The die is cast, and for the interviewer's benefit, the latest
book by Poniatowska – whom many have called the “red princess”
of Mexico – is The Polish Lover , in which she reconstructs part
of her family genealogy. So, while I look at the ubiquitous
statuette of the Virgin of Guadalupe that she has next to her –
because here you don't have to believe to be a Guadalupe – I
start with the simple thing: the family.
You were born in Paris, you have Mexican origins on the part of

family, Polish origins on the part of
your paternal family – something that you reconstruct when
talking about the Poniatowskis in your latest book The Polish
Lover – and a history marked by the participation of both your
father as his mother in the fight against Nazism in France. I
imagine all that must have shaped something of his character.
Yes, of course, it is a very extensive family story that I have
always been very interested in and that I usually tell.

Remember that among my ancestors is Stanislaw Poniatowski, who
was the last king of Poland. He was born in 1732 and had a very
liberal reign, also very interested in culture. He was also very
in love with Catherine the Great. His nephew, Józef Poniatowski,
was Napoleon's marshal and jumped into the Elster River rather
than surrender to the Russians. And my father, Jean Poniatowski,
born in France, was involved in the fight against Nazism. His
intention was to cross the Pyrenees on foot to reach Africa and
find De Gaulle and the Free French army there, but he was
captured in Jaca, a Spanish city very close to the border with
France.
