       Additional really old Canon

He took a deep breath and said what was in his heart. "We cannot
win by force of arms. Not anymore. Our analysis indicates at the
current rate of change, they will be showing effective tactics
across most of their units in less then two years. We know what
our loss rate is now. Imagine what it will be in another year.
But this brings up our last point."
"The mass bombardments of civilian populations stopped slightly
more then two years ago. About the time the Commonwealth
received a new fleet commander by the name of Aerobhin d'Suchen.
Intel says that he was originally a priest by training. A
priest. That may explain some of the changes, but not all. The
ceasing of the civilian bombardments could not have been ordered
by him alone, we think. It had to have been approved by someone
higher. At this point we move into pure speculation. Governance
of the interior of their empire is the responsibility of a
senate type structure. Dealing with the outside universe is
through a council that is elected for life. The man who was
assassinated was a member of this council, we think. Not just an
ambassador, but an individual of immense power within their
       empire."
"We know that his assassination was not taken well by them.
Their actions and commentary are on record, but they took us at
our word. So the feathers smoothed down and they gave us another
chance. And we blew it. We assigned an incompetent to guard
their graveship home. It was attacked and this man did not take
action until it was destroyed. I do not believe that they can
comprehend that this was the action of an idiot. To them it had
to be deliberate. Remember what I said earlier about their
       historical response to deliberate attacks?"
"We even have their message of intention. I do not think that
anyone here misunderstood what they said. We just did not
believe that they meant it. That was a mistake. Everyone that
has ever met them has commented that they are bad liers. Bad
liers.", he emphasized. "Almost every race we have ever met is
more then capable of, shall we say, creative diplomacy? But not
them. We keep trying to read ourselves into what they say, but
they are different somehow, in someway from most of the races
that we have met. We just don't know why yet."
"Somehow we have been classed as something that is dangerous
beyond belief and they will do what it takes to remove this
threat. So why? what motivating force is behind this? We would
say honor or religion. Close, but not quite. It does not involve
honor, but duty to self and something called Geanan. Means a
greater self or unity we think. Their language is sufficiently
complicated that often we find ourselves changing the definition
of a word only to later realize that its meaning changes on
       context."
He blinks for a moment, realizing he had gone off track again.
"They see our deaths as assisting the greater good. It is not
genocide to them. It is like cleansing your house of hungry
venomous snakes that will kill you in time, given the chance. It
is probably more and less complicated then that, but its the
best we have given our sources."
"Our biggest problem so far, besides the tech gap, is figuring
out why they do what they do. This will not change until we get
one of them alive long enough to ask questions. We all know the
luck we have had on that."
"Our last point that has been missed, and I consider it to be
the greatest one to date is thus. The Commonwealth is no longer
committing mass genocide on our civilians. No more cities have
been bombed from orbit for the past two years. This is in
contradiction to their stated goals of five years ago. And it
started about the time this Aerobhin was put in charge of the
war against us. Give or take a few months. We believe that he
implements the war aims of his own superiors. And they have
changed the orders that were originally given. Why is that
important? Remember how inflexible they have been until
recently? Making changes only after horrific losses force them
       too? "
"Ladies and Gentlemen, they were most definitely winning at the
point that this genocide policy changed. So, what happened to
cause the change? What do they know or suspect that we do not?
Whatever happened was of such significance that it altered how
they were fighting this war. It caused them to change." He
emphasized the last word by drawing it out slightly. "The change
has actually dragged the war out I think. It has bought us
precious time. We need to know what that was. It may will be our
       last hope."
