and her
sister went on her bedside table.
She wasn't sure what she thought of her roommate quite yet,
other than a slightly stuck up British chick. Hopefully the
       semester would prove her wrong.

       Sydora Reynalds
She watched the blonde closely through slightly narrowed eyes.
They'd known each other all of two minutes and Sydora was
absolutely positive that Zinnia would be the perfect roommate.
Zinnia was timid and complacent, which translated to one thing
in the brunettes mind: they were would be staying out of each
       other's business.
"Also, I am a bit jet-lagged and plan to have a rest when I am
done putting my things away, so it would be positively lovely if
you could keep it down. Thanks." She informed the blonde with a
       tight smile and perky voice.
"Whatever you say." came the mumbled, almost annoyed reply.
Maybe her first calculation was off, maybe Zinnia wasn't
complacent... well, then she'd have to insure a distant
relationship another way. The brunette slid her books into place
and tucked away a couple of pairs of clothes before moving to
lean against the wall between their beds.
"Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, here are the
ground rules," Sydora started, her tone snarky and her eyes
focused just behind the blonde's head, "Rule one: my boyfriend
lives down the hall, when he's in here, you're not. Rule two: I
like my music, if you don't then you can put on headphones or
use the study room. Rule three: Don't touch my stuff. Rule four:
You want to take a phone call after I'm bed? Then do it in the
hallway. Rule five: Remember that this was my room last year,
you're the new one here. Okay? Okay." Sydora flashed another
tight smile at the girl before moving over to the bathroom and
       shutting the door behind her.

OOC: Assuming there is an RA here, correct me if I'm wrong and
       I'll fix it. BIC:
       Zinnia Natter
So far, her impression of Sydora was that she was a bit stuck up
but generally nice. She hoped that she might actually make
friends with her, though it might take a little while.
"Also, I am a bit jet-lagged and plan to have a rest when I am
done putting my things away, so it would be positively lovely if
you could keep it down. Thanks."
Ok, now that would get on her nerves. But she figured she'd let
this one slide--it was a long flight from England, she was sure,
and she didn't want to antagonize the girl too early on in the
       semester.
"Whatever you say." She mumbled, almost annoyed, but not really
paying attention anymore. She focused on unpacking her stuff
silently, avoiding eye contact, shoving her one suitcase under
the bed and arranging her clothes as she did everywhere she
went. The one picture she had of her and her sister went on her
       bedside table.
"Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, here are the
ground rules," Sydora started, her tone now snarky, and Zinnia's
attention was caught immediately. If she only hated one thing,
it was people who just assumed she was a pushover from her quiet
nature and tried to take advantage of that. It had been part of
the reason for her getting bullied so much back in middle
school: she'd been seen as an easy target because she was quiet
       and didn't play sports.
And here I thought things had changed...
"Rule one: my boyfriend lives down the hall, when he's in here,
you're not. Rule two: I like my music, if you don't then you can
put on headphones or use the study room. Rule three: Don't touch
my stuff. Rule four: You want to take a phone call after I'm
bed? Then do it in the hallway. Rule five: Remember that this
was my room last year, you're the new one here. Okay? Okay."
Zinnia's temper, usually quiet and small, flared up at Sydora's
tone. "No, it's not 'OK', as you say. I have equal say in the
ground rules here." She said it as soon as she could, so she
didn't lose her nerve. She hated confrontations, but she knew
what it would end up like if she didn't have it now--if last
year had taught her anything, it was that she needed to speak up
at the earliest possible time. "If your boyfriend lives down the
hall it is equally easy for you to go visit him as it is for him
to visit you. If you're both still here after 10 pm, I will be
coming back in, I have a key and I need to sleep. If it bothers
you, you can move." Her voice started to shake, but she
continued, knowing that she probably only had once chance to get
it all out. She felt her fingers count off what rule she was on,
but she didn't wave her hands around, and she couldn't meet the
       other girls' eye.
"As for rule number two, the same goes for you. Whomever is
playing their music first gets dibs but if the decibel hurts my
ears even without headphones I will probably report it to the
RA. Study room isn't always an option, sorry, your highness."
She put as much snark into her words as she could. "Rule three:
Not a problem, same goes for you. Rule four also applies in the
morning. I will not be happy if you wake me up chatting with
your dear old pals back home. Rule five: Oh please. I might have
been newly assigned to this room but I am not new to the school.
You're not the queen of England, and don't act like your the
president of the USA either, it's unbecoming."
She then walked out of the room, but stayed in the hall just
outside, her face starting to burn red from her nerves finally
catching up with her, and shame that she had risen to the tone
in the girl's voice so easily. Usually it took a lot to get her
temper up. The only time it usually caught her by surprise was
when she was at home, or under loads of stress. She cradled her
face in her hands for a few moments, and then sighed.
So much for being friends, she thought. No wonder my sister
hates me, if that's what I act like around her... She made a new
resolution to try to act like less of a bitch at home.
At that thought, she checked her phone, wondering how many times
her sister had texted her while she'd been unpacking. For all
their fights, she was actually kind of attached to her sister.
She just didn't share the girl's point of view about life,
that's all. They were opposites in that way, really.

       Sydora Reynalds
Sydora rattled off the ground rules pointedly. Her heart was
hammering in her chest, blood rushing in her ears as he hands
begin to quake, though her voice never wavers.
"No, it's not 'OK', as you say. I have equal say in the ground
rules here. If your boyfriend lives down the hall it is equally
easy for you to go visit him as it is for him to visit you. If

Rule three: Not a problem, same goes for you. Rule four also
applies in the morning. I will not be happy if you wake me up

not new to the school. You're not the queen of England, and
don't act like your the president of the USA either, it's
unbecoming." Zinnia fired back before exiting the room.
Sydora stood still for a moment, squeezing her eyes shut tightly
and exhaling deeply. There it was, she could practically hear
their potential friendship crack and shatter around her. She
pushed herself off of the wall and moved into the bathroom,
swallowing hard as the door slammed behind her. There was a long
moment that she spent staring hard at the girl in the mirror,
jaw clenched and eyes wet. Zinnia was easier to anger than she
had previously thought, though she couldn't help but think that
worked in her favor. Of course, it all only mattered if the
blonde held a grudge; if she didn't, they would be going round
and round until someone caved... and that wouldn't be Sydora.
All she wanted was to live in silence with this girl, silent
hatred if need be, but she didn't need her asking questions. She
didn't let people get close. Trent had slipped under the radar
further than she thought he would and Clarence... well, he
managed to worm his way into her life too, but that was it. She
couldn't help but feel like her and Zinnia would get along if
they didn't live together, but they did so it really didn't
       matter.
She took a deep breath and leaned back against the door, trying
to steady her breathing and shaking before she exited the
bathroom. The room was quiet and she didn't bother to look
around to see if Zinnia was back, she really just wanted to
sleep. She just wanted to sleep.
       Sydora is done here.

       Zinnia Natter
She stayed outside in the hall for a few more minutes, but after
hearing Sydora move back into the room and settle onto her bed,
she decided she would leave the dorm and go read her new book on
viruses. School was going to start up soon, anyway, and since
she was sure Sydora wouldn't talk to her anymore, at least for
the day, she figured she might as well enjoy the rest of her day
without having to worry about an uptight English girl getting on
       her ass.
She quietly went in, grabbed her book and a small notepad and
pencil, and then left, grabbing a second sweater just in case.
She'd spotted her favorite studying spot, and it hadn't been
'discovered' by any of the freshmen as far as she knew, so she
headed there. Hopefully the rest of her day wouldn't be so bad.
       Zinnia is done here
