Alex's eyes flew open, full of fear. Searching all around her,
looking for whatever it was tshe was afraid of, but there was
nothing. She was sitting on a bench outside of a house.
“Alex! What are you doing out here all alone, silly girl!
Everyone is inside waiting for you!”
Startled, she looked towards the origin of the voice. It was
her mother. “Oh, yeah, sorry mom! I was just enjoying the
sunlight, it’s such a pretty day,” she said apologetically.
Her mom laughed, “Well don't you sound all grown up! I can't
believe you are turning eleven today!”
Alex stood up and immediately sat back down again as pain shot
through her leg. The pain seemed to originate from her left
thigh. What the heck? She moved her leg around, but the pain
seemed to disappear. Well that was odd. Standing again, she
walked towards the house. She walked up to the glass door and,
before sliding it open, she saw in the reflection an oak tree
that, for some reason, made her shudder as the pain in her leg
       re-ignited...
“Hey! What is wrong with you, you idiot child! We have been
waiting in here while you dilly dally and play around. Get in
the house NOW!” her dad yelled as he pulled the glass door open
and dragged her through it into the house...
“Happy Birthday Alex!” Everyone shouted excitedly. Soon the
party was in full swing and Alex was completely happy talking to
and being around all the people she knew and loved. She was lost
in the joy of the moment…
The mood of the room then shifted so suddenly it was almost
palpable. Everyone seemed to move in slow motion. Alex’s mom
fell to the floor, dropping the glass cup was carrying. Glass
and juice went everywhere, but Alex was focused on her mother.
Her mom was now just a heap on the floor, her arms cut and
       bloody from the glass…

Chris woke up next to a giant oak tree. "Where. . ." he couldn't
complete the thought. He saw a girl being 'dragged' inside a
house, by what seemed to be her father. He watched carefully. He
slowly looked around, and couldn't remember anything, but. . .
"Where is she?!?" Chris suddenly realized that she was gone. He
ran towards the house, almost slipping on the barely wet grass.
Chris caught himself and skipped the first step onto the porch
and opened the door silently, his sword coming out of his sheath
with a dull hiss. Then everything changed. Time seemed to stand
still as he took his first step inside the house, and he heard
       the sound of glass shattering.
Chris slowly made his way past the kitchen, time seeming to
stand still for some reason. He jumped and skipped the first 4
steps of the wooden stairs in front of him. Then he leaped his
way up 3 more. Chris frantically made his way up the rest of the
way, before turning right. Chris saw the painted, black door in
front of him, and rammed it with his shoulder. Upon entrance he
found an empty field, and turned to see no door behind him.
"Why did I. . ." Chris mumbled to himself, having no
recollection of his motivation to go through the door. Then he
forgot about the door, and started walking in the empty field of
yellowing grass. Something was different, but he could no longer
put his finger on the change. All the same, he walked forward:
       Step by step.
