Other Books

Anyone read any interesting books by an author other than George
R. R. Martin?
Wheel of Time is a decent fantasy series though it is a bit
long.

I've read the Inheritance series, The Children of the Red King
series, and the Harry Potter series. Other than that I've read
quite a few Stephen King and Dean Koontz books. If you've never
heard of Odd Thomas you should check out that series by Dean
Koontz, it's excellent.

I read both of the first two mentioned, the first and last of
the third, and I shall find Odd Thomas eventually. Ever read
Mistborn(3 books), Stormlight Archives(2 of 10), or Elantris
(which may eventually have a sequel)? They are are all by
Brandon Sanderson, who also wrote the last few books of the
Wheel of Time.

One of these days I plan on checking out The Wheel of Time. I
have not yet read the others you mentioned, but I will keep them
in mind.

1. Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy. The books were a bit
bewildering in places as he certainly didn't waste time with
background in-filling but they move at a brisk pace and get
steadily better all the way through.
2. Garth Nix Abhorsen Trilogy: These have a fair bit of
Australian Aboriginal influence in them which makes a pleasant
change to conventional 'Western' fantasy. Technically for teen /
young adult market but they are perfectly suited for adults,
too.
Older series:
Bob Shaw's The Ragged Astronauts trilogy: Written in the 1970s /
1980's but don't seem too dated.
Frank Herbert's Dune sexology: Still a fascinating read which
manages to feel modern 45 years after publication
Leo Frankowski's Conrad Schwartz series: highly entertaining if
you can ignore the appauling sexism and misogyny.

I had read Seventh Tower, and Keys to the Kingdom, but I had not
heard of the Old Kingdom before. I will eventually look at those
others.
Try Heralds of Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey or maybe Dragonlance
which is by various authors.
Or Brent Weeks's Lightbringer series.

Spooky,
I actually got e-books of Brent Week's Lightbringer a couple of
weeks ago but haven't started them yet as I am currently reading
the Keys to the Kingdom series! Great minds think alike...
I forgot to mention Garth Nix's Ragwitch is a pretty creepy
story, but good anyway.

There's going to be a class on fantasy books next term at my
university, pretty much intend to take it, as it is a genre that
fascinates me, but where I'm not always sure what to read
exactly. (GRRM and Tolkien are of course also covered *gg*)
Besides that, I've lost count on what I've read so far - most of
it for pleasure, some for school/university. That's why I have a
goodreads account, though the list of the books I still want to
read grows ever longer. I wonder when I ever get the time to
read them all. ;)
Currently on a break from reading Ian Rankin's Rebus series
(about 20 novels in total, love them, but they are sometimes
pretty intense, still trying to finish Orhan Pamuk's "My Name is
Red" and have Austen keeping me awake on my way to work on an
early Saturday morning. ;)

Try Terry Brooks, Terry Goodkind, and Terry Pratchett with
Shannara and Landover, Wizard's First Rule, and Discworld,
respectively. All three are very good series by exceptional
writers.

Ah yes, I've read some of Pratchett's books from the Discworld.
Never laughed so hard while reading. ::) Will definitely try to
find the others at a local book store...
