When the end came, it came in a way nobody on Earth had
expected, with a mysterious transmission from space.
"The dominant species residing in the star system located at the
galactic coordinates of 15-12-449-49-0/0/0-KS has, once again,
been judged unworthy to leave their Birthworld. Maybe this time
around your species will learn that cooperation, and not
competition, is what is critical to survival." What did they
mean by once again?
The message ended just as enigmatically as it had begun. Then the
bombardment began. Every satellite in orbit was destroyed. On
the ground every military base, bridge, tunnel, power plant,
water purification, pharmaceutical, and fuel production
facility, no matter how small or insignificant, was targeted and
destroyed with kinetic kill devices.
The urban areas were, maybe as a kind of mercy, spared.
Although, as the events unfolded most survivors came to see the
sparing of the urban areas as a punishment. Within a week they
had exhausted their food, water, and medical supplies. That was
when the point when man's civilization fell apart.
Without the infrastructure to support his civilization things
quickly fell apart. The urban dwellers began to riot and kill
each other over the remaining food, clean water, and medicine.
When those supplies were exhausted, like a biblical plague of
locusts, they descended on the countryside and stripped it of
everything they could get their hands on. No town, no matter how
small, was spared.
If it was thought they had supplies, the city dwellers took it.
Since they felt they deserved it more than the townsfolk did.
After all, it was the cities that defined a civilization, and
they deserved more than the 'ignorant hicks' did.
Once the countryside had been stripped of all it could provide,
only then did the city dwellers realize their mistake. By
stripping the countryside, and competing, not cooperating, with
their rural brethren, they had doomed themselves to death by
starvation and disease. Once death truly stalked the land,
slaying humanity by the billions, only then did the enigmatic
message begin to make sense, cooperation, not competition, is
the key to survival.
So, stranger, How Will You Survive?
