       January 25th, 1956 - Cape Canaveral - (INN)
Cape Canaveral, Florida -- In a stunning announcement this week
newly formed NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space
Administration) Director Jonathan DeShane announced that NASA's
R&D budget is too small for the tasks that President Eisenhower
       set for the agency.
After the announcement Senator Chad Snyder from Texas, Chairman
of the Senate Oversight Committee for the Development of Space,
immediately called for an investigation of NASA's proposed
expenditures and called for the resignation of the current
       Director.
In a statement from the White House President Eisenhower
expressed that Director DeShane still has his, and the
President's Council on the Sciences, full support and stated
there was no reason for the Director to resign.
In a biting retort the Director had this to say in response to
Senator Snyder's call for his resignation and investigation:
"When President Eisenhower formed NASA he gave us a mandate, to
take the United States into space. That is exactly what NASA
will attempt to do. However, when Congress finally funded our
agency they did not give us the resources to do it in a timely
fashion. So we will have to prioritize our R&D dollar wisely.
"Moreover, if the good Senator from the great state of Texas
wishes NASA to carry out the President's mandate, maybe he, and
his committee, can loosen the purse strings a little and fund
NASA with the means to do so. Thank you."

BBC Radio Transcript, 8th of November, 1955
       Interviewer:
"Good evening listeners and welcome to the BBC's weekly science
program. I'm Charles Francis and with me today is Percy
Thistlethwaite, Minister for Aviation Technology who is here
today to shed some light on some rather exciting rumours."
       [short pause]
"Minister Thistlethwaite, there has been some talk in the
scientific community about a major contract your ministry has
made on behalf of the government with several aircraft
manufacturing firms. The largest one being to Armstrong
Siddeley, there has been some speculation that this might
indicate a new bomber to join the V-force, is this true?
Percy Thistlethwaite, Minister for Aviation Technology:
"No Charles, I can most certainly say that this is a strictly
non-military project. In fact, I've even been given the go
ahead by the Prime Minister to tell you a little about it."
       Interviewer:
       [Quietly] "Oh really minister?"
       Thistlethwaite:
[Chuckles] "Yes, indeed. There's going to be a cabinet
shake-up at the end of the year, as I'm sure everyone is aware.
One of the reforms the PM is going to impliment is a pretty
major change in the focus of my own office. I shall be Minister
for Aviation Technology no longer! No, as of the 1st of January
I will take up the post of minister for Aerospace Technology.
I'm afraid I can't say much more asside from... well Charlie, we
       are going to space."
       Interviewer:
"Going to space minister? Very Jules Verne!"
       Thistlethwaite:
[Laughs] "Hah! Far better than that my dear Charles. Indeed,
the very first launch of a rocket that shall take a... a small
machine to tumble endlessly around and around the space above
our planet shall be launched. By the time the new year ends!"
